Lindsay Whalen's Gophers land Kadiatou Sissoko, a transfer from Syracuse

Sissoko, a 6-foot-2 forward from Paris, was a five-star recruit entering Syracuse and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
By Kent Youngblood Star Tribune JUNE 10, 2019 — 1:57PM

The key, Lindsay Whalen said, was getting her here.

The Gophers women's basketball staff knew Kadiatou Sissoko was in the NCAA's transfer portal. A 6-2 forward with good skill who had been ranked as the 10th best recruit in the nation in the 2018 by ESPN when she committed to Syracuse, Sissoko had another decision to make.

"We called her," Whalen said. "We got her out here. And she liked what she saw."

After a two-day visit last seek, Sissoko, a native of Paris, France, decided to transfer to Minnesota and will be eligible after sitting out the 2019-20 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Since ESPN began ranking recruiting classes in 2007, the highest-ranked recruit to come to Minnesota was Rachel Banham, who was No. 19 in 2011.

"It was a good week," said Whalen, who ended the week with her No. 13 jersey being retired by the Minnesota Lynx. "We have a lot of success when we get kids here for a visit. They see the athletes village, the potential they could be a part of. It's an exciting time. They're hearing our vision. We're trying to build something special, and they see the tools we have to help them."

Sissoko was sold. The five-star recruit played in 22 games with Syracuse last season, missing some time after minor knee surgery. She averaged 3.2 points and 1.8 rebounds. She also has extensive experience playing for France in international competition. She helped France to a sixth-place finish in the 2018 FIBA U20 European championships and she was a member of the U18 French team in 2017. Gophers assistant Carly Thibault-DuDonis watched Sissoko play in international competition last year.

Whalen said she sees Sissoko being used much like the Gophers currently use Destiny Pitts, as a small forward in a smaller lineup. Sissoko has a good handle, is very quick off the dribble. "She has a nice bounce to her step when she cuts," Whalen said. "Her midrange is really good. She's going to be an exciting player for us."

Sissoko will enroll in the fall.

Landing a former five-star recruit should give Whalen's program more momentum going forward.

"The city of Minneapolis was a big draw," Whalen said of Sissoko. "She came to campus, liked what she heard."

Looks like a real nice pick up for Lindsey and her program. My only question is if Kendal Lindeman can leave the Gopher softball program after Thanksgiving and be playing for Florida by Easter, why does Sissokp have to sit out the 2019/2020 season?

Does basketball have the transfer portal like football and softball?

Yep, the article says the Gophers knew Sissoko was in the transfer portal.

Is Whalen the best female Gophers basketball player ever?

While Little Ritchie strikes out in every at bat in the recruiting wars, Lindsay just a commitment from a 5 star recruit, Alexia Smith from Ohio. She's #46 ranked player in the nation.

I thought there were only 15 or so five stars.[:-]
Found that ranking on HoopGurlz and they go all the way to 53 with five star. Kind of takes the meaning out of 5 star when they have that many.

Some clipping I saw about her on ESPN. Note the athletic comment leads every clip.

Boo Williams Invitational-April 2019: Explosively athletic lead-guard penetrates and distributes in traffic; a physical guard with a chiseled frame attacks the defense, collapses the defense, finishes plays in traffic; rises on jumper in mid-range game, yields consistent results. (Olson)

Journey to the Tourney-November 2018: Athletic lead-guard with combo-game; physical off the dribble, quick-leaper, mid-range game creator with catch and shoot range at the arc. (Olson)

Nike Nationals-July 2018: Athletic combo-guard with college-ready frame penetrates, splits defenders and rises on jumper in mid-range game; aggressive defender, anticipates in passing lanes; sleeper back court prospect. (Olson)

Ohio Midwest Challenge-May 2017: Athletic combo-guard manufactures shots, mid-range game delivery in traffic; traps, pressures the ball, converts plays from turnovers. (Olson)

I see the 5 star and I see the 46th ranked player. I just have an issue with 46 being a 5 star. It's very watered down. In the men's game I always thought of the 5 stars as being the one and done players that can make a huge national impact their freshman season. That doesn't go 46 deep. It's kind of like calling everyone a superstar now that would be more correctly called a star. We may have 50 stars in the NBA, but 10-15 superstars at the most.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (9/24/2019 8:08:51 AM)

I really don't look at the star rankings....I remember that Jordan Murphy and Gabe K were barely 3 stars and started as Freshman.

Unless you have scouted the players yourself the * ranking is what you have to go on. Any top 100 recruit is a good get and top 50 even better.

No score with 8:49 left in the 1st quarter.

Gophers lead 5-4 with 4:52 left in the 1st.

They're playing this one at Williams Arena. How do they decide where to play?

Gophers lead 28-26 with 2:11 left in the first half.

Gophers pulling away now. 70-50 lead with 3:13 remaining in regulation.

Big win, big crowd. 77-61.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (11/14/2019 2:44:48 PM)

The Gophers women’s basketball team learned a couple things in its 77-61 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Williams Arena Thursday afternoon:

The Gophers found out they can win a game without leading scorer Destiny Pitts taking a shot for the first three-plus quarters. And they can win when they shoot barely better than 34% for a basketball game.

Down two points at halftime, the Gophers (2-1) outscored the Panthers (1-2) 46-28 in the second half.

Four Gophers scored in double figures. Forward/center Taiye Bello (18 points, 11 rebounds) had her second straight double-double. Freshman guard Jasmine Powell had 16 points, guard Jasmine Brunson had 11 and Godiva Hubbard had 10.

Pitts, who entered the game averaging 17 points, didn’t take a shot through three quarters and finished with three points.

The Panthers were led by Alyssa Fischer (12 points) and Bre Cera (10).

The key run came to start the third quarter. Down two after the Panthers scored the final six points of the second quarter, the Gophers opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take a 44-33 lead on Hubbard’s basket. Hubbard scored seven points in that run, which included seven turnovers and 0-for-2 shooting by the Panthers. Indeed, Wisconsin-Milwaukee turned the ball over 10 times in the third quarter, which were turned into 13 points by Minnesota.

Solid all-around team effort. I will never doubt a Whalen-led team.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (11/14/2019 2:56:06 PM)

The Gophers won despite terrible shooting (34%). They managed to get to the line a lot and hit 87% on their FT.

Bello had 6 blocks to go with her 18 pts, 11 reb.

Super freshman, Jasmine Powell, scored 16 pts and 4 assists.

Destiny Pitts only had 3 pts on 5 shots.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Womens) (11/18/2019 9:56:55 AM)

Things may have started to gel. The Gophers knocked off #19 Arizona State, in convincing fashion, yesterday. Pitts got back in the offensive flow and led the way with 22 pts, 5 rb, 7 ast. She is now over 1,000 points for her career. Brunson had 15, 5, 6 and Bello had her standard double digit rebound, multiple blocked shots game.
