You'd be proud of me guys. Tonight I watched BOTH OT's. Of a hockey game. Yep.

Big win. Rinne was huge. Cannot believe a couple of the saves he made. Stole one tonight for sure. Going to try to make it to both games in Nashville this week.

A couple of general hockey questions I've been meaning to ask you guys, too, as a novice.

1) I wonder this in soccer too; what the hell is the point of offsides anyway? Why can't teams just be free to line up their guys wherever/whenever they want? Force teams to adjust.
2) I've wondered this for some time too; do any teams do any advanced vision studies on goalies? A brief article I saw on a goalie intrigued me; name escapes me. Basically he had a brand new mask designed that helped his vision a lot; the main point I believe was that it was more squares than circles; something about our eyes blocking out squares faster than circles to increase peripheral vision. And it's apparently been very effective for him all year. Well, I wonder not only along those lines, but also in-depth studies for certain kinds of shots effecting goalie vision more than others, etc. Thoughts?

Welcome any insight on either of those. And feel free to call me an idiot on this if appropriate. I won't be offended.

OMG that was fun.
Nothing better than a building full of Canuck fans being totally shut up.
Thats one hell of a hockey team to hold to one goal in almost 5 full periods of hockey.
Trotz is one of the starngest looking dudes on the planet, but the man can coach.
Rinne as advertised.

Because it completely stops the general flow of breakouts and rushes.  If you just camped a dude in front of the goalie while your team was in it's own zone, that would take a ton of skill out of the game.  You could stick Pat Williams there all game, what fun would that be?

There always studies going on about all pieces of keeper equipment.  Little tweaks here and there.  I'm sure this has come up but I don't anything specific.

I've stood about 5 feet from him before at various Preds functions; indeed he is.

Thanks Jeff. Apparently I have not fully understood the offsides rules all this time. Will have to do some reading up on it.

I was letting Jeff handle the offsides topic.
Its so ingrained in those of us in the game, skilz ... that it kinda throws you off when someone asks.
It'd be like someone asking you ... So, why don't they take dribbling out of basketball?  [:D]
In other words, it would be a very strange game (one with no offsides)
The "free attack" would certainly make it more open, but it's weird to even think about how teams would handle it.
Like I sadi, its simply so ingrained now to know the puck is always in  the zone first.
(Kids have too much to think about already ... they don't play "touch-up" until HS level .... thats another whole argument by itself.) [:D]

Offsides in Hockey and Soccer are similar but a bit different. No we're finally talking my sports [8|]


OS in hockey is when the on rushing team (transitioning from their D zone in to their oppenants D zone) is getting ready to cross the blueline. No attacking player can cross the blue line before the puck. That's not to say a part of them can't tho. That's why you routinely see guys dragging a back foot. They just have to make sure part of them is in front of the blue line before the puck gets across.

SMF alluded to a fairly new rule, the touch up. A team can be offside as long as they don't play the puck. If every guy gets back across (and they all have to be back) they are then not considered OS anymore. This is why you'll see guys dump the puck deep alot even though they know certain guys are OS. The only caveat is that the dump in can't be on net. That's technically considered "playing the puck".

Soccer - same concept really but the "blue line" isn't a concete line. It moves all the time depending on how the defense wants to play. If any attacking player goes past the last defender before the ball, OS.

A very great defending technique is the D will hold thier line until the last second. Then, as the ball starts to get played behind them, they collectively move up. The attacker is usually in motion by that time and gets caught in the offsides "trap".

The very best strikers in the world are the ones who use that to their advantage by making semi-diagnol runs. They are in motion but they avoid the trap by not running parrellel with the ball.


Hopefully that makes sense because I'm a terrible writer.

Man, my picks aren't doing so well, but my personal preferences sure are.

Love the Ning and Shark leads. Finish them! (neither will be easy, bet both series still go at least 6)
Tampa is learning HOW to win in tough places. Been loaded with talent for awhile, and adding Stevie Y to the front office put them over the top.
Added some swagger. Vinnie LeCaviar is finally fullfilling all that promise.

Frightening as hell to see the Bruin D-man almost paralyze HIMSELF for life .... yeah, you need to play hard ... but you also need to stay in control.

Tough loss for Preds.
My euphoria over the 'Ning win was wiped out with the Nucks win.
Another OT thriller tho, great game.
Joel Ward keeps impressing. Lots of good things about Nashville. (even tho half the people in the building don't know why they are there)
Rinne is as advertised. Unreal. Was going to take a tipped shot or a crap play to beat him.
Kesler cheated and got the penalty call, didn't like it, but it is their game.
Love the Preds effort tho. Guys like Fisher simply skate their bags off.
