Stacey King -> NHL (7/1/2008 12:23:29 PM)

The Oilers have traded hard-hitting left winger Raffi Torres to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for 21-year-old centre Gilbert Brule, and sent defenceman Joni Pitkanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for winger Erik Cole.

----------------
Couple of big trades for differing reasons. Brule went 6th overall the year the Wild took Pouliot 4th.  Getting just banger Torres for Brule is not much of a return.  Have to hand it to the Jackets for this though...they are admitting a mistake and moving on.  With the new NHL financial landscape,  kids have to do  it in a hurry for their original drafting team for the team to get any good sal cap worthy playing time from them.  Which brings us to Pouliot.....he will be a RFA after next season if you can believe it.

Pitkanen is on his 3rd team now. Awesome talent for a D-man on the offensive side of the puck but a horrid 1 on 1 defenseman, and that is not a good thing. Wanted him for the Wild last offseason but I think Jacques would have chewed him up and spit him out for his D shortcomings.  Cole is a very good power forward who can also beat d-men 1 on 1 easily when given the chance, but the neck injury history scares the heck out of me. He is highly skilled and will be a top forward for the US come Olympic time. At 4M he is a bargain for this coming season but will be a UFA in 2009/10.

Stacey King -> RE: NHL (7/1/2008 5:06:13 PM)

Brian Campbell to the Blackhawks, 8 years at $7.1 million a season.  Pretty steep.

All I know is he is a very talented offensive defenseman.....fun to watch.

If  Chicago ever gets their goalie situation squared away &  could get 75 games a year out of  Havlat  they have a nice young team, could be contenders year after year.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: NHL (7/1/2008 7:35:08 PM)

Chi is going to be the new Pens and soon.  They got a hell of a keeer too in Huet.

Five years, $22.5M

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Hainsey has terrific upside because of his size (6-foot-3, 209 pounds) and his puck-handling ability. He may not have matured defensively (he was a combined minus-26 the past two seasons in Columbus), but he's only 27; he has plenty of time to round out his game. Hainsey will be expected to log big minutes and help out a power play that was 23rd in the league in 2007-08. Read more

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: Only time will tell what kind of impact the loss of Sean Avery will have on the Rangers, but it stands to be significant. When Avery was in the lineup for the Rangers, they were a much more difficult team to play against. He comes with all sorts of baggage, but Stars assistant GM Brett Hull has some history with Avery, thanks to their shared time in Detroit and should act as a nice buffer. The only question is whether Big D is ready for Big Sean. Read more

One year, $7.45M

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: The deal makes eminent sense for the defending Stanley Cup champs, who now boast a fearsome forward contingent that includes some of the best two-way hockey players in the world, Hossa, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg will be unrestricted at the end of the 2008-09 season and GM Ken Holland will have to open his wallet, so the one-year deal gives both Hossa and Holland room to move. Naslund's gone now, too.
Nice try DR.
You almost had us believing you were trying.
[&o]
Let me guess at the first pre-season Wild release ......

* expecting big things from a "rejuvenated" Derek Boogard  (who JL will still only play 2 min/period, tops)
* expecting big things from Pouliot/Shepard/Gillies
* counting on the best 1-2 goalie tandem in the league.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
We won the division last year, imo, because Fedoruk created a safe atmosphere for our prima-donnas.
You HAD to keep a guy like that, be it him or Voros or Simon.
They are all gone. That window of opp we opened just slammed shut.
We have soem good players. We don't have enough to be taken seriously.

Dude, just because DR persued these guys doesn't mean they automatically are going to sign here. There were a boat load of teams going after all of these guys from Hossa to Naslund. Hossa's agent confirmed that the Wild made him a huge 7 year offer, but Hossa had his heart set on the Wings. He left a ton of money on the table by not taking our offer. Naslund is old and his numbers are streadily declining. He was -19 last year and is -23 over the last 3 years. The Rangers gave him $4 million a year.  What would you have DR do? Give him $5million a year? Give him more years?

I'm disappointed we didn't get Hossa either, but there is no doubt DR tried very hard to get an impact offensive player.

Jim, the previous owner spent up to the cap over the last couple of years. When all is said and done we will close to that number again this year. What else do want him to do?

