The season got a bit weirder

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen reportedly threatened to shoot up a hotel and then broke into a teammate’s home during the weekend, a pair of incidents that led to his brief detention and a hospital evaluation.
Griffen, a three-time Pro Bowler, made threats about “shooting up” the Hotel Ivy in Minneapolis on Saturday, law enforcement sources told FOX9. Griffen was seen pacing around the lobby of the hotel and a dispatcher said the suspect warned he would shoot someone if staff didn’t let him into his room, KSTP-TV reported.

Griffen agreed to leave the hotel after police arrived and no weapon was ever brandished, according to multiple reports.

The 30-year-old Vikings star was later detained for allegedly breaking into a teammate’s home, according to FOX9. It was unclear which teammate was the alleged victim. Griffen was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
“We are aware of the situation involving Everson Griffen and certainly concerned by what we have heard,” Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said in a statement. “We are currently focused on Everson’s well-being and providing the appropriate support for him and his family.”
Griffen was set to miss Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills with an injury, but was presumably supposed to join his teammates on the sideline.
It’s unclear whether Griffen will face any discipline.

If he wasn't a wealthy MN Vikings player, he would be in jail right now no questions asked.

Bullshit. You know nothing at all about the police investigation, but you make a bold assumption. As a 270 lb black man in Minneapolis, he could just as easily have been shot by the police.

No, you're being a moron. The cops respond to an incident call. All they see when they get there is a huge black man who has made threats. They don't know who he is at that point. He had no weapon and nobody pressed any charges. Again, you act like you were an eye witness when you really don't know shit about the details or what happened.

Win the next two and the Bills game doesn't really matter.

Lose the next two and IMO Speilman should be fired after the season is over, that likely puts Zim on the clock for 2019.

A split, and they are one of a dozen teams trying to make playoffs.

So, let me get this straight. Speilman assembles a roster that everybody expects to compete for an NFC title and if it underachieves, the man who assembled the roster should be fired and the man who didn't live up to expectations with it should get another chance?

How many years should he get? One playoff win so far. Going to let Speilman pick another coach? A new GM would need a year to evaluate, basically it would put Zimm on the clock.

He wasted 3 picks on a punter and kickers. Usually if you draft one of them they must be exceptional, like Janakowski good, Speilman's are not even in football anymore, they were not average, they were shit. Beyond a waste. Could have took a flyer on 3 lineman.

I don't care what they should do this year, it is what they do that he should be judged on. There are no more excuses, the offensive lines sucks because Speilman has repeatedly ignored in in the draft and in free agency. Treadwell and Cook should have been OL picks. Treadwell sucks and Cook is a RB that can't stay on the field. Spend $80 million on a QB and you protect him with spit balls and chewing gum, that is on Speilman.

I give Zimm credit for the defensive picks, compared to the offensive picks I would say Speilman is getting help when you compare the success.

Nothing is bad luck or building mode with this team. This is a championship contending club. No excuses, none. If it fails, Speilman is 100% at fault.

You have as much as said this roster should win. You can't selectively give Zim credit for the picks you like. Speilman has final say on all draft picks. I will stipulate that he hasn't done enough for the O-line, but after repeated years of draft day cluster f***s going back through Kukla Fran and Zyggie to the Tice and Studwell era, we finally have a competitive roster with big expectations. Whatever you hate about him drafting kickers and not doing enough for the O-line, Speilman has been one our best personnel people.

How many years should a GM get to produce more than 1 playoff win?

Why should a GM get to keep picking coaches and QB's?

Speilman is a success because of expectations? I guess that is pretty good for Minnesota pro sports.

Speilman is so smart he drafted a kicker in the 5th round, when the team desperately needed offensive line depth. But this was a good kicker, somebody that would be around for a generation, great leg, bla bla bla.

Adam Vinatieri wasn't drafted, most kickers are not, even the best of the best. Speilman drafted one in the 5th round, ignoring a glaring need, and picked one that lasted two weeks, which was a week too long.

