Seriously, soccer has riots in the stands, basketball allows government overthrows under the basket during free throws, hockey crowds raise the roof during shoot-outs, but weiners like Roger Federer and Tiger Woods must have intense quiet.
Screw that. I'd pay good money to see Rodney Dangerfield or Joe Flaherty follow Tiger around and air-horn him on every bunker shot. Now THAT'd be good TV.  


Well said.....love the college BB games when the free throw shooter is looking at the opposing crowd swaying in unison...try focusing on a still basket when the surroundings are moving.

Golfers are a bunch of wusses, pansies, whatever. 

Oh wait, it has to be quiet so after the drive, we can hear that idiot yell, You da man........how about, you da pansy.

PINE TAR PLAY

Thurman Munson of the Yankees has just driven home a run in a 1975 game against the Twins.  But the Twins' manager, claiming that Munson has too much pine tar on his bat, appeals the play.  (The rules permit up to 18 inches of pine tar from the handle to the barrel.)  Upon examination, the umpires find that the pine tar significantly exceeds the maximum limit.  What do the umpires do?

Normally, yes.  But in this case, it's the Yankees involved, in which case Munson is awarded the home run, the crowd  is forced to provide a standing ovation for not less than 30 seconds and the fan who caught the ball is obliged to clean it before returning it to the Steinbrenner trophy case.

The umpires can remove the bat from the game but that's it.  Munson can't be called out and the run can't be removed.

George Brett was called out after his famous homerun, but that was reversed on appeal.  The rule only allows for removal of the bat, nothing more.

ANSWER TO PINE TAR PLAY

Well, first they look at the rule book.  When they find that this particular rule is not specifically covered by the text, they have to look up indirect references to help them form a conclusion.  The references that they find are:  1)  a batter will be out when he hits an illegally batted ball;  2)  an illegally batted ball is one that is hit with a bat that does not conform to the rules; and 3) the bat handle may be covered with any foreign material, including pine tar, to improve the grip, as long as it does not exceed 18 inches from the knob to barrel.

If in the umpire's opinion, the foreign substance exceeds the 18-inch limit, the arbiter shall remove the bat from the game.  Based upon that information, the umpires conclude that the bat was illegal and Munson is out.  "A rule is a rule,"  they say, and the Yankees do not appeal.

PINE-TAR REPRISE

Some time after Munson's pine-tar incident, there was the more famous 1983 one at Yankee Stadium.  the Royals were trailing the Yankees, 3-2, in the top of the ninth.  With two out, and no one on base, U.L. Washington singled off reliever Goose Gossage, and George Brett followed with an upper-deck homer that gave the Royals a 4-3 lead.  The Yankees filed and appeal, which the umpires upheld, based on the amount of pine tar on Brett's bat.  Brett was called out for using an illegal bat.  So New York left the field with an apparent 3-2 victory.  But the Royals protested to the American League President Lee McPhail.  Did McPhail uphold the protest?  Why or why not?

McPhail upheld the protest because:

No one really likes the Yankees;
The original appeal on the part of the Yankees was not valid, and therefore acting as if the homerun never occurred as a remedy was not appropriate.
