I know Ed.
I'm scared where they will look/which direction they go.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 10:45:03 AM)

Get Rid of those ugly uniforms, get some pride. Heck, even put little M's on the helmets when you've made a play.

Do something different. This program is wallowing in mediocrity.

Great facilities didn't change things. "Great" recruiting(more like hype and BS) didn't change things.

Keep more of the home kids. First you have to get winning.

Find an identity. Keep it.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 10:48:32 AM)

Case in point ...
Key play of Wisconsins upset of #1 OSU?
Kickoff return to the house.
Minnesota kid.
Rosters of many good teams are littered with MN kids who didn't want to play here.
There is more talent in-state than the regular fan thinks.
Losing the good ones every year hurts. Give them a place they are proud to play for and they will stay. Not all will, but some will.

This is a state with 5+ million residents..........over the years, the good players have left for Nebraska and Iowa when Hayden Frey was at Iowa....now they also go to Wisconsin and continue to leave for Iowa and Nebraska.

With the new DI FCS programs (NDSU, SDSU, USD, UND, along with Northern Iowa), players on the fence elect to go to those programs where they can start instead of providing depth as backups for the U of M's program.

I know that most will want the U to hire a high profile coach or a coordinator at some big time program......I think there are many DI FCS coaches or DI BCS coaches at smaller programs that could step into the program and make it many times better.

Right now, the program really needs someone to at least bring it to a level of respectability.  For all his problems, Glen Mason did that at two places....first at KU, then at U of M....his problem, getting the program to the next level.  But the program has regressed so far under Brewster, it is like starting over again.

and from it

quote:

The most obvious problem was the inability to focus on a single offensive style. Brewster employed Mike Dunbar and the spread offense the first two seasons. Brewster hired Jed Fisch and employed a highly-technical pro style offense the third year, then hired Jeff Horton this season, favoring a run-oriented, ball-control offense.

The Gophers never established an offensive identity, and the defense was an ongoing struggle.

I wonder if they will look at Dale Lennon at Southern Illinois....Dale won a few DII championships at UND and has continued a strong DI FCS program at Southern Illionois.....however, they lost to SDSU on Saturday.

Maybe the U of M can pry away the Boise State coach the way the U of Florida attracted Urban Meyer from Utah at the time.[&:]

Minn won't cough up the money for a high profile coach like the Boise St coach

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 11:31:06 AM)

Whoever is the head coach at Wayzata is the leading candidate. Should come cheap. And at least he has more head coaching experience than Brewster had when he was hired.

That wasn't my point Jim...my post was sarcasm......the Boise State coach would be a fool to go to the U of M.......he might lead his team to a national title at Boise State......he could never lead the U of M program to a national title.

Florida can pull an Urban Meyer away from Utah, a great University....a great University with academics on par with Florida but its athletic program is down a notch from Florida.  Hence, it was a step up in terms of football visibility to go from Utah to Florida.

The U of M, even with its most ardent supports, couldn't come close to pulling a coach away from boise State......the two institutions are not even in the same conversation academically with the U of M a major research institution....Boise State is the weakest of three institutions in Idaho academically with U of Idaho first, Idaho State second and then Boise State.  But the football program at Boise State is light years, light years ahead of the U of M........one would be a fool to leave Boise State, even if the money was made available at the U of M.

For all the U of M has going for it and it is a major research institution probably ranking in the top 20 in the country, its athletic programs have continued to spiral down under Joel Maturi's watch...

Before you get a new football coach, you need a new AD.  do not let Maturi be in charge of the new hire.  Get rid of Maturi first.

That is why Joel Maturi needs to be fired before a new head coach is selected.

Ryan Buckingham -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 11:46:02 AM)

Mike Leach got run out of Texas Tech.  Maybe we could bring him here?  No way that Tony Dungy comes home, but it sure would be nice.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 11:49:15 AM)

Anyone know if the 1:00 press conference will be televised?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 12:05:49 PM)

I'll say what I said when his team beat us ...
Ed Meirkort at USD brought in a team whose roster (yes, every player) consisted of players the U would not commit to., and he came into our house and beat us fair and square with them.
Ed has his drawbacks, but at least he is the complete product .... a tireless recruiter, a motivator, and a good football mind.
If you watched him ont he sidelines, he simply head-coached the team.
He listened to his assistants as they ran the team, just as intently as the players did. And they kicked a supposedly mightier team's ass all over TCF that day.
No DI re-treads please,
Someone hungry, proud, and with a chip on his shoulder, not a buddy in his back pocket.

Did I fix that for you?

Guest -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 12:16:25 PM)

There is a coach out there the U of M should look at....Frank Solich at Ohio University.

He got royally screwed at Nebraska......

He has built a very good program at Ohio.....pretty tough to do when you are in an area where all the recruiting wolves go to pick players.

And Solich hired Peleni when he was at Nebraska.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 12:24:31 PM)

As long as leach doesn't lock kids in bunkers anymore, I'm ok with him ... we could be TT North.
he'd drive the administrators at the U absolutely crazy.

I'll say this again .... the U of M cheats less, and gets caught more, than any other institution in the USA
The fact this chicken-shit school has ever been on probation or suspension is a ridiculous shame.
The major cheaters in college sports cheat at level 100 the U comes in at level 2 or 3.
We are ridiculously careful about how we operate, and the Nazi, errrr NCAA comes down on us harder than anyone else.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 12:49:43 PM)

How about Phillip Fullmer. He might be ready to return

Might be a good choice....think he got the shaft at Tennessee.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 1:15:58 PM)

Fulmer can't act (if you saw Blind Side) .... will never be able to "sell" Maturi. [&:]

Besides .. he reminds me of Fred Thompson, which means Skilz would end up working for him. [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 3:34:11 PM)

Every time I watch Marion Barber these days .... It makes me realize how poorly the Gophers have run their program for YEARS.
There have been some fantastic players play here. With really, nothing to show for it. For decades.

Rumor has it that he might be in the running for the Vandy job, as well as AD at UT. Hamilton will be fired as soon as a long term school president is hired.

Intriguing choice though.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 5:45:24 PM)

Strib says early rumors:

Leslie Frazier
Marc Trestman
Mike Leach

If Dungy only has input/recommendations...Frazier has a good shot.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 5:46:43 PM)

I actually like all three of those guys.
I see at least two with Pro aspirations, tho ...

Ryan Buckingham -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 6:25:16 PM)

Leslie Frazier does not strike me as a guy who would be a good recruiter, but who knows.  I'd take Leach in a heartbeat.  Anybody that can keep the good kids from leaving Minnesota would be great.  Leach could make it like Purdue was under Tiller.  Kids love to play in the spread.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/17/2010 6:37:44 PM)

Wasn't Leach the guy who locked some kid with a concussion in a closet? NO WAY!!!
