League-wide, the pace of signings has been slow, which is typical. The Lions' most difficult negotiations will be with their first-round pick, wide receiver Calvin Johnson . He was drafted second overall, and indications are agent Bus Cook -- whose stable of clients includes Packers quarterback Brett Favre -- will ask for a deal that includes close to $30 million in guaranteed money.
I thought those first contracts were slotted some what. Maybe they are trying to push the envelop a little. I hate agents.

Toby Stumbo -> RE:The Lions (7/17/2007 5:16:51 PM)

The NFL needs to come up with a slot limit like the NBA, the one thing they do right.

Duane Sampson -> RE:The Lions (7/17/2007 5:19:09 PM)

But not the NBA's guaranteed contracts. WOW!

Toby Stumbo -> RE:The Lions (7/17/2007 5:29:07 PM)

No, not that!!! Just the rookie slots, they work well IMO.

Jim Frenette -> RE:The Lions (7/17/2007 5:36:14 PM)
No, not that!!! Just the rookie slots, they work well IMO.
They do as most of the #1's are already signed including the top picks. Football we are delayed right up until camp and some times longer.

Signs point to Johnson, Lions getting closer Mike O'Hara / The Detroit News ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions and top draft pick Calvin Johnson appear to have narrowed the gap on financial aspects of a contract for the wide receiver, but still must negotiate on the structure and language related to the proposed deal. Johnson was absent from training camp again Wednesday. It was the seventh day of practice he has missed. The Lions and Johnson's agent have been talking about a six-year contract. It reportedly would be close to the contract signed last year by Saints running back Reggie Bush, who was drafted second overall. Bush got more than $26 million in guaranteed money. There have been unconfirmed reports that the Lions' offer to Johnson included as much as $30 million in guarantees. Tom Lewand, the Lions' chief operating officer, spoke with Johnson's agent, Bus Cook, late Tuesday night and had more talks planned for today. Johnson attended Georgia Tech and lives near Atlanta. He has been in and out of Detroit since camp opened, and it is believed he is back in Detroit now waiting for a deal to be struck. "I think he's as anxious as any of us are," Lewand said, adding that he did not know if Johnson is in Detroit now. "I respect that. I really want to try to move this deal forward as quickly as we possibly can." Injury update: Middle linebacker Teddy Lehman was held out of drills Wednesday morning. He suffered a slight separation in a running drill Tuesday morning. He is not sure when he will return, Lehman said. Practice plan: Coach Rod Marinelli had a short practice, without pads, Wednesday morning. A heavier drill was scheduled for the afternoon, Marinelli said.

Detroit Lions sign No. 2 pick Calvin Johnson to 6-year deal, ending wide receiver's holdout August 3, 2007 Johnson signed a six-year deal with the Detroit Lions on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, ending the No. 2 overall pick's eight-day holdout. AP - Aug 3, 8:58 am EDT More Photos ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -- Calvin Johnson knows exactly why he just became very wealthy. Moments after signing a six-year contract with the Detroit Lions, the rookie wide receiver found himself on the first team during a two-minute drill. "I wasn't surprised. I was expecting to be out there with the first team," Johnson said. "That's why they picked me at No. 2." Johnson's eight-day holdout ended early Friday morning when he, agent Bus Cook and Lions chief operating officer Tom Lewand reached an agreement. Johnson signed the deal just in time for an 8:30 a.m. practice. "I had tried to stay patient at the beginning of this, but the last few days have been nerve-racking," he said. "I'm just glad that I'm out here playing football again, not worrying about the contract." ADVERTISEMENT Lewand declined to give financial details of the deal, and a message was left for Cook. But NFL.com reported the deal was worth $55.5 million, including more than $27 million in guaranteed money. Johnson's arrival came at a perfect time for the Lions, its first public workout. "We choreographed that pretty well, didn't we?" Lewand joked. A large cheer went up once the 500 fans in attendance realized Johnson was on the field, and more applause followed every catch he made in the two-hour practice. "I thought today went pretty well," Johnson said before signing autographs. "I made some mistakes, but I was able to retain a lot of what I picked up in (offseason team activities)." Johnson was regarded by some as the best player in the draft after catching 78 passes for 1,202 yards and 15 touchdowns during his All-America junior season at Georgia Tech. He won the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's top college receiver. The Lions, 3-13 last season, made Johnson the fourth receiver taken with their first pick in the past five drafts. Detroit is 24-72 and has missed the playoffs every season since Lions president Matt Millen joined the front office in 2001. Johnson's expected to team with Roy Williams and Mike Furrey to give the Lions a triple-threat receiving corps. "I have a very good feeling about this group," Lions coach Rod Marinelli said. "We've got some very special players on this field." Furrey and Williams are equally confident after working with Johnson during offseason practices. "No one is going to be able to stop us when we are all out on the field," Furrey said. "People are excited about Calvin, but they don't even know what they've got yet. He's going to be one of the top receivers in the league in a couple years." Marinelli also expects Johnson to affect Detroit's rushing attack. "When we have those three men on the field, and especially when we add Shaun McDonald as a fourth receiver, it is going to force defenses to spread themselves wide," he said. "That's going to open up a lot of room for Tatum Bell or Kevin Jones." NOTES: To make room for Johnson on the roster, the Lions placed second-round pick QB Drew Stanton on injured reserve with a knee injury. "It's disappointing, but the decision is out of my hands," the former Michigan State star said. ... McDonald sat out most of the morning practice with an icepack on his left knee but said he was OK.

