Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (4/27/2020 11:10:08 AM)

Yeah I just don't understand. Playmakers in 5th round....maybe he thinks the Miami kid is better?

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (4/27/2020 11:25:05 AM)

I kept on texting my brothers that Tyler was going to the Packers....thank god he didn't.

The Miami kid is a kick returner. A role that has greatly diminished in value.

I'm getting old … but wasn't Tyler Johnson going in the 5th round kind of shocking?
I'm not saying he was a 1st rounder, but I'll eat my hat if there were that many better playmakers than him in the first 4 rounds.
Just seemed odd to me. We never talked about it but I totally assumed 2nd or early 3rd.

Another case of teams favoring combine testing numbers over on field production.

My guess is he'll have a long and productive career as a #3 WR. Maybe even a #2.

He sucks at Kickoff Returns. Rocks at Punt Returns.

That's about right.

Spielman will regret passing on him at 155 and trading the pick for a future pick. Johnson would have been an incredible value at a position of need at that pick. Brady is going to love him.

Agreed. I think we could have really used an upgrade from wr 3-5.

Bisi is alright but isn't nearly the talent Tyler is. 5th rd was a coup

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (4/30/2020 8:29:19 AM)

I remember when it was amazing that MN got ONE 3 star recruit

another has now committed

Texas defensive tackle Albert Regis commits to the Gophers.
Defensive tackle Albert Regis committed to the Gophers on Wednesday, announcing his decision on his social media platforms.
The La Porte, Texas, native is 6-1, 295 pounds. He is a three-star recruit, per 247Sports.com, and plays for La Porte High School.

https://247sports.com/college/minnesota/Article/La-Porte-Texas-defensive-tackle-Albert-Regis-commits-to-Minnesota-Gopher-Football-Recruiting-146600687/

One of the top defensive lineman in Texas in 2021 La Porte (Texas) defensive tackle Albert Regis has committed to the Golden Gophers over reported offers from Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, Tennessee and Illinois among others.

The 6-foot-1, 300-pound defensive tackle took visits to TCU, Houston and Baylor during his recruitment. Regis has yet to visit Minnesota, but has an official visit planned to Dinkytown for post-COVID times.

Regis is currently rated the No. 26 defensive tackle in the country on 247Sports ranks, with a 3-star grading of 88, which places him as the #67 overall recruit in Texas. Minnesota views him as a interior defensive lineman.

Regis is also has a 11.3 100 meter dash time on record, plus benches for 405 lbs and squats over 550.

He's the 14th addition to-date for the Gophers class of 2021

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (4/30/2020 9:39:49 AM)

Aside from the NFL draft, Fleck's recruiting is the only thing we have had to follow in sports.

Provided there is a 2020 season, it will be interesting to follow. The Gophers graduated a lot of good players this year and there will be some holes to fill. At the same time, these guys were all Jerry Kill's recruits. Fleck has supposedly been recruiting and developing players who were more highly regarded, coming out of high school, than the players we just lost.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (4/30/2020 10:53:47 AM)

Get to know Albert Regis

Height: 6’1”
Weight: 300

Power 5 Scholarship Offers:
Baylor, Illinois, TCU, Tennessee, Texas Tech, and Virginia Tech

247 Sports Composite Rating: .8566

247 Sports Scouting Report:
Adequate size but limited frame relative to position projection. Owns a unique multi-positional background on both sides of the ball. Has played tight end and fullback on offense, plus interior D-line in four- and three-man fronts. Flashes impressive lateral quick-footedness that aids in terrific pursuit ability. Motor runs high. Range from sideline to sideline vs. the run. Runs very well for his size, to the point of being a RAC threat on offense. Also high-points and shows good ball skills at tight end. Leverage aids in promising close-quarters power, whether as a blocker or when attacking an O-lineman. Less-than-ideal frame limits physical ceiling. Occasionally gets overwhelmed by size/strength in the phone booth. Athletic context limited to one track time from sophomore year, albeit a good one (11.53 100). Plays seek-and-destroy defensive style and must hone technique, including get-off consistency and expanding move set. Very unique defensive line prospect with promising collection of tools. Projects to high-major level as potential multi-year starter once developed.

"Plays seek-and-destroy defensive style"

I love that.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (4/30/2020 11:18:58 AM)

That's one real improvement in the program imo (even thru the last 5-6 years)
We've learned to find athletes who like to punish.
We gave up yards, we bent a lot, but we have lately had a lot of guys willing to bring the heat when they get ahold of you.
That's a good start to building a solid team.
There's been a dozen LBs and DBs in that time who were just damn good football players. Tough guys. Can't have enough of those.
Barber types. Keep finding those.

Will be interesting to see where the final results end up.

Really have made huge strides with this lock down in place.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (4/30/2020 4:58:57 PM)

Because of his newness to defense, 247 noted Regis has potential to become a 4 star with a strong senior year.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Gopher Football (5/2/2020 6:54:34 AM)

So a lot of these kids are just hs jrs?

Do most stick with their commitment when they are this young?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/2/2020 9:16:11 PM)

The majority do. You usually lose a couple late, but snag one or two who had committed to somebody else.

Rand out on a reach article, hoping to get lots of response:

Bateman possible #1 overall draft choice in 2021?

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (5/4/2020 2:49:41 PM)

Team activities are now suspended in the conference to June 1st.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (5/4/2020 3:11:36 PM)

First the Twins
And now the Gophs

We start getting something right, and …
this is why we can never have nice things, Karen.

No Kidding

and the Vikings? They'll play

Of course...they don't fit that category.

I always thought Bateman was the equal of Tyler Johnson. I've seen him projected in the 2nd round. #1 overall sounds quite unlikely.

#1 overall or 1st round pick?

I can't see the former, but he's already getting picked in the 1st round in a number of way early mocks.

15. Browns – Rashod Bateman
WR, Minnesota
In an offense that featured Tyler Johnson heavily over the last two years, Rashod Bateman has looked even better, at times. He averaged more than 20 yards per catch in 2020, recorded over 1,200 receiving yards and put the rest of the country on notice.

https://thedraftnetwork.com/articles/nfl-draft-mock-2021-too-early

22. Green Bay Packers — *Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota
Averaging 20.3 yards per catch last season, Bateman was a cheat code with his dominance at the catch point. There are three Big Ten receivers in this mock, but it was Bateman who was named the conference’s top receiver last season.

Three-star DB Darius Green commits to the Gophers

Not enough internet recruiting services have had a chance to evaluate and rate Green, so he does not yet have a 247 Sports Composite Rating.

Get to know Darius Green
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 190

Power 5 Scholarship Offers:
Georgia Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Virginia, and Wake Forest

247 Sports Composite Rating: N/A

Scouting Report:
Green is a defensive back who has been asked to cover a lot of ground at the high school level, from lining up in the box to playing man coverage over the slot receiver. He has acquitted himself well in each role, showing the tackling and physicality needed to be effective in run support and the ability to diagnose plays quickly in coverage and jump routes. And Green ran a 6.49 in the 60 and 10.62 in the 100-meter dash, per 247 Sports. As always seem to be the case, his technique could use some work, but his I.Q. and instincts will serve him well in making the leap to college.

the hits keep on coming

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (5/6/2020 1:43:06 PM)

We've been passed by Iowa (6th), so we're currently the #3 recruiting team in the Big 10 (9th).
