The boys left for Tampa yesterday.
God, it would be nice to win one again.
It'd give me hope again.
They were the last team of males in this state to win a title of any kind (worth having),..... may as well be them again.

bp would be disappointed. I think the Gophers won wrestling once, but don't hold me to that.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/4/2012 8:30:23 PM)

Oooo, you're right.
Sorry. [:o]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/4/2012 10:32:43 PM)

I like it.
I like it a lot.
Or (for Lynn) ... I like it alot.
[:D]

TAMPA, FLA. -- Erik Haula is jittery and cranky after a 10-day layoff. Haula, the Gophers' leading scorer, wants to play Boston College already -- rather than continue to read and hear about the high-flying Eagles.
He is about to finally get his wish.
The Gophers and Eagles will meet Thursday in the second semifinal of the Frozen Four. It is being called a matchup of hockey royalty; between them, the two programs have nine NCAA titles and 41 previous Frozen Four appearances. Ferris State and Union, in the other semifinal, are both making their first Frozen Four appearance.
"Everyone has the jitters right now," Haula said this week, before venting his frustration. "I am actually kind of sick of all this stuff going around here. I just want to get in the game and start playing. You know, all this hype that [the Eagles] are getting. There are four good teams in this tournament."
Perhaps, but BC is the clear favorite. Gophers coach Don Lucia agrees and makes this analogy: Boston College, he said, has the aura of Tigers Woods in his heyday. Given the choice of Tiger at his peak or the rest of the field in a tournament, Lucia said, most people would have still picked Woods.
The Eagles have won two of the past four NCAA titles. On top of that, BC is the No. 1 overall seed and is riding a 17-game winning streak -- the longest in Jerry York's storied coaching career at the Jesuit-run school in Chestnut Hill, Mass. To get here, the Eagles shut out defending national champion Minnesota Duluth.
"It's kind of nice to be in the underdog role for a change," said Lucia, whose team is also peaking but hasn't been to the Frozen Four since 2005. "Let's put the pressure on them. I like the way we are playing. ... And we know this is not the best-of-seven [series], it is the best of one. It is a one-game shot."
That thought offers comfort.
"In college hockey anyone can beat anyone any night," Gophers captain Taylor Matson said. "BC has a hot goaltender [and] their defensive corps is really strong as well, but we have dealt with top teams throughout the whole season."
Two balanced teams
Lucia said the Eagles are unique. "They are skilled and they are big," he said. "They have that combination which most teams don't. Three lines that can score. They have a 20-goal scorer on ever line. Who has that?"
Well, the Gophers come close. They have size in players such as forwards Nick Bjugstad, Zach Budish and defenseman Seth Helgeson and Mark Alt. They have speed with forwards Kyle Rau, Erik Haula and Nate Condon scattered among the top three lines. Bjugstad and Haula, the sophomore centers on the top two lines, are the Gophers' 20-goal scorers, and the reinvigorated third line -- with freshman Travis Boyd the past two games -- is coming off a three-goal performance in the region final.
"It is going to come down to the little things," Haula said.
Here are four keys to a Gophers victory:

• Win most of the puck battles. "That is more important than maybe the big hit," Lucia said. He said the Gophers have tapered like runners and swimmers do before a big meet and should be mentally and physically recharged.
• Take care of the puck. "We have to make sure we get pucks behind their 'D,'" Lucia said. "We cannot turn pucks over and allow them to transition because of their team speed." If the Eagles are in the Gophers' end, Lucia said, "we have to make sure to get in there and hit and pin and eliminate BC."
• Win the goalie duel. BC goalie Parker Milner has not given up a goal in more than seven periods of ice time. "We are hoping he is due to let one in," Lucia said. Gophers goalie Kent Patterson was the MVP of the West Regional; he can steal a game and usually plays his best when he is busy. Lack of shots should not be a concern for Patterson against BC.
• Score first -- or at least second. Boston College is 28-3-1 this season when scoring first. Lucia said if BC does score first, the Gophers need to get the second goal of the game.

Asked if he had a pregame pep talk planned, Lucia was blunt. "If you have to give the big time pep talk this time of the year," he said, "you are in sorry shape. The guys are pretty motivated."
As is Lucia.
"It is hard to get to a Frozen Four," he said. "It is hard to win a semifinal game. This is our chance. When you are a freshman or sophomore there is no guarantee you will get this opportunity again."

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/4/2012 10:36:29 PM)

They're finally talking about "it" ....

