Yes, playoff hockey versus (no pun intended):

billiards
hot dog eating
poker
dominoes
womens softball

I've seen all of these aired on ESPN over the years.  Yeah, they have a leg to stand on....

Jim Frenette -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/14/2009 10:55:36 AM)

I just heard that Versus will join tonights game in progress. What is the deal on that?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/14/2009 10:58:48 AM)

That's the 2nd game only.  They mentioned that lastnight and I found it strange too.   The way they are covering all of them has been a bit bizarre to me.  I also hate when they show in game highlights of the game that are tape delaying right after the one they are showing.  It kind of defeats the purpose IMO.

How about women's college basketball? Then No college hockey, even a weekly highlight show dedicated to what is going on, should be the minimum effort for the self appointed sports king.

No regarding the Versus Critique:

I think you guys are kind of defeating my hate ESPmoNopoly thread.[&:]

Espnewengland has no trouble with NHL,(they say,we know different) just the fact that they think if the NHL wants to be legit they should have stayed with ESPN(evidently for whatever E$PukesN wanted to pay). I do agree that Versus, in their effort to cover everything regarding NHL hockey, make some tactical errors. But I really like their hockey people and game production.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/14/2009 7:36:33 PM)

I love Versus coverage.
Great stuff today guys.
Agree on all.
Great game in Detroit, their crowd is fantastic.
Very knowledgable and smart at knowing when to provide atmosphere.
THIS is a real Game 7.
2-1 now. Typical, Selanne flops on the ice like a carp, but miraculously is now flying like a mad man.
I always tell my kids, if I have to come out on the ice and get you, we better be going to the hospital.
This is gonna be wild right to the end.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/14/2009 7:38:51 PM)

Detroit is getting goals from guys who have played more playoff games than regular season ones.
They are loaded with talent. Deep deep deep.
3-1 now.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/15/2009 12:17:39 AM)

2 great Game 7s
The Canes surprised me and finished off the Bruins.
Some tough vets on that club. Staal is a stud. Jokinen was a helluva pickup.
I cannot believe Brindamour is still plugging. Dude was old when I was young.
Ducks and Wings was a classic series, both teams gave all. Lot to be said for having been thru it before.
Ducks were a tough team to kill off. The Neidermeyers are such classic players, they give all and are so damn hard to beat.
Anaheim exposed some weaknesses in that mighty Red Wings club, hopefully the Hawks were watching.
I remember Jeff saying it, anytime you want to beat Detroit, you need to focus on getting to their goalie.
We'll see what happens,. but if I'm Chicago, the minute I get across the red, I'm throwing it on net.

So we have
Black Hawks and Red Wings
and
Penguins and Hurricanes
Dandy match-ups.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/15/2009 9:55:44 AM)

I was really hoping that the Bruins got past the Canes.  I don't see the Cane's taking out the Pens but we'll see.

The Ducks put up more fight than I expected.  When the ref called that interference penalty on Getzlaf in the first I got a sense of relief.  No outside help for Anaheim no matter how much pissing and moaning went on.  They finally made them earn it...and they almost did. [:-]

Great stuff as always SMF.  I can't wait for the Hawks and Det.   What a series made in heaven.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/16/2009 8:02:24 PM)

I think both series will be good, but I'm afraid both will not end up how I'd like.

Detroit vs Chicago
Classic traditional match-up between a couple of the NHLs originals.
The Hawks resurgence has been great for hockey. I'm thinking they will hang tough, and win on home-ice, but Detroits experience and depth is really tough to overcome for anyone, much less an inexperienced squad like this one.
I hope I'm wrong, but I see Red Wings in 6 or 7.

Pittsburgh vs Carolina
Pretty good stories for both teams. Pitt looked dead in the water 2 months ago, and have been flying since. They seem stronger than they were last year, when they made it to the Finals. Crosby has really ratcheted up his game. Malkin is scary, because he has been very quiet. Look out for him, he has the potential to take over and carry them.
'Canes have had a great run, but I just don't see a dangerous enough team to stay with any of the remaining 3. They remind me a lot of the Wild during our run to the WC Finals a few years back. Their run ends here.
Once again, I hope I'm wrong, but I see the Penguins in 5 or 6 tops.

1) (1) Boston vs. (8) Montreal: Who wins?

I've got Boston in 5 or less.
Bruins are rolling and have been rolling all year.
Kessel a better pro than I ever dreamed he'd be.
Chara is a beast.
Montreal reminds me of the Wild, too light in the breezers, and very fragile mentally.

2) (2) Washington vs. (7) New York Rangers: Who wins?

Still think the Caps will win this one.
It will take seven tho.
Hoping Ovie puts them on his back and shows the nation what he's all about.
Rangers are a good story, but they tend to fall down and take a long time to get back up
Caps weakness may be goaltending, they have to win shoot-out type games, the 6-5 or 7-6 variety, and they can.
Rangers are gritty enough tho, and an upset here won't surprise me.