Ian Joseph -> RE:The Lions (8/5/2007 1:05:51 AM)

If the Lions start lining up 4 WRs, they had better start blocking and protecting the quaterback better. You could line up Herman Moore, Johnnie Morton, Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams and it would not matter if Kitna is always on his back or under fire.

-- O'Sullivan Getting 2nd Team Reps -- Tue Aug 7, 2007 The Detroit Free Press reports Lions QB J.T. O'Sullivan, the journeyman who signed just before training camp, continues to get the reps as the Lions' No. 2 quarterback. QB Dan Orlovsky, the 2005 fifth-round pick, continues to stand around and watch, holding his helmet in his hand. "Nothing to read into it," HC Rod Marinelli said Monday. "We think he's got some good stuff going, and we're taking a good, hard look at him." O'Sullivan needs to practice so he can compete with Orlovsky, who has had a year and a half in this system. The Lions open the exhibition season Thursday night against Cincinnati. "There's only so many reps in a day you can get," Marinelli said. "Then the preseason will come, and we'll see how it'll play out." They'd better hope Kitna stays healthy :lol:

Lions cut Drummond; Walters, Cason and McDonald can return kicks, punts August 24, 2007 BY NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER After practice Thursday, Eddie Drummond was summoned to the Lions' front office and told he was being released. He turned in his playbook, then stopped by the coaches' offices to say good-bye. "It's only a business, and I've got to look at it like that," Drummond said in a phone interview later in the afternoon. "It wasn't a sudden thing that just caught me off-guard. It's been a little bit up and down ever since this year started." After signing as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State in 2002, Drummond became a return specialist. He was often injured, but at times he was the Lions' most electric player. He went to the Pro Bowl after the '04 season. Despite playing only 11 games, he became the second NFL player to return two kickoffs and two punts for touchdowns in a season. But Drummond hasn't stood out the same way since, and he has never found a role on offense. The Lions have players who do double duty. Wide receiver Troy Walters returns kicks and punts. Running back Aveion Cason returns kicks; wide receiver Shaun McDonald returns punts. "I expected something to happen just because I wasn't getting an opportunity to compete with the rest of the receivers, and I know some of the coaches didn't like just special teams players," Drummond said. "It was kind of obvious that something was going to end up happening." The irony is that Drummond, 27, stayed in Detroit as a free agent last year because the Lions had hired Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator. Drummond, 5-feet-9, 190 pounds, thought he could fill the role of the small, speedy receiver Martz had used so successfully in St. Louis. Martz praised Drummond's play at receiver during training camp last year, saying he was "very, very pleased." But after catching a pass in each of the first two regular-season games, Drummond didn't catch one in the third. Then he didn't play offense anymore. He was responsible for knowing multiple receiver positions, and he didn't execute to Martz's standards. "He had very high expectations for me when he came in," Drummond said. "Everything was actually in line. It was perfect. I was actually his guy in preseason and in training camp last year. I played the first three games, I believe, and then after the third game ... "Made a couple of mistakes in that game, and I haven't really seen the field since the third game of the season last year." The timing of Drummond's release gives him a better chance to land another job. Drummond said he expected to sign elsewhere soon and he had heard Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Denver were interested. As a Lion, Drummond averaged 23.6 yards returning kicks and 9.8 returning punts. He had six touchdowns. "It's been a good six years here, 5 1/2 years here, in Detroit," Drummond said. "Hopefully I've brought a lot of excitement to the city. I'm not totally out of Detroit. I bought a condo here. So I'm going to be coming in here and visiting and everything like that. Six years in a place, you've got a lot invested in it."

I would be alright if he was our #2.

Trekgeekscott -> RE:The Lions (9/24/2007 3:45:54 PM)

Well, Maybe now all the so called "experts" that have been fawning all over this great Lions team will take a step back and actually analyze the team. The beat up on a Bad Raiders team. The barely beat a bad Vikings team at home, and tried to give the game away all day long. The got positively smoked by a mediocre Eagles team. The Lions are not all that people. They are 06 Saints wanna bes.

Steve Lentz -> RE:The Lions (10/7/2007 5:29:06 PM)

Today will tell us a lot about the Lions. They've lost like 20 straight games at Washington. Still a team that puts up 30 some points in a QTR. against the Bears is a little scary to me.

Lynn G. -> RE:The Lions (10/7/2007 5:30:57 PM)

The last I heard, Calvin Johnson was still out with the back problems. Any update on that?

Now the Lions let the Redskins walk all over them. They haven't beaten anyone yet. They haven't even played anyone worthwhile yet. And they don't look all that consistant to me. Lions are pretenders.

To clarify, They haven't beaten any worthwhile team yet. And almost gave the Vikes that game. That being said they could still win 10 games per Kitna's prediction, cause the NFC is SO BAD...

Steve Lentz -> RE:The Lions (10/9/2007 12:34:22 AM)

That's the whole point. With so many really average teams in the NFC we should at least be competitive. If the Lions and Bears are bad, what are we????