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Free Agent Tracker (7/3/2008 8:20:29 PM)

Sweens -
It's more of a "direction" thing for me.
I appreciate guys like you who understand and educate many of us on cap limitations in these sports.
I fully appreciate the restrictions a guy like DR encounters.
In a way, we agree on many things, you and I, in your last post.
And that was somewhat what I was trying to say in my posts.
DR spouts to a drooling public that he's trying hard to go after some guys you and I know aren't coming.
I just wish he'd spare us the smokescreen.
Naslund would do nothing for us, I agree.
I posted in the other thread that now DR has shifted the focus to extending Gaborik.
I don't agree with that, either. Hossa was another attempt to pacify Gabby.
That's gotta stop.
I liked what Fedoruk brought and we let him walk.
I liked Voros's energy and passion and we let him walk.
I liked Rolstons class, presence, and 2-way play, and we let him walk.
I'm just a frustrated fan right now, as I see a less-appealing roster than we had last year in many ways.
There have been some additions, and hopefully they mesh.
But that depends on how they fit/feel/adapt to Jacques.
Another move I didn't agree with (his extension).
Almost all hockey players have warts. Very few have perfect games.
JL puts them under intense pressure and a microscope, and some don't handle it well.
We'll play another year like a defensive-minded, expansion-type, close-to-the-vest, team.
We'll be ok. I want to be more than that.

• Scott Burnside's instant analysis: If GM Doug Wilson is trying to patch the big hole left by Brian Campbell's departure with Rob Blake, well, that's leaving a lot of space around the edges. No disrespect to Blake, but signing a one-year deal doesn't make the Sharks any faster or younger. If Blake was simply the finishing touch to the Sharks' offseason plan, then this wouldn't be as big a question mark.

GM Glen Sather has bestowed a deal on a man who managed all of 25 goals last season and is a shadow of the player who posted 104 points in 2002-03. The Rangers hope there's something left, especially if Naslund ends up being the de facto new Jagr. If Naslund is Jagr's stand-in, that's definitely a move that's Off Broadway. Read more

Sweens -
It's more of a "direction" thing for me.

Nice post. I don't like JL continuing throwing players under the bus in public. No wonder players don't want to come here. Players that are here say the X houses the best fans and most players would love that atmosphere, but not at the expense of being with certain coaches.

I've always thought Nolan was the next great thing in coaching.
Don't understand all his troubles keeping a job.
Not sure what to think now.
He loses another opp, but the Isles sure seem like a f-ed up mess to me.
Garth Snow throws his weight around like he's Gordie Howe.

Which is weird because Garth Snow couldn't stop a Gordie Howe slapper...............TODAY!

Wild put SRV on waivers! I did not see that one coming.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Free Agent Tracker (7/17/2008 6:42:39 AM)

Needs to blame his agent. [:D]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Free Agent Tracker (7/17/2008 9:11:50 AM)

Excuse my language in this post.  It's not normally my style but here goes.......

I ****ing hate this team sometimes.  Not the players but the management.  As a fan I've put up with a lot of DR's bull(*&* and rhetoric in regards to this roster.  I've seen ---- so stinky it would make a billy goat puke make this roster and I've had it.  While other teams are making playoff pushes we bring in crap like Simon every year (that is, if we don't just sit on our asses).

I'm not a season ticket holder, but if I lived in state I would have tried my best over the past 5 years to be one.  In fact, I've had the Center Ice package ever year it's been availalbe, flow to 3 different cities, driven to Philly and attended every ------- game they've played locally.  Literelly, i've given well over a thousand bucks to that asshole DR, and this is how he repays me/us???  GET A &*^(&^^ CLUE YOU SON OF A BITCH.  I would send him this exact msg if I had his email.  Damn he pissed me off.  This isn't just frustration over his most recent head scratcher either.  I've been trying to be patient and positive but a turd is a turd, no matter how hard you polish it.

Edited to take out the vile language.  Sorry, in case there are younglins reading this, they don't need that [:o]

This is supposedly so he can find out his worth. If he clears waivers, he might see he isn't worth what he is asking for. A calculated risk on his part since DR did offer him a contract.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Free Agent Tracker (7/17/2008 11:40:21 AM)

It's a stupid and unneeded risk IMO.  SRV isn't a star but he's been a big part of this team and he's only 26, and not asking for much.