TJSweens -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins Fans (9/25/2018 12:14:59 PM)

Look at what Speilman has done with personnel in the context of other GM's in the league and you see he has a pretty good track record. Fire him and I guarantee he would snapped up by another organization in a heart beat, while we would probably go back to the triangle of authority. Sure, he made some shitty decisions, but every GM does. He has adjusted in approach and philosophy since he was given final authority and has assembled a pretty damn talented roster. I put firing Speilman in that category of "careful what you wish for".

So how many years do you give a GM? If they win 0 playoff games during Cousin's 3 years does he deserve more time?

Very short book titles. "How to draft offense by Rick Speilman". "The Science of Kicking by Rick Speilman". "Average Offensive Lines on the Cheap by Rick Speilman".

Gardenhire got rehired, doesn't mean I regret firing him. Same goes for a few dozen others at least.

What does Rick pedal to the fans if this year tanks? "Well, I think we need to scale back on defense and refocus on the OL"? Gee, who the hell got us to the point were the OL is one of the worst in the NFL?

Rick has done some good things and overall the team is in pretty good shape talent wise, but I'm getting sick of the OL getting ignored. He's made a bunch of glaring blunders that are putting him on thin ice with me.

ronhextall -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins Fans (9/25/2018 2:46:17 PM)

If they don't get it done in the next 3 years they are likely starting over, probably be in cap hell with an old roster and need to cut salaries. Will need to bottom out and get a new QB (unless Sloter is the answer). If they have won nothing Speilman doesn't deserve to try again.

Go ahead, go to another team. I was GM for 10 years...won one playoff game. BFD. That is basically Ron Gardenhire's resume. Was manager forever and won one playoff series, last game he won in post season Santana was the starting pitcher.

The shittiness of the O-line offsets any other talent the team has. Further, the changes in the way the NFL is causing the referees to enforce hits on the QB and all tackles in general is causing the game to be played closer to touch football or even flag football.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins Fans (9/25/2018 3:17:34 PM)

Per Police

Griffen having issues for "weeks" and banned from practice facilities.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins Fans (9/25/2018 3:19:32 PM)

The Minnesota Vikings banned defensive end Everson Griffen from practice last week and asked him to seek mental health treatment, according to The Star Tribune.
Vikings player development director Les Pico told police that Griffen "has really been struggling for the past few weeks" and "has been explosive, screaming and yelling" at practice, reports the Tribune.
The team sent the defensive end and his agent a letter last Thursday saying that he was not allowed back until he had a mental health evaluation, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Griffen is currently being evaluated at a Minnesota hospital after concerns were raised over his mental health this past weekend. Pelissero reported Monday that a police spokesman told him authorities were called to investigate an incident which took place at the Hotel Ivy in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday. However, the other person involved retreated from the scene immediately and was not identified.

https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/09/24/vikings-everson-griffen-mental-health-evaluation

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins Fans (9/25/2018 3:21:30 PM)

Griffen was allegedly lying on the floor of the Hotel Ivy's lobby and threatening to assault staff employees, according to the Tribune.
On Saturday afternoon, Griffen's wife met with police and said that he awoke in the middle of the night on Sept. 16 and left their house. He returned last Wednesday only to leave again and not return until Saturday morning. According to the Tribune, Griffen had been staying at the Hotel Ivy.
Griffen's wife told police that he had become "combative" and needed to be medicated. An officer called Griffen on his cellphone on Saturday afternoon, and the defensive end told the officer that he was going to be gone for a week and started rambling before hanging up.

His wife later told police that Griffen was at Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes' home, where he was trying to break in. After a police officer met with Griffen, who agreed to be taken in for mental health treatment, the defensive end fled from the ambulance. Griffen later agreed to continue the trip under police escort, reports the Tribune.

Zimmer refuse to put a "dime" package in with enough DB's and Safeties?

I want a pound of flesh it the season goes bad. Spielman or Zimmer or both need to be gone.

Zimmer is horrible at offense, clock management, and philosophy of sitting on a lead no matter how small against any type of opponent. If he can't coach up a defense to an elite level he is worthless.
