I am not a Vick fan and have never liked him. But you can't suspend the man before the trial - as much as it pains people. This is setting a dangerous precedent and is clearly against NFL policy. I think Vick's lawyers will burn the NFL on this one.
Honestly, Roger Goddell can do whatever he wants. The NFL is a private entity and becuz the NFLPA kind of gave him the lee-way to kind-of play judge, jury and executioner with Pacman Jones, it filters down to Michael Vick. People forget this is not the first incident of questionable conduct perpretrated by Vick. He got stopped in the airport with what was then thought to be an illegal substance (seems like that story kind of just went away, so who knows what really happened there), one of his cars was stopped with two idiots inside drunk and in the possession of drugs, not to mention he told Goddell a bold-faced lie to his face when asked about the dog issue when it first surfaced. I did not know this, but prior to all of that, Vick was in an airport with a couple of people and two of those folks stole a watch. Bottom line, this guy is a bad apple and surrounds himself with similar characters. And while he may not party and shoot up strip joints like rockstar Pacman Jones, his conduct is nontheless terrible. Banning him from training camp was a small hit and is not the same thing as a season suspension. But even if it was, how was that not the right thing to do? Pacman Jones was suspended for an entire season without having gone to trial and the NFLPA bought off on that. Pacman was not even indicted by a Federal Grand Jury. So how is this any different? Michael Vick is a dumbass that did not know how to not act like a small time hood, fighting dogs for thousands of dollars after he started making millions a year. And it will be his downfall.
No, you can not do whatever you want even if it is a private entity "According to a source, that means Goodell will have trouble making a suspension stick. Worse, it could put the union in the position of having to fight the league on Vick's behalf, a potential public relations nightmare. " BINGO
Why would the NFLPA fight on Vick's behalf when they were in on the coversation as to what Vick's intial punishment would be? The NFLPA bought off on the training camp suspension and the Commissioner reserves the right to tack on any length of time to any of the NFL team-imposed suspensions. Again, let's not forget that Michael Vick has been indicted on four different Federal charges by a grand jury. Not accussed by municipal police or involved in an incident at a strip club or something real minor like Ced Griffin's pants sag saga. The only saving grace Vick has in the NFL's case is Roger Goddell wants to review the 18-page indictment before he proceeds with any kind of punishment, from the Falcons or his office.
None of that matters The NFL has established precedent in this area and they can't change that for Vick. Whether you think he is guilty or not if they try and take away his pay before a conviction they will lose
Explain Pacman.

Ian Joseph -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 5:55:25 AM)

I thought about saying that, Todd. But I felt it was too easy to throw that rock and the end result would not be worth it. Cheers. :lol:

Ian Joseph -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 5:55:54 AM)

I just want 50 posts.

Jeff Jesser -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 6:03:03 PM)

Some talking head on ESPN last night was saying the prosecutors threw a curve yesterday and let the judge know that more charges are coming.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 8:15:04 PM)

We're gonna miss this dude. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp07/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2949645 Probably already reported, but Dolphins signed Ginn Jr.

Duane Sampson -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 8:37:49 PM)

quote:

QB Joey Harrington opened the Falcons' training camp as the starter with Michael Vick barred by the league from attending. How does that change new coach Bobby Petrino's system? "That’s a good question," Petrino said. "The answer is we really don’t know just yet because we’re going back through the same installations that we’ve done the previous two times and, once we do that, it’s up to me and the rest of our coaches to really understand what parts of it Joey executes the best. Then you form the offense around him. Really nothing has changed yet. Certainly each quarterback does something different and (you) try to highlight what they do well."
each quarterback does something different and (you) try to highlight what they do well So...... they won't really have any highlighting to do for Harrington. :lol:

So.Mn.Fan -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 9:54:53 PM)

Joe Thomas hooked up by Browns for $42.5 mil for 5 years. Okoye signs with Texans, 6 years for $17.7 mil with $12.8 mil in bonuses. Lots of contract action today as expected. Ginn Jr signed, but terms not released yet.

Jim Frenette -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 11:30:08 PM)

I can't believe that Jim Rome and I agree on something. Yesterday listening to Vick's lawyer say Mike apologises to his Mother, his teammates and the organization, my first thought was, if he is innocent like he just told the judge, why does he need to apologize? Rome today said the same thing.

Guest -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 11:39:46 PM)

Vick will end up in a raiduh's uni after his jail time is up, if he is not suspended for life.

Toby Stumbo -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/27/2007 11:55:13 PM)

Falcons | Harrington named starter Fri, 27 Jul 2007 14:25:46 -0700 The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino has named QB Joey Harrington the team's starting quarterback.