3) (3) New Jersey vs. (6) Carolina: Who wins?

I have a rule of never betting against the Devils.
Sticking to it.
Solid franchise who expects to win every game and expects to compete for the Cup every season.
The Pats of the NHL.
Carolina has been red-hot, but that won't make up for lack of a lot of things.
NJ is deep and tough and has a great goaltender, not just a good one.
This one should be over in 5 or 6.

4) (4) Pittsburgh vs. (5) Philadelphia: Who wins?

I don't really see this being the big grudge match all the experts do.
Pens in 5 or 6.
Since the coaching change and the return of Gonchar, the Pens have been almost unbeatable.
Crosby and Malkin are poster-children in this league, you always have to remember that.
Every call will go their way, and they know how to capitalize on that advantage.
Flyers only hope is to steal one in Pittsburgh and pound, pound, pound them.
But these aren't the broad-street bullies, they lack enough guys to win that way, either.

5) (1) San Jose vs. (8) Anaheim: Who wins?

THIS is the one I think will be the war.
Sharks in 7 (I hope).
Bad, bad matchup for SJ.
The worst they could have gotten.
Ducks are just cocky and talented and conceited enough to think they will win it all, not just this series.
Series hinges on Thornton, its time for that great player to stand up and make a statement in the playoffs.
Can't wait to see this one play out.

6) (2) Detroit vs. (7) Columbus: Who wins?

Would love to see the jackets make this a series, but I'll be shocked if they do.
This has sweep written all over it.
I'll take Detroit in 5 or less.  (Boo)
Too deep, too talented, too much everything that counts.
Goaltending could cost Detroit, but they'll just simply give up less shots.
The best player in the league at several positions, it's almost unfair.
Great coaches, and great tradition. Don't like them at all.
But respect the hell out of them.

7) (3) Vancouver vs. (6) St. Louis: Who wins?

I simply cannot stand the Canucks.
I would give anything for the Blues to win this thing.
I think they have a chance, but my head says Vancouver in 6 or 7.
The Blues play everyone, and that will help if the series goes awhile.
They are not afraid and Murray will have them prepared.
The Blues need to get and stay physical from start to finish.
They will hate Vancouver by the time this one is over. (We all know why)

8) (4) Chicago vs. (5) Calgary: Who wins?

This will be a fun one.
Chicago may be young and dumb enough to win this thing.
I'm taking the Flames in 6 or 7 tho.
Just too much experience and star power to overcome.
Iginla doesn't wilt in April and May.
BlackHawks are a great story, it is awesome to have real hockey back in Chicago. (for them)

5-3 for me.
Nailed some, dead-wrong on some.
Fun to look back.

Couple awesome Game 7s. Did not disappoint.
Both losers went out fighting.
This could be a fantastic second round, some intriguing match-ups.

Bruins vs Canes
Only rust can slow down the Bruins, they manhandled the East teams all year, this will be no different. If it takes Boston more than 5 or 6 games, I'll be surprised. The easiest series to call, imo. Canes are very Wild-like to me, solid but not dangerous enough to win a series like this. They'll fight hard but will go down in 5 or 6.

Pens vs Caps
Oh my, this could be a fun one. The worlds two best players, two exciting teams, two young improving tenders, two hungry franchises. I think the Caps have more of everything. Better offense overall, better defense and depth, home-ice, adds up to a 7 game win for Washington imo. Pens one advantage is their top line, that shouldn't be enough to top the Caps.

Wings vs Ducks
Wow, just wow. This could be a classic. I really do not like either club. For completely different reasons. This will be a classic "talent vs grit" series. If the Ducks are allowed to get away with their usual crap, look out, this will go the distance. I see the Wings jumping on them early and often in Detroit and winning it in 6 or 7. But the Ducks are the ultimate sore-losers and will go down killing, not just fighting. Nasty, nasty franchise there, and it works for them.

Hawks vs Canuckleheads
Another barn-burner. Could easily go the distance. Chicagos speed and youth vs Vancouvers size and nastiness and attitude. Really, really hard to go against any team with Luongo back-stopping it. hate to say it but I see Vancouver in 6 or 7. The game sin Chicago will be classics. Emotion and home-ice really take over now. And the young Hawks will be willed to a couple wins because of it. But it won't be enough.

Ouch.
1-3 in this rd.
Think I pick out why the eventual winners could win, but then didn't go with them.

I had heard Patty Roy had the Avs job, now I hear he doesn't?
Wassup with that?
All I know is, within a year of him getting that job, he'll make huge NHL news, maybe for a good thing, maybe for a bad thing.
Dude is a magnet for controversy.
I could see him messing with the NHL big-time.

