I get home in time for the game all we get is Bucky BB on B10 network! [X(]

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 5:53:00 PM)

Finally get to the game and we are up 1-0 with about 9 minutes left in the 1st.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 6:01:35 PM)

Now 2-0 after a PP goal with 4 minutes left in the 1st. Another good start for the Gophers.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 6:16:38 PM)

Was awesome. Announcer says "Gophers are firing on all cyndors. Wait until Watkins scoring comes back then look out!". A minute later [:D][8|]

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 6:19:33 PM)

Yeah, these B10 hockey announcers are usually pretty bad. Good thing I rarely listen to them, they are just background noise.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 6:35:14 PM)

Another PP another Gopher goal....
And then a 4th goal a minute later.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 6:53:36 PM)

They've been fun to watch. I missed the first period, but I'm impressed with the speed and aggressive play.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 6:58:33 PM)

Wowwwwww

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 7:02:28 PM)

Up 4-0 they are in cruise control now.
It seems Michigan starts out the period with some energy and a flurry, but LaFontaine has an answer for every chance. After the flurry we kind of take control of the game and they are chasing us.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 7:26:23 PM)

Love how this team plays.
The short touch outlets.
Beautiful.

Incredible goaltending.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 7:28:59 PM)

Lafontaine earning a shutout tonight. I hope he gets it.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 7:37:52 PM)

If Michigan’s big boy is a first rounder ...
we’ve got a dozen.

Yeah, I haven't been that impressed to be honest.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 7:40:15 PM)

I love it....best defense is playing in their end of the rink. [:D]

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/9/2020 7:44:13 PM)

Damn, an 8-0 start and now a break.
Too bad they can't just keep on going the way they are playing.

I see Jaxon Nelson scored on the power play.

Imagine he's a little tough to move when he plants around the net.

I see Jaxon Nelson scored on the power play.

Imagine he's a little tough to move when he plants around the net.

People are gonna be shocked by this kid
Nice to have a 300 point scorer in a 4th line role
He WILL NOT miss when he pops open in front with the puck.
He's a different cat than Gopher hockey fans are used to.
They'll be shocked at what he will get done, when we start playing really important games.
Part of it as you say, is his size, especially his length. He's country-boy strong around the net.
Could see flashes of it when he hammered that pp rebound home last night.
Interesting, because I've seen that kid score hundreds of goals, and thats the most-excited i have ever seen him.
You could hear him. If he gets comfy and comes out of his shell, look out.

Was it a case of "I'm the biggest kid so yeah I can score" when in SW MN Hockey...or was it just expected he could score when he wanted?

And how did you game-plan him?

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/10/2020 7:52:25 AM)

"I'm super proud of my team right now, I'm probably the luckiest goalie in the entire country," LaFontaine said. "We've got four lines…we can go all night long. We're building something special here."

He was the most interesting player to face, and to try and stop
Lulled you to sleep with his demeanor
Wasn't into the fancy side of the game, he was simply a machine who scored at any time
Wasn't a puck carrier, wasn't a creator, wasn't a booming shooter. He was a scorer.
Long, good hands, found every quiet space and every loose puck. Not a step ahead of everyone like Koster is, but never missed when his chances came.
In our part of the state, he was a manchild in 7th grade and unstoppable for most defenders.
We watched more film on him than anyone and for us it was always just PLEASE stay in-between him and the net, PLEASE.
We would, for periods of time, and then, when he saw we weren't, there he was, and there the puck was in the net.
Just a pure finisher of plays. Like a shark, didn't taunt you, just appeared and there goes your leg.
Then came back and took the other one. And then when it was 4-2 and you were coming back, he showed up and took both arms. 6-2 game over.
Same size as he is now when in 7th-8th-9th grade. He put up numbers that would have blown away every HS record, if he had stayed.
Wasn't a young phenom when you played him, from day one he had a seniors calm and presence. No rah-rah, no emotion, just an assassin's mentality.
I game planned one time for him that worked, and the next 6 times we saw him, he made us pay. Farm kid. Smart, strong and stubborn.
Probably his best asset, that stubbornness.
Could see him scoring huge OT winners, just because he will outlast you. Patient to a fault. Think you've stopped him. Nope. There he is. Bam, its in the net.

Could see the tears flowing the last couple minutes
That meant a lot to him, especially the shutout. There.
Some of the best saves I have seen in last nights game. Incredible quickness and recovery.
He was focused in and unbeatable.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/10/2020 8:39:38 AM)

"We're building something special here."

I think he is right on that one!
Four lines that can play anybody and great goaltending is a recipe for success.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/10/2020 8:41:28 AM)

Goddamn this is fun! We've been waiting a loooooooooong time for Gopher hockey to be fun again. There aren't many things like it when it happens.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/10/2020 10:14:12 AM)

2 plays that stood out for me and I realize I'm partial to one [:D]

Early in the game there was a great chance for Michigan. Lots of traffic in front and a dangerous shot from the left, top of the circle. Laf fought it off but laid a rebound that was dangerous. It was hacked at and fell out to the right of a wide open net. Easy tap in but instead a perfectly positioned Meyers just swept it away, out of danger and we broke out nicely. That's great coaching and awareness. It's so easy to get panicky and swept up in to the crap that's happening in front of the net.

Koster's goal. Holy crap what a shot. 9 out of 10 guys either miss the net completely or put it right in to the chest of the keeper. He had one spot in that whole net to score on and he hit with precision. That cat had no chance. Hell, Brodeur in his prime would have had no chance.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/10/2020 10:23:59 AM)

[:D][:D][:D]

Good stuff
Remember them both well
Sweeping rebounds for your goaltender can take him from good to elite
Meyers is so good, he's in the right place at the right time on every shift
Invaluable players

This bunch does things regular teams do not
Its like every rink rat came together and decided to team up
Sorensons getting harassed by two Wolverines, they come screaming into the Michigan zone down the wing, all three guys, they're hoping to drive him thru the boards .... he screeches to a halt, while they converge, he turns back into the play, this starts their confusion ... he spins his body to protect the puck, and wraps it forward, but off the boards as a bounce pass.
the two Michigan guys are following him like Washington Generals following a Globetrotter and you can almost hear them saying "we scared him off the puck" Uhhh, nope, theres a Gopher flying a step or two behind the play, reads it perfectly, picks up speed and the puck and drives it from the wall to the net for a great 1 on 0 chance. Meanwhile the two Wloverines and the Gopher are in a 3car pileup at the blueline, watching it unfold.
Hockey sense, reading the play, using each other. it takes the game from difficult to easy. Very smart kids on this team.
The outlet never changes we always say, its the same play ... thats true, but its done differently by different level of players
This group uses touch-touch-touch and we're out. No dangerous cross ice stuff that turns back on you. Everythings forward and with purpose.
