Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/25/2016 8:09:50 PM)

Nick Senzel has a .959 OPS at Class A Dayton. Zack Collins has homered three times in nine games for Class A Advanced Winston-Salem. Zack Burdi is already at Double-A Birmingham. But the 2016 first-rounder who is arguably enjoying the most success this summer is 15th overall pick Alex Kirilloff.

The Twins prospect went 16-for-32 with two homers, seven RBIs and 10 runs scored over seven games with Rookie-level Elizabethton last week en route to Appalachian League Offensive Player of the Week honors and highlighting the Minor League list of winners for July 18-24.

The 18-year-old outfielder extended his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest active streak in the Appy League, with hits in each of his seven games. He collected multiple hits in five of those contests, including four straight from Thursday through Sunday. He also homered in back-to-back games Friday and Saturday against Johnson City. In all, his 16 hits last week were tied for most in the Minors with Tampa's Jeff Hendrix and West Michigan's Will Maddox.

Since he made his professional debut June 29, Kirilloff's 36 hits for the E-Twins are tied with DJ Peters and Cody Thomas (both of Ogden) for most among all hitters playing in Class A Short Season or Rookie-level leagues. His .383 average over 23 games ranks second in the Appy League, while his .574 slugging percentage and .958 OPS both place fifth.

Kirilloff was taken 15th overall last month out of Pittsburgh-area Plum High School, where he hit .540 as a senior, and signed for the slot value of $2.817 million two weeks later. MLB.com had ranked the 18-year-old as the Draft's No. 18 overall prospect, giving him slightly above-average 55 grades for his power and arm and 50's for his three other major tools.

"We really like his bat," Twins general manager Terry Ryan told MLB.com after Kirilloff signed. "He's got some pop in his bat. He's a professional-type hitter who takes solid at-bats. He can run, so he's a complete player. That's why he was picked 15th in the country."

Given his Draft status and the start to his professional career, Kirilloff is in the discussion -- along with Triple-A infielder Jorge Polanco -- to fill in behind 2015 fifth overall pick Nick Gordon as the Twins' second-best position player prospect when MLB.com updates its rankings this week.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/27/2016 3:47:50 PM)

baseball america guy, Ben Badler, chat today

What is the potnetial of Kohl Stewart?
Ben Badler: Looks like a back-end starter if everything clicks, and for a guy who doesn’t miss many bats and doesn’t project to have plus command, there’s risk in getting there.

Chih Wei Hu looked fantastic in the futures game and has kept it going in AA. Does he have the stuff to be a mid rotation starter in the future?
Ben Badler: He can be a No. 3-4 SP.

Is it time to start focusing more on prospect production rather than on "toolsy" guys who are athletic and can't hit a lick? Perfect example - Byron Buxton - ok minor league stats, but everyone loved the tools and rated him highly. He is now a 23 year old struggling big leager. Meanwhile guys like Story and Goldschmidt were never highly ranked overall - but all they did in the minors is rake... time to rethink the approach guys?
Ben Badler: Well, let’s at least start with accurate factual information. Buxton is a .305/.385/.500 career minor league hitter (and he’s 22, not 23). Anyone giving up on him right now is being foolish. Trevor Story was a Top 100 prospect who struggled in the Cal League in 2013 and then again when he got to Double-A the next year. Goldschmidt absolutely was underrated out of the draft and early in his minor league career, but by the time he got to Double-A he was very highly-regarded; I remember ranking him the No. 3 prospect in the Southern League that season and having people tell me I was too high on him.

TJSweens -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/28/2016 10:47:05 AM)

It's hard to believe that so many scouting reports considered Kohl Stewart to be the best pitcher in his draft. Is he just a disappointment or is this another case of the Twins drafting a good prospect and ironing the stuff out of him?

Probably the only good part about the Hartford stadium fiasco (which resulted in the Twins escaping from the bad RockCats/YardGoats owner) was that Colorado became the parent team in 2015. T.Story showed a lot of HR pop here last year, and he's good enough SS defensively. He's not just a Coors Field hitter and he's been hitting steadily all year. Next year look for Jordan Patterson (RF & 1B), a better hitter for average with good HR power who's doing well in AAA this year. --By the way, it's now official: YardGoats will play the entire 2016 home schedule on the road.