Great start to the East finals.
High-tempo game.
'Canes continue to impress me.
They will not go quietly this series.
Fleury won Game One for the Pens.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/19/2009 10:21:24 PM)

Campbell is the PMB of the BlackHawks, (from the D end).....
Can make plays that astound you and make you yell .... "mot#$%fu$%#r!" !!!!!!
Can make plays that kill your team and make you yell ...."mot#$%fu$%#r!" !!!!!!
He has made some turrible, turrible plays so far in the conf finals.
Cost them the game tonight.
Chicago is giving the Mighty Wings all they can handle.

Brian Snyder/Reuters/Landov

You might remember Hurricanes right wing Scott Walker's decking Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinals. Total sucker punch. Outraged fans (myself included) pined for swift justice, telepathically urging B's enforcer Milan Lucic to escape an official's grasp and get to Walker. I think I even screamed, "Kill him! Kill him!"
Unable to break free, Looch settled on the I-will-have-my-revenge-someday hockey trifecta: swearing, fierce finger-pointing and sarcastic nodding. Walker exacerbated the situation by skating around with a defiant smile on his face. The moment ended. Ward wobbled off. And every Boston fan had the same thought: Scott Walker must pay.
Nothing happened in Game 6, and when the series returned to Boston for Game 7, I wanted the Bruins to marinate Walker, grill him and serve him to the fans with an apple stuck in his mouth. You know, like a pig at a feast. Instead, Walker shushed the crowd by scoring the series-winner in OT. Of all the guys! I haven't been so furious since Drago killed Apollo. I waited for someone to pummel him in the handshake line. No one did. He was offered every hand and even gave Ward an "I'm sorry" tap on the shoulder.
The Walker story had everything you want from playoff hockey: bad blood, vengeance and, ultimately, reconciliation. Like Vito Corleone tried to teach his sons, it's only business. Come playoff time, players grow ugly beards and throw themselves around with no regard. If an opponent crosses the line, they settle it with elbows, sticks or fists. Maybe a slash when the ref isn't looking. They might even take a run at someone after the outcome has been decided. Just remember, Sonny: It's business.
Every Bruins fan felt the same thing: "Scott Walker must pay."

I grew up a hockey lover in Boston, and the sport's nonstop feistiness pushed it over the top for me. But I cooled on the B's after college, when owner/miser Jeremy Jacobs kept pinching pennies at the expense of Cup hopes. Other reasons: too many soft Euros; too many instigator penalties, helmets and eye shields, not enough old school. When overexpansion mortally wounded franchise feuds -- after all, the more times NHL teams play each other, the more they despise each other -- the sport's feistiness was sucked away like pus from an aching knee.
Problem was, we missed the pus. The NHL didn't get it, though. Add the ghastly trap and overpriced tickets, and it's no wonder fans trickled away. After the ruinous lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season, hockey devolved into a niche sport, and that was that.
Or so I thought. Because, as it turns out, I really like hockey again. A boom of superskilled players helped, but not as much as the NHL's reembracing its chippy DNA. Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke admitted as much to me when we shared a panel at MIT's Sloan Sports Analytics Conference recently. All he wants from any game, he said, is for his fans to see a few goals, a donnybrook or two and, hopefully, a win.
I wanted to hug him.
Burke always knew casual fans would return only for wide-open hockey and physical play. (I can vouch for this; I've never been to a game in which the excitement level didn't quadruple as soon as things got testy.) A few savvy rules changes opened up the ice, unleashing riveting talents -- Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin, among others -- who resonate more than they would have 20 years ago, thanks to YouTube. As for the physicality, little has changed other than the league's deciding that maybe it's not so bad. Fighting majors are up 11% from last season. It's true.
Know what else helped? Our country swung back toward the traits that make hockey hum. In the 1990s, we made great strides in the areas of racial equality, gender discrimination, gay rights, animal abuse, domestic violence, recycling, safe sex, drunken driving, name it. Americans grew more sophisticated and socially engaged. But we became undeniably uptight in the process. Something as innocent as a hockey fight suddenly became a bad example for the children. And no handshake line could undo the "damage."
Mercifully, we have swung the other way in the new millennium. The UFC made fighting profitable and acceptable. The Internet made it seem okay to attack anyone with words and hide behind the cloak of anonymity. Anyone could steal content -- songs, jokes, highlights -- and post it online, and everything was fine. Female celebs used sexuality to advance careers; soon teens were grinding on shows like Gossip Girl and nobody cared. Reality TV had no rules at all -- you couldn't do anything they wouldn't show.
Call it a lawlessness of sorts. I'm not defending it, just pointing it out. It's been great for hockey -- and terrible for basketball. The NBA suddenly seems like one of those late-1960s dads freaking out because his son has returned from college with long hair. "Wait, you can't shove him after the whistle like that! This game might get competitive! Flagrant-2!" Robbed of the ability to police one another, today's NBA players have no idea how to act when an opponent angers them. It's like watching two young siblings play -- wrestling unsuccessfully because Mom keeps screaming hysterically, "Careful! Careful! Careful!"
Can you play a fluid sport like basketball at its highest level without bodies banging, penetrating players getting clobbered and the occasional testiness? Of course you can't. The NBA pretends you can, though, putting the playoffs in the hands of (mostly incompetent) refs who overreact to each shove and stare. It drives me crazy.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but the NBA could learn something from the NHL.

