From a Sid Hartman column...

The Gophers have started spring football practice, and coach Tim Brewster is predicting big competition for all but three positions on his team.

"............are the only three players who I believe are a cinch to be starters when we open the season," Brewster said.

This statement is notable because the Gophers have 10 starters on offense back from last year's team.

I took out the named players, but did take a guess before reading it.  I was 0 for 3!  Anyone else (who has not already read the article) want to take a stab at those 3 players?

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/3/2009 3:19:21 PM)

Decker, Weber, and Salamon?

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/3/2009 3:33:58 PM)

I see I was one for three.
Decker's NOT a shoo-in?
What am I missing there?

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (4/3/2009 3:44:34 PM)

Gray?

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/3/2009 3:50:21 PM)

Nope

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (4/3/2009 4:12:36 PM)

Blue?

(just kidding)

Exactly.  It must be the baseball thing.  Maybe Brew isn't crazy about that.  Still, he's a shoo-in IMO.

My other two guesses were Tsunami Lawrence and Big Play Traye (Simmons).

Some good stuff from Brew's Q&A just before spring ball started.  At least we know who he thinks are front runners for starting spots...and the  position changes.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/5/2009 6:21:54 PM)

Strib has some spring notes on there today.
D ahead of O by a long ways.
No Decker (baseball), Weber and Gray competing.
The standout QB from Wisconsin was there and signed afterwards.
Sounds like the D is bigger and faster, the O, (O-line especially) is disjointed right now.
Childress and Billick were there. ???

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (5/8/2009 6:12:33 PM)

Disgusting results from the yearly academic results.
The U has slipped to #10 in the Big Ten for male athletes.
We've had 3 football scholarships stripped from us for failing to keep up standards.
Disturbing results.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/9/2009 7:55:55 AM)

The Gophers' football program had a 915 APR; the national average was 948; the minimum required was 925. The bulk of the problems stem from:

-The sexual assault that resulted in them kicking 5 players out of the program.
-Players who transfered or got kicked out after Mason was booted.
-Poor performance of the players Brewster signed right after he took the job. Most players had already committed to other schools, leaving Brewster to take whatever he could get. Only 8 of those 19 players are still here.

Brewster's next recruits did much better and the riff-raff has either transfered or kicked off the team. The Gophers fall semester this year graded out at a 957, which is well above the average. If they finish out the year the same way, they will get their scholarships back right away.

Thanks Tim
My bad for picking the first release and not following thru.
Thanks for clearing it up.

Go down to the video section, Rand takes us on a tour of the finished product .....
OMG, this place is awesome looking.
I knew it would be great, but it looks like it is beyond expectations.
That locker room is ridiculous.
Maroon and Gold never took over the MetroDome, but those are tremendous colors when they are displayed on their own.
Not real keen on the bench seating, but the rest of it gives me goosebumps.

Didn't realize they were going to still use bench seating

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (8/7/2009 10:30:28 AM)

That is pretty awesome.  I kinda like the bench seating.  it's high schooly.  [:D]

I'm wondering if we've installed any protection in the restrooms against any future "Iowa Incidents".
Maybe they just went ahead and constructed some "special" stalls for them.
I hope not, the last thing we'd want is that type of fan .... multiplying on our watch. [&:]

Maybe that was the reason for no alcohol sales?[&o]

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (8/11/2009 12:14:06 AM)

Strib writer Kent Youngblood has some good info on his Gophers blog as they begin practice.

On a personal note regarding the o-line:
I figured it would get interesting after last season ended....but as things look so far, there are 4 guys with double digit career starts who are NOT listed with the first team (D. Alford, DJ Burris, N. Tavale, & R. Wynn).  Two of them have 20+ starts!  In fairness, it's hardly set in stone yet as Wynn is currently out with a back injury.   Also, four of the five projected starters are from the state of MN.

Go Gophers!

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (8/12/2009 12:07:55 PM)

Not rated in SI's top 20??

Unbelieveable!!
[:D]

GO GOPHS!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (8/12/2009 12:55:51 PM)

should be top 5, maybe top 3.  I could be a bit biased but..

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (8/23/2009 1:17:28 PM)

Pretty damn cool.
We do finally have a home to protect.
Lets hope the level of play lives up to the quality of the place.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (9/5/2009 11:07:56 AM)

Caught a break with Syracuse's bad snap on the first play of the game. But breaks seem to even out in the long haul - we'll take it!

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (9/5/2009 12:31:44 PM)

Who knew we were getting the Syracuse home announcers on ESPN2? They sure love their Paulus.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/5/2009 12:32:25 PM)

Our defense is atrocious.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/5/2009 12:33:48 PM)

I apologize to the word atrocious. I should've picked a MUCH stronger word.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (9/5/2009 12:38:56 PM)

Pretty bad defense. And our new Offensive Coordinator doesn't have much of an imagination.
