Testing 1-2-3....Testing!

bgdavis -> RE: [Deleted] (1/14/2014 2:24:58 PM)

The Lions have hired Jim Caldwell as their next coach. I scanned a couple Lions fan forums and the general consensus seemed to be broad dislike over this hire. It may even be prudent to add a few extra suicide hotlines in Detroit. Many felt that Whisenhunt would be the next coach, but he opted to take the Titans HC position instead. Some have suggested that when plan A (Whisenhunt) fell through, there wasn't a plan B, and this is more or less a knee-jerk reaction hiring.

Caldwell's head coaching record is not that great (26-22 in the NFL, 26-63 at Wake Forest), and it seems that many of his early wins at Indy were probqably due to the team he inherited, especially Manning rather than anything special about his coaching ability. In the year when Manning was out, his Colts were a pathetic 2-14. As an OC at the Ravens this past year, they were near the bottom of league in offense, and there were rumors that he might get fired before next season. Leave it to the Lions to make this kind of move. I'll be surprised if he lasts more than 2 seasons and the Lions aren't at the bottom of the NFC North each of those years. At this point, I'm glad the Lions hired him, since it means he's off the market and there's no chance for the Vikings to hire him.

I agree - I like any hire by another NFC North team that appears to be ill-conceived. Now if only the Packers and Bears could fall apart somehow...

Green Bay is an injury away from being a 7-9 team.  ARodge is everything to that team!

Lynn G. -> RE: [Deleted] (1/14/2014 6:09:42 PM)

Definitely true - as we saw during his injury stretch this year. I don't wish injury on a player, but once he had the injury I was glad that he missed as many games as he did. Young Packer fans didn't even know what it was like to have to rely on a backup quarterback - but now they know.

How convenient that you cut off the end of my quote.

bgdavis -> RE: The Lions (8/21/2014 10:32:37 PM)

Detroit still has Stafford, Megatron and Suh. Suh is in a contract year, so he might be more motivated than he was last year. However, their secondary seems weak, and isn't a recipe for success in today's pass-happy league. Toss in a new coaching staff, and it's hard to judge how this team will fare. It's likely that the Lions progress and the Vikings progress will be compared at numerous points during the season due to both having coaching changes. Right now, a lot of the prognosticators seem to be ranking the Lions a significant ways above the Vikings for their 2014 season projections. However, I'm still of the opinion that Detroit is going to wind up at the bottom of the division this year.

John Childress -> RE: The Lions (8/22/2014 7:47:43 AM)

I think Caldwell is an average coach

But that is an improvement over the crackpot they had before

They should be better

Stafford is average without Megatron.

I wonder if Suh will sulk since they haven't already resigned him?

Ol Gym Shortz was the best thing we in the rest of the Central had going for us.
Caldwell isn't much better, but unfortunately, you KNOW he's probably an improvement.

Thus far, I'm very surprised by the Lions. I figured they'd be a lot worse than they have been. Still a long ways to go, but they could end up being the best team in the NFC North. However, that probably says more about how bad the other 3 teams are turning out to be.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: The Lions (9/22/2014 6:09:54 PM)

I think the Lions finally have a legit coach. They've had the talent for a couple years now. But yeah, the other 3 won't offer much competition. Although, the Bears are like roaches.

The Lions will collapse as always.

They are remarkably consistent about finding some way to screw it up.

That said, they've got themselves a rookie RB who can make some pretty amazing cuts. Expect to hear, "He's no Barry Sanders, but..."

David F. -> RE: The Lions (8/17/2015 3:24:23 PM)

Barry Sanders and now Megatron. I'll take NFL players that are the all-time best at their positions and never won anything while playing for Detroit for $800 Alex...

Didn't see it, but I heard from my Lions-fan friend that Abdullah looked real good. I really liked him at Nebraska, but wasn't sure how he would be for the NFL. I have heard nothing but great things about his work ethic and attitude.

Lions really haven't had a reliable, consistent RB since Barry, have they?

SoMnFan -> RE: The Lions (9/14/2015 2:51:42 PM)

Something about seeing this thread .... The Lions ....... Just cracked me up.
Every time I feel sorry for myself, (being a Viking freak since '61), it helps to think about what being a fan of that team must feel like.
If they ever get it done, before us, like the Seattles and Saints have ..... Well that might just be the end for me. [:D]

Lynn G. -> RE: The Lions (9/14/2015 8:21:34 PM)

Well the Kansas City Royals were the poor little brother team for a long long time and now look at them. At some point the Lions are going to put some things together I suppose.

Unless the shadow of Matt Millen haunts their front office. [:D]

The owner remains the same.

bgdavis -> RE: The Lions (9/28/2015 2:27:17 PM)

Lions might be facing an 0-5 start. They have upcoming games at Seattle (Monday night) and then face Arizona.

So sorry Kitties fans. Detroilet has returned.

Tim Cady -> RE: The Lions (10/16/2016 10:13:00 PM)

don't look now but the Lions are a 500 team and looking better than the Packers!

Trekgeekscott -> RE: The Lions (10/17/2016 9:29:46 AM)

Good for them. I hope the finish ahead of the Packers.

and in a distant second place.

Tim Cady -> RE: The Lions (10/17/2016 6:47:50 PM)

I would be fine with that!