On the flip side you have hockey -- a sport in which players police the ice themselves and happily jump into the boards after scoring a goal. In hockey, it's okay to settle differences like men, and websites like hockeyfights.com thrive. It's always business, never personal. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the NBA could learn something from the NHL.
This was my favorite Bruins moment this season. Center Patrice Bergeron almost lost his career once to a concussion, and in April, Canadiens D Josh Gorges ran him from behind. That same bozo did it again in Game 2 of the first round of the playoffs. Bergeron had never fought in his career. Not once. This time he whirled, dropped his gloves and pounded the bozo like a veal chop. Bruins fans reacted like a crowd at one of Oprah's washer/dryer giveaways. Bergeron could have scored the game-winner and he wouldn't have gotten a bigger reaction.
We may as well have been watching the UFC. Is that a bad thing? You can't call hockey's resurgence a comeback, because it hasn't fundamentally changed. We changed. Twice. Hockey didn't fit 10 years ago; now it does. I love having the NHL back in my life, even if it means dealing with Jacobs the Skinflint again. The sport is breathtaking to watch. The players are more brilliant than ever; games look gorgeous in HD. And like old times, all scores are settled on the ice.
Well, except for the one with Walker. Maybe we didn't barbecue the jerk this time, but that's what is great about the NHL: We know we can get him next year. And we will. I'm counting on you, Looch.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/20/2009 10:43:43 AM)

That OT winner may have broken the young Hawks.  We'll see how they bounce back.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/23/2009 9:17:56 AM)

Any thoughts on the "hit" last night?
Wow.
Knocked his ass out.
I give maybe a two-minute elbow, didn't think it warranted 7 minutes and an ejection.
Its was just a brutal hit on a guy who didn't see it coming.
That doesn't mean you punish the disher.
Huge win for the Hawks. Crazy game, Up 3, totally down after being tied, change your goalie, win in OT.
Chicago won't win this series, but they are becoming a FORCE in this league.
Detroit is sick. They can play terribly, and still never be out of a game. World-class best at almost every postion.

Jim Frenette -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/23/2009 10:16:20 AM)

I saw the hit and it appeared he was out cold and they were still fighting over him. I guess in the heat of the battle, they stop thinking, just retaliating. I'm not sure if the hit deserved the penalty or not, but Detroit got away with it anyway.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/24/2009 2:03:07 PM)

Penguins are rollin'.
I'll be pulling for either West team to knock them off.
Excited about Wings/Hawks today, should be a classic.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/24/2009 3:55:21 PM)

Classic blow-out.
Pretty much knew there'd be hell to pay after Detroit slept-walked thru the last game.
When they decide to turn it all on, they are freaking scary.
Remind me of the Russians before 1980. [:D]

Just getting back on an Aniversery trip.  Why do women make us get married during playoff times???????????

Anyway,  that hit...perfectly clean IMO.  I hate that Havlet got knocked out.  It's very bad but it was a clean hit IMO.  If that was anyone on the Wild I would have said "damn that sucks but it happens".

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/24/2009 10:46:44 PM)

Quenville has a point though.  That was a complete BS call late in the second and it made it nearly impossible to come back from. 3-0 is a big difference in the heads of the young guys compaired to 2-0.  [X(][X(]  towards the refs.   A repeat of last year.  I wonder if Bettman is happy about that for young Sindy.  [&o]

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/27/2009 9:58:39 AM)

Pens move on to the finals.
Just like the league wanted.
I'll be hoping the West representative thrashes them again.
Pitts only hope is that the Hawks drag this series out to 7 and wear the Wings down.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/27/2009 10:11:27 AM)

As much as I despise Crosby his team is running on all cylinders.   Malkin has taken over at times, Crosby is probably the best play maker in the game and Guerin is very steadying influence.  If Fluery can stay hot they may give the Wings fits.  One thing is certain, they can score with the Wings.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: 2009 Playoffs ... First RD (5/28/2009 9:38:13 AM)

Rematch in the Finals.
Knew Detroit would be there, didn't think Pitt would be.
Should be a much closer fight this year.
Penguins are playing their best hockey.
Detroit is banged-up, but still has a load of talent.
They won't get away with playing Chelios big minutes like they had to late last night.
Chicago really battled hard. They have a great future there. Maybe we can get that rivalry going again.