Ray Peterson -> Todd Mallet -- this promo's just for you! What a great idea (7/28/2007 8:00:05 AM)

http://www.startribune.com/510/story/1329528.html Dogs will have their day: Vick doll coming to St. Paul By Mark Craig, Star Tribune Last update: July 27, 2007 – 11:03 PM Sparked by a minor league baseball team's promotion in California and a clever idea from a longtime supporter, the St. Paul Saints are making plans to give away 2,500 "Michael Vick" dog chew toys designed with the Atlanta Falcons' team colors and the No. 7 worn by the team's embattled quarterback. "People expect so many crazy things from us," said Sean Aronson, director of media relations for the American Association baseball team. "When the idea was presented to us, we simply couldn't resist." Vick pleaded not guilty Thursday to federal charges related to an alleged dogfighting ring. His trial begins Nov. 26. The details described in the 18-page indictment against Vick and the national uproar that has ensued led NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to order Vick to stay away from training camp while the league investigates. Falcons owner Arthur Blank said the team considered suspending Vick for the maximum four games allowed under the collective bargaining agreement, but agreed to let Goodell handle it at this point. Fans have protested the Falcons’ Flowery Ranch, Ga., complex, the NFL offices in New York and outside the Richmond, Va., courtroom in which Vick was arraigned. Sunday, the Long Beach (Calif.) Armada minor league baseball team will hold a "Michael Vick Animal Awareness Day." Any fan who brings in a Vick shirt or jersey to be thrown into a bonfire receives free admission and a donation in their name to a local animal rights organization. A Saints fan, who doesn't want his name published, came up with the chew toy idea and emailed it to Aronson. Aronson said the Saints would have more details on the promotion on Monday. He added: "We think it's a great idea. It's a way for our fans to let their dogs get back at Michael Vick." Mark Craig • mcraig@startribune.com

Chris Olson -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/28/2007 12:22:26 PM)

The chew toy is a hilarious idea...I hope they don't get some lawsuit slapped on them...I suppose they can do it without actually using Vick's nor the Falcons' name...really funny :lol:

Ian Joseph -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/28/2007 4:27:22 PM)

Michael Vick is sunk. One of his co-defendants has agreed to a plea bargain and will have his hearing Monday morning. It was on ESPN all last night. More than likely, dude is going to roll-over on Vick to save his own ass. So basically, even if he was not the guy, Vick will be fingered as the ring leader. Way to go, dummy.

Jim Frenette -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/28/2007 8:13:19 PM)

I see where Donrus is pulling the Vick trading cards from their sets for this year

Chicken Legs -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/29/2007 12:24:46 AM)

There goes any chance of me drafting Mike Vick in the first round in my Dallas, TX fantasy football league? Oh well...I had Vick a couple years ago. He frustrates any FF owner.

Duane Sampson -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/29/2007 5:19:59 PM)

Vick's a hot commodity in the fantasy dog fighting leagues. :oops: not funny........

Duane Sampson -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/30/2007 1:50:36 PM)

I heard on the radio this morning that one of Vick's cohorts is heading to WV to possibly "cut a deal" with prosecutors.. What these guys are doing with dogs is unforgettable and unforgivable. But, man, I hate it when the "deals" are cut where the pigeon skates for stabbing his "friends" in the back. I guess you can say they're all losers but the deal maker drops even lower in my opinion.

Lynn G. -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/30/2007 2:05:16 PM)

My only regret about the Mike Vick charges is that it wasn't good 'ol boy Brett Favre that was the culprit. :twisted:

-- 200 People Protest to Support Vick -- Mon Jul 30, 2007 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports about 200 people braved rain and thunderclaps outside the Georgia Dome on Sunday to condemn the country, the media, Nike and, most of all, the Atlanta Falcons for treating QB Michael Vick like a dog. "We Support Vick a Human Being Over Dogs," was the message of one placard to honking passing cars on Northside Drive. Other supporters said they believed Vick should be given the benefit of the doubt until his day in court. "Look at what he has done for this city — he's made this city a ton of money every Sunday," said Hiram Melvin, 50 of Decatur. "This dogfighting has been going on for years. It's not something that just started. It's not a big deal." Sunday's rally was organized by New Order, a Marietta-based human rights group.

-- Vick Co-Defendant Pleads Guilty to Dogfighting Conspiracy -- Mon Jul 30, 2007 The Virginian-Pilot reports a co-defendant told federal prosecutors that Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick "almost exclusively funded" a dogfighting operation known as Bad Newz Kennels and provided the money to bet on matches, according to a document released today in conjunction with the man’s guilty plea in U.S. District Court. Tony Taylor of Hampton formally accepted a plea deal this morning to the charge that he conspired with Vick, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips to create and run a dogfighting venture in 2001. Taylor said he left the operation in September 2004 "following a disagreement with Phillips and others," according to the statement of facts that was filed with his guilty plea today. Taylor told U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson he voluntarily confessed to committing the crime in partnership with Peace, Phillips and Vick. He has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the cases against Vick and the other defendants. Taylor faces a maximum term of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. His plea agreement did not promise him any reduction in that sentence.

Jeff Jesser -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/30/2007 8:56:46 PM)

Wow, he is royally screwed. This gets worse for him everyday. I wonder what the "new" charges are going to be.

El Duderino -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/30/2007 10:25:06 PM)

"We Support Vick a Human Being Over Dogs!" :angry: Do they support Charles Manson, a human, over dogs? Would they have supported Adolph Hitler, a human, over dogs? What a bunch of freaking idiots.

Trekgeekscott -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/30/2007 11:10:01 PM)

When I first read that I thought it was something out of "The Onion". When I realized it wasn't that it wasn't a parody, I realized there are some people that are just crazy. There are some people that don't care if their favorite football players are sick human beings as long as they are scoring touchdowns. It is really sad if you think about it.

Jeff Jesser -> RE:Mike Vick case (7/31/2007 4:19:53 AM)

You have to understand where Vick is from (and honestly, where he is representing). The communities there worship him so the locals think he's being targeted. He does a lot of good in those local communities. He's a hero.
