On September 8, 1979, in a game against the Baltimore Orioles, who was the last major league hitter allowed to make a plate appearance without wearing a helmet?

Craig McTavish and it was 1997

I remember that tough guy.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/9/2019 3:47:34 PM)

Just did a sporcle quiz. I got every Twins opening day starting pitcher right except for 3 seasons. I should have guessed at least one of the guys I missed correctly. But I did pretty well to come up with Redfern in 1982, Williams in 1984, and Tewksbury in 1998.

So here are the ones I missed:

1968
1969
1983

Take your guesses on those 3 years.

TJSweens -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/9/2019 3:57:58 PM)

I'd say

Jim Kaat
Dave Boswell
Ann Margret

The correct answer is Robert Smith.

Oh,
Robert Smith is also the answer to this question.

Who is the biggest Dick of all the College Football Talking Heads?

Although, the judges will also accept David Pollack.

And

Who was the running back who stepped out of bounds in the MN/ATL NFC Championship Game when he needed to run the clock?

You got that right.

Over the years I blame Smith for that crap as much as Gary Anderson. Smith wasn't a team first guy, I can't blame him for not wanting to take the punishment but it cost an entire franchise a trip to the Super Bowl.

Robert Smith ran harder and tougher in that game than possibly any other game he ever played. Going out of bounds wasn't nearly as significant as some like to think it was.

Smith pounded out tough (too conservative play calling) yards between the tackles. He out performed Jamal Anderson, who led the league in attempts that season. Anderson was built like a fire hydrant, yet it was Smith who gutted out the tough yards. And per usual, didn't put the ball on the carpet.

There is a long list of blame before I get to Smith in that game.
Green, Anderson, Cunningham, Griffith certainly made bigger blunders.

What really pissed me off about Anderson, he threw Berger under the bus, complaining about a bad hold.

Was it Berger who threw Mike Morris under the bus?

Dean Chance
Jim Perry
Ida Lupino

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/9/2019 4:09:29 PM)

Dean Chance is correct for 1968.

The other two are incorrect, Roy.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/9/2019 4:11:37 PM)

1969 is a real head-scratcher as to why he was the opening day starter. Must have been some sort of odd circumstance.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/9/2019 4:14:33 PM)

Clearly nobody is gonna get these right, so here are the answers:

1969: Tom Hall

1983: Brad Havens

TJSweens -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/9/2019 4:21:03 PM)

Wow, I never would have guessed Tommy "The Blade" Hall.

I thought Ann Margaret, too [:-]

Well, Brad Havens kind of threw like Ann Margret.

Another wonder draft pick that flamed out.

The one that really bummed me out was Pete Redfern.
He was just getting to better than average and he pitched hurt, so they released him. Had to settle for some $

Then just over a year later he got hurt in a diving accident after AAA w/the Dodgers.

I guess Redfern is still partially paralyzed.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/9/2019 5:02:00 PM)

Nolasco was one of the last ones I came up with.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/10/2019 1:33:43 PM)

On April 5th, 1983 at the Metrodome, Brad Havens pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 8 runs to the Tigers in his only Opening Day start. Which Twins pitcher relieved Havens in the 2nd inning of that game?

More to the point ... who cares?

It's called the Baseball Trivia thread! If you don't know or don't like it, don't play.

No, the point of trivia is that the topic be somewhat interesting. Who relieved Brad Havens in the second inning of a blowout is not trivia. It's just something from a list of stuff, nobody gives a shit about.

So you have no idea. Kinda sad really. You probably watched that game. But you can't even venture a guess.

PETE FILSON

I probably could have guessed that if someone asked the question to me.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/10/2019 1:49:03 PM)

And I was 5!!!

TJSweens -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/10/2019 1:56:16 PM)

The fact that you have nothing better to do with your time then guess who took over in the second inning of a game where Brad Havens was getting rocked is nothing to brag about. Not to mention, you stumbled across it when you looked up that Brad Havens started the 1983 opener.

I was curious as to how he fared in that opener.

twinsfan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (5/10/2019 2:03:37 PM)

What Twins pitcher started the 2nd game of the 1983 season?
