Twins cut Buscher from 40-man roster Posted on November 3rd, 2009 – 11:57 AM
By Joe Christensen

The Twins have cut infielder Brian Buscher from their 40-man roster, outrighting him to Class AAA Rochester. He can become a minor-league free agent 16 days after the World Series.
Buscher, 28, batted .235 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 61 games for the Twins this season, posting a .360 on-base percentage and a .316 slugging percentage.

Thanks, Brian, for your contributions, but pardon me for a moment of exuberation at this development:

Phew, now that I got that out of my system...

Other guys expendable on the 40-man IMO:

Butera (don't need him when you have Ramos/Morales both on it). I'd guarantee there's no other organization with FIVE catchers currently on it.
Redmond (obviously that will come).
Gabino
Keppel
Pavano
Cabrera
Crede
Huber

To add: Boof/Slowey/Neshek

By my count, if all the above are done, that'd leave 6 open spots on the 40-man.

I guess this means we won't hear "We're happy with Tolbert and Buscher sharing time at third" this year

I'll give Bill Smith credit for this; he sure has cleaned a lot of fat in the form of "never-will-be's" from this organization in the last couple of years. It's just depressing how much more there is to be done (see post above).

Just once I would like to see us enter a season without an infield of Justin Morneau and a merry go round of 6 utility infielders.

DruBu won't be gone. They'll go with him to caddy for Ramos in AAA, or hold the job until he gets there.

Add Pridie to the list. Gabby has to go. SethSpeaks thinks there is a decent chance DJ Romero could be taken off.

It's pretty easy to see the flaws in this team by looking at 40-man rosters around baseball.

Only one team in baseball has more infielders on their 40-man than us, the Giants. We have 13, only 3 teams have more than 10.
And only one other team in baseball has 5-catchers on their 40-man, the Red Sox. And you have to figure that's about to change. Most teams don't have more than 3.

The sad thing is, Gardy would find a new worthless player to latch onto...like Matt Tolbert.  I rejoiced the day the Twins let LewLew go because they finally discarded Gardy's favorite worthless guy.  It didn't take long for Nick Punto to step into the role.  The question isn't will Gardy find some new pile of worthless shit to make his new favorite extra versatile scrapper, it's who will he decide is that player, and how long will we have to suffer through that guy batting sub .200 with mediocre baserunning and only halfway decent defense?

Yeah, but if it was down to Tolbert Gardy would be on his last worthless guy.

Tolleson, Plouffe, Machado are all waiting in line to move up that ladder.

Tommy Watkins could still come out of retirement for it.

Well, if the greatest baseball genius who ever lived -- Theo Epstein -- and runs the most astute baseball front office in history -- the Boston Red Sox -- has five catchers on the 40-man roster, that must make it okay, eh Dustin?

No, no, Pete.

And again, you and I both know that 2 of those guys will be off their 40-man in the next week or two.

I've just got a feeling that this team is the Twins:

Rays working on Iwamura deal

Just got back to New York and heard from an industry source who's not with the Rays that they are on the verge of completing a trade of 2B Akinori Iwamura.

The Rays were looking to do some kind of deal since they weren't planning to pick up the $4.85-million option to bring him back. What's interesting is that the source indicated the deal wasn't with the Cubs or the Dodgers as has been speculated on but to an unexpected team. Hmmm.

The Rays are operating under something of a deadline since they have until one day after the end of the World Series to either pick up the option or pay a $550,000 buyout and allow Iwamura to become a free agent. They have been working on essentially a sign-and-trade deal, where they would get something back for him. It would probably be too big of a gamble for them to pick up the option without having a deal in place.
Iwamura hit .281 in three seasons with the Rays after coming over from Japan, playing third in 2007 and second the last two seasons. He sustained what was considered a season-ending knee injury in May of this year, but made an unexpected recover and rejoined the team for the final month, playing 69 games total. He has a career .354 on-base percentage.
Iwamura, 30, indicated a preference to stay with the Rays, but they are talking about using either Ben Zobrist or Sean Rodriguez, or a combination of the two, at second next season.

It would explain why Buscher was cut from the 40-man now, and Iwamura just seems like a player the Twins would target.

They certainly have a better excuse than the Twins -- as in, they probably don't know who will catch next year. The Twins should have a pretty good idea.

Unless, of course, they're planning on trading Mauer.

Iwamura would be a great #2 hitter. The lineup would become even more LH-heavy: you could start out a lineup with Span/Iwamura/Mauer/Morneau/Kubel -- all LH hitters. The reason I don't think that's a problem is that Iwamura hits LHs better than RHs in his career: .305/.373/.412 vs. .270/.345/.384.

As has also been mentioned, he'd give you the ability to target either a 2B or a 3B on the FA market and let Iwamura take the other spot. Although I also agree that this would be the end, realistically, of the JJ Hardy ideas.
