Notre Dame is joining Big 10 hockey.

7 teams would be a weird number. They will probably try to add another one, huh? Could the mighty dollar lure Miami-Ohio?

Does a team have to be a big 10 school to join the hockey conference? Such a shame that the WCHA was dismantled by Big 10 greed.

See? Jeff hates em already too!

SCSU had a series with them. ASU scored the first goal SCSU the next 13.

No.

It's like Johns Hopkins in lacrosse. They are a member of the Big 10 in lacrosse, but not in any other sport.

Bemidji State also swept them, I believe. They are not good yet.

I live in Arizona. It was fun. ASU actually won a few games this year.

Some fascinating numbers in here ...

Big Ten hockey is in the process of approving a new format for its conference tournament that would move games to on-campus sites beginning in 2018, a source close to the Big Ten confirmed to the Star Tribune.

The tournament would be played over the course of three weekends and feature three best-of-three quarterfinal round series, two single-game semifinals, and one championship game. All games will be hosted on campus of the highest seed.

the regular-season champion, in what will be a seven-team conference by the time new format is in place, will receive a first-round bye. Notre Dame will join the Big Ten as an affiliate hockey member in 2017.

The official announcement is expected in late summer/early fall and is pending several layers of approval.

The Big Ten began exploring other options for its conference tournament after three years of playing at neutral sites in front of small crowds. The tournament was hosted twice at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul and once at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The tournament will rotate back to Detroit in 2017 before the conference shifts to its new format.

Earlier this week, the WCHA men’s hockey league announced it would be the first college hockey conference to implement a new on-campus playoff format beginning next season.

The WCHA’s format will slightly differ from the Big Ten’s by including two best-of-three series. The “WCHA Playoffs” will feature four best-of-three quarterfinal round series, followed by two best-of-three semifinal round series, and a single game championship. All games will also be hosted by the highest seed.

The new format will end the WCHA’s 28-year tradition of hosting the conference tournament semifinals and championship game at a neutral site, most of which were in the Twin Cities.

The WCHA Final Five matured into the most-attended college hockey tournament in the country at Xcel Energy Center, but has struggled to fill seats after the sport’s 2014 major realignment. The birth of Big Ten hockey and the NCHC left the WCHA with a new look and without its traditional power programs Minnesota, North Dakota and others.

In 2013, the final year before the WCHA was broken up, the tournament drew 87,295 fans for an average attendance of 17,459 per game at Xcel Energy Center.

The Big Ten had the most-attended college hockey conference tournament in 2014 with 42,610 tickets sold for an average of 8,522 attending five sessions. However, those numbers were less than half of what the WCHA Final Five drew during its best years. Attendance at the Big Ten tournament fell to 16,144 in 2015 at Joe Louis Arena and dropped again in 2016 at Xcel to 15,866.

North Dakota beat the Gophers in the last WCHA on-campus tournament championship game played in Grand Forks, N.D., in 1987.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (5/20/2016 7:34:01 PM)

I'll never understand how the people at the U didn't realize this would blow up in their faces.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (6/21/2016 10:03:29 AM)

North Dakota on Monday unveiled the dates of its long-awaited return to Mariucci Arena. The Fighting Hawks will visit Minneapolis and reignite the regular-season rivalry with the Gophers on Nov. 4 and 5. Game times are still to be determined.

College hockey's major realignment in 2014 broke up the longtime WCHA rivals. The Gophers landed in the Big Ten and North Dakota in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

The programs would eventually meet in the Frozen Four that season. The Gophers scored the game-winning goal with .6 seconds left in the third period to advance to the national championship game.

The teams announced in October 2013 a two-year deal to renew the rivalry starting in the 2016-2017 season. The series will shift to Ralph Engelstad Arena in in 2017-2018.

North Dakota won the national championship last season while the Gophers missed the postseason for the first time in five seasons despite winning their fifth consecutive conference regular-season title.

The Gophers have yet to release their full 2016-2017 schedule. North Dakota will play four of Minnesota's Division 1 hockey programs in the first two months of the season.

The Sue win a National Title, and my insider at the Ralph says getting back to playing the Gophers is a bigger deal to a lot of them.

Teflon Don gets extended
He will make it to twenty and a gold watch
Kinda numb to it
Good for Don
Not much else we can do I guess
Kind of an icon

I just don't get it. At least his buy out is dirt cheap.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (7/28/2016 12:02:40 AM)

Great move to play The Sue in Las Vegas in a couple years ... stupid, to put it in a 8,000 seat arena.
Put it in the NHL rink
Have you not seen how Sue fans follow that team?
They could sell those 8,000 seat in a day.

Gotta remember we are in the B10 now. If they have their say the game time will be on a Thursday at 4PM ET so they can slot in after an Iowa vs MSU wrestling match on BTN. [:D]

Great point.
May even get tape-delayed .... can't bump that big Forensics Weekend Title Game being held at Penn State

From the Strib.

This could help the Gophers with some added firepower this season.

Top hockey recruit Rem Pitlick tells Gophers he's ready to join program

Highly touted recruit Rem Pitlick has told the Gophers coaching staff he intends on joining the program this season and enrolling in classes this fall, a source close to the team confirmed to the Star Tribune.

The decision comes as somewhat of a surprise after Pitlick announced in March he was “99 percent sure” he would return for another season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL.

The change of heart, though, is surely welcomed by the Gophers. Pitlick was the 2016 USHL Player of the Year after leading the league with 46 goals and 43 assists in 56 games. The forward's goal total ranks third on the all-time USHL list.

In June, Pitlick was drafted in the third round (No. 76 overall) by Nashville in the NHL draft and was later invited to the U.S. national junior team evaluation camp. He also took part in his first NHL developmental camp with the Predator's top prospects.

It is possible Pitlick’s growth during the offseason helped changed his mind. He told USHL.com he added 10 pounds of muscle this summer despite labeling himself a “late bloomer.”

He said “I think I’ve always been on a little bit longer of a development path. I’ve been a late bloomer kind of my whole life. I’m getting a little bit bigger and more on a level playing field with everyone else in terms of size and that sort of thing, and I think college, I have four years when I get there, versus if I went major junior or something like that, I only have two years left before playing pro hockey. I think college is a little bit longer, more time to develop, gives me a better chance to be more of an established pro if I get to that point.”

Also, last month Muskegon coach Todd Krygier took a job as an assistant at Western Michigan.

NHL central scouting’s Greg Rajanen described Pitlick as “a speed guy; shifty and elusive with the puck. He is a solid point producer and very hard to handle off the rush. He has a chance to play at the next level with his overall skill package and skating ability.”

Pitlick's father Lance is a former long-time NHL defenseman and Gophers standout that was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars. Pitlick’s cousin, Tyler, also plays professional hockey and spent time with the Edmonton Oilers, last season. Pitlick grew up in Plymouth and is a Shattuck-St. Mary’s product.

Good news
Kids a player
We will need him

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (9/8/2016 8:25:30 PM)

Spent some quality time with The Don today. What a great guy.
Talked like we were old pals.
He says he feels great, and he looks like it. Slim and trim.
Took his wife to Italy this summer, lots of wine, lots of it.
Misses Colorado. Excited for his son's opp with the Wild. He starts next week and is excited to fit in.
Talked a long time about being a basketball player early, until a bunch of hockey people forced the game on him in Grand Rapids.
Had a replay of my Will Clark moment, so busy enjoying the conversation, never asked for a thing signed or a pic.
Kind of beyond those days I guess. Very impressed that he laces up skates yet and gets on our ice with kids he will never see again.
Great spokesman for the game in our state.
