Rau signs and entry -level deal with the Panthers, headed for their AHL affiliate.
Ambroz headed to the AHL's Springfield Falcons.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/31/2015 10:26:44 AM)

Travis Boyd headed to the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals)

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/1/2015 1:08:49 PM)

Brady Skjei moves on to the NHL, signs with the Rangers.
Not even mad, bro.
Good luck to ya.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/1/2015 2:58:15 PM)

The team is going to look SO different next year - will we even recognize it?

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/1/2015 5:26:33 PM)

I hope not Lynn. Next year I want to see a team full of kids that are all in and working towards a common goal. Not a bunch of me first kids already planning their escape to the big leagues.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/1/2015 5:31:25 PM)

So true
I'd really like to see them TRY to build a group once, that was hungry and excited, and never dreamed the Gophers would want them.
That'd be a wonderful breath of fresh air, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
We've had a player or two like that, but I'm talking an entire group.
Sigh.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/1/2015 7:56:01 PM)

Good points. Fresh start next year with a bunch of guys who are aching to win in a Gopher uniform.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/1/2015 7:59:38 PM)

Yep, would be fun Lynn and stfrank
And it would have to be the guys that come in a couple of years from now.
Next years recruits have already been stowed away in Juniors or the Development Program ...

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/2/2015 9:04:03 AM)

Adam Wilcox moves on. Signs with Tampa. See ya.

We needed another goalie for our all-Minnesota NHL team. He can fight it out with his cousin for the starting job. [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/2/2015 3:24:21 PM)

Some goalies "making it" surprise me.
Wilcox making it, won't.
Has the ability. If he hooks up with the right NHL guru, and listens, he'll be a solid NHLer one day.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/2/2015 3:27:12 PM)

Not many animals left on the boat at this point.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/2/2015 3:49:39 PM)

Mankatos Junior goalie Stephon Williams signs with the Islanders
Huge part of their success this year.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/17/2015 6:47:50 AM)

All right, Scott

Jaxon Nelson of Luverne as a FRESHMAN has committed to the U

Really?? This early??

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/17/2015 8:22:48 AM)

Minnesota reportedly is joining the ever-growing number of teams with a commit born in the year 2000.

Luverne freshman Jaxon Nelson has committed to the Gophers, according to his high school team.

Nelson is among the top group of 2000 born players in the country. He's already accomplished a lot in his young career.

At 6'1" and growing, his game already has a lot of tools for a high school freshman. Nelson led Luverne, a town in the southwest part of Minnesota, with 44 goals (he also had 47 assists in 28 games) a year after putting up 32 and helping lead the team's first-ever trip to the Class A state tournament as an eighth grader.

From SB Nation College Hockey's Chris Dilks this past August:

Jaxon Nelson, '00, Luverne HS-Nelson was the only Y2K birthdate here. He's huge and very strong for his age, so he held his own, though sometimes struggled with the pace of play. In the Bantam Elite League, it's pretty clear that Nelson and Minnetonka's K'Andre Miller will battle it out for best 2000 birthdate in the state. Comparing the two, Nelson has filled out physically a little bit more and is probably the better player right now, but Miller's soft hands allow him to play with a finesse dimension to his game as well, which might give him more upside for the future. Both are very talented for their age and should be fun to watch develop.

There's plenty of time before he comes to campus. Without accelerating, he is looking at a 2018 start date in college. Nelson will have to test himself in his development against much tougher competition between now and then - how he performs against top players outside SW MN is one of his biggest question marks - and continue to grow on and off the ice. He's good on his skates regardless of size, which he also isn't afraid to use against older players.

In a way, Nelson brings up memories of another early Gopher commit from the southern part of the state that was dominating as a freshman with his size and reach in Seth Ambroz. Nelson is a better skater than Ambroz, who went from a top-5 player in his age group to 5th round pick after three years in the USHL to having a serviceable college career. That's just one of the gambles on picking a player at a young age with players still developing and filling out at different rates.

Nelson's commitment comes a couple weeks before the WHL Bantam Draft in which he is eligible.

Once in a lifetime type of player.
Been very interesting.
No ones studied his game more than me, believe me. [:D] it's my job.
Really nothing will surprise me here.
Scary when the most physically-gifted kid in the entire southern part of our state can't even drive yet.
Once again , seeing how he progresses as everyone around him does, is the key.
I will say his development has helped open everyone's eyes around here. Never dreamed I'd look into our stands and see the top two college coaches in the country standing and watching one of our games.
And yeah, I get it, they weren't there for us. [&:] but it's been fun.
I've got twenty pages worth on this, but I think we've covered it before.
There are kids everywhere that can play, if given a chance.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/17/2015 8:53:36 AM)

Does he have any brothers? It would be nice to get a whole package. [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/17/2015 8:56:58 AM)

No. Came out of nowhere.
Not even from the usual situation down here, where one or two families have all the good players in town...
Their entire program has developed a couple really nice players lately, they've all fed off each other.
Good to see. If you're not me. [;)]

How far away do you live from them? Pretty interesting that they signed a 9th grader.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/17/2015 11:09:45 AM)

Watched him grow up. Have heard and seen the legend up close.
It's my job to devise a gameplan three or four times a season to slow him down.
Probably watched as much tape and seen him live as much as anyone.
Just like everyone else, I haven't done a great job of it so far.
He also plays on a summer line with my nephews kid and is coached on that team by my HC.
Big strong fast since sixth grade. Doesn't wow you with anything, but is solid in every area. Can play fast. Can play hard. Can play mean.
Doing it now against players who won't be college players like he will be.
Latest plan is that he will play his soph season down here, and then head to the development program.
But those type plans change daily.

2 years in Development, is that ever done?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/17/2015 1:59:15 PM)

They go to development for one and then are placed in the schools choice of USHL locations during their senior season.
The gophers like Omaha

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (6/27/2015 4:04:41 PM)

Lots of current and incoming Gophers drafted.
Elite program.
Needs to start performing like it.

bohumm -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/15/2015 11:20:58 AM)

Remember when Gopher hockey was all Minnesotans? Is that still the case/still viable?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/15/2015 11:27:37 AM)

Remember it fondly, but it'll never happen again.
And even the Minnesotans we see now, aren't home grown HSers.
Unfortunately, IMO.