Mike Guentzel couldn't have predicted his return to the Gophers men's hockey program -- at least not so soon, and especially after the rough ending to his previous stint as assistant coach.
Getting spurned, after all, can alter opinions about one's employer.
But Guentzel didn't turn his back on a program he loves or let any emotional residue prevent him from helping clean up a mess that formed after he walked out the door. Ultimately, coming home just felt like the right thing to do.
"I had some of that energy back that had kind of went away previously," he said.
That sentiment holds true for the entire Gophers program, and it coincided with Guentzel's return. The long-time assistant -- who was gone for three years, during which the Gophers failed to reach the NCAA tournament -- helped foster the program's resurgence and return to the Frozen Four this season by overseeing the defense and serving as associate head coach under Don Lucia.
The Gophers set a school record with a 2.21 goals-against average, but Guentzel's impact on the program overall goes beyond statistics.
"I knew there was nobody I wanted to bring back in [more] than Mike," Lucia said. "He's what we needed. I wanted somebody that would be an easy transition, and it certainly was."
If the transition proved easy, the actual idea seemed awkward, at least from an outside perspective. Guentzel left the program in April 2008 after serving 14 seasons as an assistant under Doug Woog and Lucia.
At the time, the company line was that Guentzel resigned to pursue his dream of becoming a head coach. Reports later revealed that Lucia had fired him. Rumors persisted that issues between Lucia, Guentzel and then-assistant John Hill became the source of friction and necessitated change.
Reflecting on that situation, Guentzel indicated a number of factors contributed to his departure, both personal and professional.
"It just comes a time and place where maybe you should step away," he said. "I think both Don and I thought it was the best situation."
Was there animosity involved?
"Well, I'm not going to say that we saw eye to eye on everything," Guentzel said. "You get [set] in your own ways and your own means of doing things. Don has always been good about letting people do their jobs around here and contributing a lot. Sometimes you're adamant about how you think things should be done. He's the head coach and ultimately makes the final decisions.
"It was the
time. I could see some things starting to creep into our staff that weren't healthy. You should be a family, you should have good relationships, as we try to preach to our players. Obviously getting away, I think maybe his realization of what I could contribute and my realization of how it was good to work with Don and what the program meant to everybody involved. ... From that end, it was an easy decision to come back."
The program's condition deteriorated during his absence, and Lucia bore the brunt of criticism. Embattled and feeling pressure to revive the program, Lucia replaced Hill with an assistant who spent much of his adult life in the program and had a hand in two national championships, five Frozen Four appearances and 11 trips to the NCAA tournament.
"I'm not a backseat-type driver," Guentzel said. "I like to be front and center as far as ideas and thoughts. That's one thing that was apparent from Day One. Don was looking for ideas, looking for new ways, looking for improvement, looking for some freshness and new energy."
Both men deserve credit for not letting ego or pride get in the way of doing what's best for the program. Whatever happened in the past was buried as they focused on making the Gophers relevant again nationally.
"You understand the criticalness of where we're at," Guentzel said.
Guentzel knows better than most. A native of the Iron Range, he played four seasons for the Gophers, his final one as captain, an announcement that remains a source of pride.
"Probably one of the most memorable days of my life," he said. "I knew at that point what this program means."
Guentzel witnessed life outside that fishbowl the past few years as an assistant coach at Colorado College and Nebraska Omaha and coach/general manager of the USHL team in Des Moines. He enjoyed those experiences and appreciated the opportunities, which made his decision to return to his alma mater a difficult one.
The attachment never left him though, and his passion and enthusiasm for the job returned. He's also the clear second-in-command on the staff now. As for his future, Guentzel hasn't ruled out anything. He's already learned you never say never.
"I love what I'm doing," he said. "If I was an assistant at Minnesota for a long time, I'd be comfortable with that. That's not to say I wouldn't like to try another level whether it's head coaching or try my hand in pro hockey. This to me is one of the best jobs in all of college hockey, and I'm comfortable with that."

I love Haula's attitude. He basically said "f*** BC! Let's drop the puck already." Whatever happens, I don't think the Gophers are intimidated.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:34:27 PM)

Dagnabbit.
C'mon boys.
Tighten the screws.
BC carries themselves like they haven't lost in 12 years.

yeah ... crashing the net is BCs bread and butter ... mostly because they never get called for running the goalie
Guarantee we do it ... there will be something wrong with it

(yep, I'm bitter already)  [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:45:30 PM)

Some decent pressure finally

Lets goooooo, PP!

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:49:00 PM)

Yeah, he killed 30 seconds there, Thorne .... tool.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:50:13 PM)

Its like watching on the BC feed. Their bias is APPARENT as hell.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:51:54 PM)

Melrose ... "gee, Minnesota is nearly as bad as we thought they'd be"

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:53:07 PM)

Very good period for us.
I'm no longer worred they are better than us.
They're NOT.
They've got a goalie. Big whoop.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:54:35 PM)

Why isn't this BC goalie in the NHL?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:55:16 PM)

He'd probably have to take a pay cut ...

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:55:37 PM)

We're quicker to the puck.
I likey.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:56:05 PM)

Missed the BC goal. Just saw the tail-end of the replay (wasn't looking when the puck went in). Was that a legit goal? What was the BC guy doing in the net?

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:56:22 PM)

Almost tied it up there. We need to come out a little bit angry for the second period.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:58:34 PM)

Look up the page matt
When they do it ... its a great play (going hard to the net)
When others do it ... they wave it off.
(I'm bitter, I wish we went that hard ot the net, but honestly, I've seen a a lot of those goals called off)

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 7:59:35 PM)

Only thing i agreed with Melrose on ... all Matson had ot do was BEAR DOWN
He acted like he was in beer league
That chance comes once a game, kid.
BEAR DOWN.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 8:13:27 PM)

OK, we were lucky to get away with that one. Lucky it's not 2-0. Now we need a PP goal.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 8:15:41 PM)

C'mon.
Wimpy aroound the net.
BEAR DOWN

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 8:16:39 PM)

Your stars need to make plays.
Bjugstads not tonight.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 8:18:57 PM)

Like the traffic in front
Thast the way we will score on this guy.
Tips and deflections.

Nate -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 8:22:06 PM)

One of these shots will be over six inches off the ice, I just know it. We definitely can win this, just need to break the ice.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (4/5/2012 8:23:00 PM)

We'll win this thing.  According to Thorne we have the Egyptian Sun God playing.  That's gotta account for something.

Although, we need to pot one soon.  It's getting a little scary that we still can't score.
