So you think he would set the modern day record for triples in a season before he's even major league ready?

No. I also don't think he'll/he'd get 35 in the minor league season. Those will tail off. But I do think he'd have a lot more than 2 as a major leaguer this year. Maybe something like 8. The kid is crazy fast. Remember how he turned a sac fly into a run from 2b? That's how fast Buxton is.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/22/2015 9:14:34 PM)

Jorge Polanco, our 21 year old shortstop, has the lowest OPS of the first 6 hitters on that team, at .762 currently (still plenty good given his age/position). All the other 5 guys are over .800, with Kepler at .972 as of this writing.

TJSweens -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/23/2015 1:05:35 PM)

It's time for the Twins to quit dicking around and manufacturing excuses and get Pinto up here to be the #1 catcher. As I watch the season unfold, Suzuki is a total liability in the lineup. His .228 average and .672 OPS and 74 OPS+ cannot be compensated for by any level of defense.

SoMnFan -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/23/2015 1:11:38 PM)

Yup, and he's had his decent streak of offense already.
Earlier in the year when he was fresh, he was picking up rbis and moving people.
Once he starts getting banged up, that's over.
Pinto
Now

SoMnFan -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/23/2015 1:15:50 PM)

Uh-oh
Another contract we will try to squeeze to the max tho

This is why I always harp about Pohlads and TR
And yet people still defend them.
This is a different day. Owning a professional team in this day means you will be wasting a ton of money on contracts that simply don't work out.
You have to get over it and move on. You will be over-paying a part-time catcher. Get over it.
But we won't. They will squeeze every ounce they can out of that contract just like the other ones.
The good teams, the successful ones, have been writing off bad choices and contracts for decades.
Our skinflints just haven't given in yet.

Tim Cady -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/23/2015 10:21:29 PM)

I am excited to share here that the Yankees are calling up Jacob Lindgren. He is my friend and Mentor Mark Lindgren's grandson. Jacob grew up as a Twins fan(Father and grandfather from Minneapolis) and was even told by the Twins that they were interested in drafting him in the second round. He was projected to go between picks 17 and 40, Ah but The Yankees took him at pick 55 in the second round, their first overall pick. Boston and KC also told Jacob they would draft him with their later 1st round picks in 2014. No we will see who made the right choice. I am so thrilled for my friend. Proud grandpa taking a flight to New York in the morning in hopes of seeing Jacob's debut! Safe travels Mark!

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/23/2015 11:45:47 PM)

Awesome on Stewart.

Cady, congrats!

Saw the boys in Mobile tonight again (worked out with a work trip this weekend; amazing timing). Unfortunately I missed the first couple innings, but:

Berrios...was typical Berrios. Great life/pop on his pitches. Typical very solid self. Not much not to like when he's on the mound. Total confidence.
Reed got into some trouble, but still good life and movement on his pitches. Solid.
Kepler/Harrison/Walker/Polanco. Keepin' on keepin' on. Kepler continues to really impress.
Sano. Man, people have said it and it's so true; the ball just sounds different off his bat. His contact is just incredible and the backspin it generates. Was lacing balls in the yard today. Almost had a 2nd triple, was barely out at 3rd. He really does run well for a big man. Purely physically he really continues to remind me of a young Pujols a lot. Their batting stance, etc. is even similar. He'll never be the contact hitter Pujols is, but man, the bat is just special. If he can cut down on the K's "some" he's going to be one of the better pure offensive players in the game. Now the defense? Man it's ugly. Balls he should have gotten to that he didn't; bunts, etc. Great arm, but just terrible lapses in focus, etc. He was even making mistakes in between innings just throwing the ball around, etc. It gets tougher and tougher to see him staying at 3b. I want Plouffe there for sure the more I see of Sano there. See if Sano can make it at RF. Otherwise, you better make some adjustments for DH/1b. But the bat is special.

Save the best for last; Mr. Buxton. I can't say that much more than I already have. As Stacey has alluded to, Buxton won't be the next Trout. He'll be the first Byron Buxton. Just a special, special guy. Got his 13th steal tonight and 11th triple! The triple was a no-doubter. He stung a ball to the gap and you knew immediately it was a triple; there was no doubt. He also made several great catches defensively, one of which had a nasty tail to it almost to the batters eye in deep centerfield where he made a Willie Mays-esque catch. I'll say it again; he's the best pure talent I've ever seen on a baseball field, and I honestly say that with zero hyperbole. Doesn't mean he will turn out the best, etc., but his talent is just unreal. Can't wait to see him in Target Field. That day is coming very, very soon.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/24/2015 12:00:49 AM)

I guess I have to say SOMETHING negative; 3b. We still have no "future" 3b on this team. So I'd look at locking up Plouffe now.

Goodrum is really struggling at Ft. Myers this year and is now 23. OPS of .665. I thought he had a chance with his athleticism, etc. He could still get it, but it's not looking good.

Plouffe is going to turn 29 this season and is pretty well established now. He's one of the better 3b in the game. This core is going to really start coming on to contend in 2016 or so. Plouffe is set to be a FA in 2018. Save some money, extend him now, and make sure you have a 3b in place for this title-contending core for a few years through 2020 or so.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (5/24/2015 5:50:32 AM)

16 hits in Chattanooga's 11-3 win

I tried to get you in to talk about it yesterday ... Stacey made us aware of the call-up during the game.
Excited to see the kid.

I disagree. Why not just wait him out? He had at that one season where he was 3.9 wins above replacement but never has hit 2 wins above replacement in any other season. It wouldn't be hard to find a player with Plouffe's value to replace him. And like you say, he isn't a FA until 2018. What the heck is the rush to sign him now???
