The Big Ten would tell us not to let the door hit us in the ass on the way out. And the Gophers would lose out on all the revenue generated by the Big Ten network.

Your stance is great if you're content with the hockey program never returning to elite status.

If your theory is correct, then you want to return the hockey program to elite status at the expense of all the other sports. I also don't believe being in the Big Ten and elite status are mutually exclusive options. Gopher hockey was declining before they were forced to move to the Big Ten.

Prove it.

First 6 years: 3 frozen four appearances and 2 national championships, 2 times in regions and once not making the tournament. Last 6 years in WCHA: 1 frozen 4 appearance and 2 regional appearances. Didn't qualify for the tournament 3 times.

The Big Ten sucks giant donkey dong, but they actually put more teams in the tourney than any other conference this year.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/26/2018 6:34:12 AM)

Interesting. For as much as we have all complained about Big Ten hockey, they have 3 of the Frozen Four teams. Looks like the BT got better and the Gophers didn't.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/26/2018 7:55:41 AM)

That's great. Their new motto should be "B10 hockey, the greatest league in college hockey that nobody has access to". But trust us, it's a good product.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/26/2018 8:09:16 AM)

I'm just saying, playing in the Big Ten is not an excuse for the Gopher program.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/26/2018 9:01:18 AM)

In a way, it's an all Big 10 Frozen Four. UMD is part of the University of Minnesota. If the Big 10 was to add an 8th team, they are the team that could be forced into it.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/27/2018 12:19:37 PM)

Motzko is leaving SCSU for the Gophers job.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/27/2018 12:29:25 PM)

Where did you hear that?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/27/2018 1:01:31 PM)

Personally, I find it disappointing. I don't doubt Motzko is a good coach, but I was hoping for somebody younger to take over.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/27/2018 1:07:47 PM)

Fresh off the presses at the Strib:

St. Cloud State coach Bob Motzko will replace Don Lucia as Gophers hockey coach, sources told the Star Tribune on Tuesday.

Motzko turned 57 on Tuesday, one week after Lucia announced he was stepping down “on my terms” alongside Gophers athletic director Mark Coyle.

Sources said a team meeting will take place today at Minnesota, as well as at St. Cloud, to inform players.

Motzko served as a Gophers assistant coach under Lucia from 2001-02 through 2004-05, helping Minnesota win NCAA championships in 2002 and ’03 and another Frozen Four appearance in ’05.

The Austin, Minn., native is a 1987 St. Cloud State graduate who was a two-year letter-winner (1985 and ’86) for the Huskies. Motzko began his coaching career as an assistant at St. Cloud State under Herb Brooks in 1986-87 before serving as coach and GM of the North Iowa Huskies of the USHL from 1987-91. He spent two years as associate head coach at Miami (Ohio) and one year as associate head coach at Denver before returning to Miami for three years. Before he became an assistant with the Gophers, he was the inaugural coach and general manager of the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL from 1998 to 2001.

Motzko had plenty of success at St. Cloud State. The Huskies ranked fourth nationally this season in scoring (3.60 goal per game) and 12th on the power play (22.41 percent). They were solid defensively, giving up 2.52 goals per game (16th nationally), but less so on the penalty kill (31st at 81.06 percent).

The Huskies won the NCHC regular-season title this season, finished runner-up to Denver in the Frozen Faceoff and entered the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. But Air Force upset St. Cloud State 4-1 on Friday in the West Regional semifinals in Sioux Falls, and the Huskies finished with a 25-9-6 record.

Motzko declined to comment on the Minnesota job last weekend in Sioux Falls. Earlier in the week last week, he offered praise to Lucia.

“First, the press conference, I thought, was outstanding,” Motzko said. “... He’s one of the true gentlemen in our game. ... His legacy is going to grow greatly as we go through time, as it should.”

Motzko guided the Huskies to eight NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Frozen Four in 2013. St. Cloud State has played in three other regional finals, losing to Wisconsin in 2010, the Gophers in 2014 and North Dakota in 2015. The past two times the Huskies made the NCAA tournament — in 2016 and this year — they were No. 1 regional seeds and lost to No. 4 seeds Ferris State and Air Force, respectively. That left his record in the national tournament at 5-8.

In 13 years at St. Cloud State, Motzko has a 276-192-49 record. His teams won regular-season titles in the WCHA in 2013 and the NCHC in 2014 and ’18. The Huskies also won the 2016 NCHC Frozen Faceoff.

On the international stage, Motzko has been successful, too, coaching the United States to the gold medal in the 2017 World Junior Championship and the bronze medal this year.

Actually Tenna-B broke the news, and he doesn't even care about being first.

Still not happy about replacing the 59 year old retiring coach with a 57 year old coach.

I agree. I would have rather had the growing pains with Potulny.

They have different lifetime goals. Motzko has no plans to hang 'em up when he's 60. He's a lifelong coach. He'll coach into his 70s if given the chance.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/28/2018 8:43:50 AM)

Look, don't get me wrong. I am sure Motzko is a good coach. In fact his record says he is pretty good. He may be willing to go into his 70's. The question is will recruits and players continue to respond to him that long? I lean more the direction of stfrank. A young energetic coach on the rise like Potulny would have been my preference. In any event it looks like the Gophers should at least have some short term success under Motzko.

Comparing apples and oranges is one of your favorite pastimes.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/28/2018 10:36:40 AM)

Matt, I don't think you have a real good grip on the whole concept of apples to oranges.

Lucia is an apple. He's 59, but wanted to be out of hockey by around age 60.

Motzko is an orange. He's 56, but wants to coach into his 70s.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/28/2018 11:57:21 AM)

No Matt. The fruit tree is the Gophers coaching vacancy. Lucia is irrelevant. Since Motzko and Potulny are both D1 men's hockey coaches, they are both apples. If I were comparing the qualities of a D1 men's hockey coach to a D1 women's basketball coach that would be apples and oranges.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/28/2018 12:00:38 PM)

And since I am comparing apples to apples, Potulny is a Honey Crisp. A new strain that is crisp and a great balance of tart and sweet. Motzko is a Red Delicious; old, mealy and flavorless.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/28/2018 1:07:35 PM)

I heard Lou Nanne talk about the coaching hire yesterday on the way home....said they had 4 very good candidates. Bet Potulny was one of the four.

Motzko has coached the last 2 National Junior Squads---so he has that going for him.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/29/2018 7:41:28 AM)

Good hire imo

Guy will DIE trying to turn this thing around.

Good man, one of the nicest I've ever met in hockey. (which is full of nice guys)

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (3/29/2018 7:45:35 AM)

Big Ten Hockey

Love what they've done with the place.
Love it.
