I think you nailed the rest of them.

So you only completely botched the Mets.

djskillz -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 12:07:11 PM)

Thinking about it, it really does suck, just for history's sake, that there's no place for guys like Walter Johnson, Sam Rice, or Goose Goslin in a format like this. Again, The Big Train is likely the greatest pitcher that ever lived. Yet he's "missing" from everything in this conversation.

He shows up here:

Greatest Living Players
Hank Aaron
Johnny Bench
Sandy Koufax
Willie Mays

Greatest Negro Leagues Players
Cool Papa Bell
Josh Gibson
Buck O'Neil
Satchel Paige

Greatest Pioneers
Walter Johnson
Nap Lajoie
Christy Mathewson
Cy Young

OK, I guess I missed the Pioneers/Negro League players. Great that they honored those guys.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 12:09:09 PM)

Buck O'Neill wasn't one of the 4 greatest Negro League players. But I understand why he made the cut.

Yep. Importance.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 12:09:58 PM)

Why wasn't Ty Cobb a pioneer? Same era, right?

Yes. Could say the same of guys like Wagner/Hornsby. And even Ruth/Gehrig.

Strange how they did that. Seems like a rather arbitrary category.

djskillz -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 12:17:15 PM)

Good piece on others in the conversation for the Negro Leagues: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/55331/ten-greatest-negro-leaguers-of-all-time

I've always been so fascinated by the history there. I always say I would go back and watch Mantle and Johnson of any player/pitcher, live. But honestly, I'd go back to the Negro Leagues of any era/league to watch if I could.

I think it was used for the guys they knew should have made the Franchise Four, but they were cut out because of fans voting for more recent guys.

Cobb made the Tigers; Ruth made the Yankees. So they didn't have to put them on the pioneer list. Shoulda put Jeter on it though.

You should read Posnanski's book on Buck O'Neill if you haven't already. Some great stories.

Shoulda put Jeter on the 4 for the Yanks?

No way. Those 4 are a cut above, IMO.

Jeter on the 4 for the Yanks?

Jeter isn't on the 4 for the Yanks, so they should have made room for him on the Pioneer list.

The Braves are a tough list to crack. But it's tough not seeing Eddie Mathews on it. Chipper or Mathews?

Matthews. Not by a lot, but Matthews.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 1:18:46 PM)

Who has the best foursome? I guess you can't argue against the Yankees. Crap.

As for next, I would consider the Braves a contender even with the Chipper over Mathews snafu. They are "close enough."

They really botched the Cardinals by leaving Pujols off. I guess that's a sign it's a good list. But Lou Brock kind of ruins it for me. And Ozzie=defense only. So no.

Call me crazy. I'm taking the Braves. The Yankees list is hard to compare with the Braves because the Yanks have no pitching.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 1:19:36 PM)

Tigers have a good list. No pitching though.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 1:21:43 PM)

I'm sure the Reds are missing a crapload of guys. They only chose modern players. Great modern players. But think of how many players have been through that organization since its beginning.

djskillz -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 1:39:57 PM)

That Giants' list would be pretty nasty with Mays/Bonds/Matthewson/Marichal. 3 of those 4 guys are top 20 or so all-time. 2 in the top 10, arguably top 5 position players.

djskillz -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 1:42:44 PM)

Agree; Cards have a heck of a list. But Braves do as well, especially if Matthews.

A's also "should" have a sneakily good list with Rickey and Foxx. Grove should be on their list as well instead of Eck or Jackson.

djskillz -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/16/2015 1:46:46 PM)

Oh, and the Red Sox. "should" list:

Williams
Clemens
CY
Yaz or Pedro

That's a heck of a group. 3 of the top 14 all-time in WAR

YAZ over Pedro.

Pedro was good, but didn't spend his whole career there.

Yaz did it all for the Sox.
Clemens moved the hated Yankees. so many a Sox fan will not agree to him on the list. And he had as many years NOT on the Sox as he did on them.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/24/2015 1:56:32 PM)

In 1996 Ken Griffey Jr. had a WAR of 9.7. He finished 4th in the AL MVP voting that season. What was MVP Juan Gonzalez's WAR in 1996?

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Baseball Trivia (7/24/2015 3:03:38 PM)

Drug War?
War on Poverty?

BOSNIA!!!
