I didn't watch more than a minute of Gopher hockey all weekend. By the time I checked the score on Friday we were already down by 3, so why bother. Pretty much the same thing yesterday.
If I were Mittelstadt I would sign after this season and develop in the AHL. The current coaching staff can't develop players for their life. Time for Lucia to retire, he's done and has been living on past successes for far too long. From here on out my favorite MN team is SCSU, go Huskies!

What a horrible weekend for the Gophers. How do you get outshot 61-15 in any game, much less one against a glorified club team?

Big crowds at Penn State though. Weird.

And now we get to go back there for the B10 playoffs, and worse yet, the B10 is going to charge people extra to watch it!
F*** that.

Big Ten apparently changed their minds. The games will now be televised on FOX Sports North and streamed on BTN2Go and FOX Sports Go.

Embarrassing effort by a once proud program. I admit I've only watched a few minutes all year, but is it time for Lucia to go? If not, what's the solution. I haven't been interested since they left the WCHA.

Yes! It's time for Lucia to go!
More than once this season I have planned on watching this team, but could only stomach a few minutes, so believe me when I say you haven't missed anything. I think the players interest left with the WCHA along with any effort. Sad, sad state of affairs for a once proud program.....

I'd like to thank Don for his service, but it's time for a new direction. Embarrassing to miss the NCAA's as the University of MN.

After 19 years, two national championships, 13 NCAA tournament appearances and a recent run of disappointing seasons, the Don Lucia Era of Gophers hockey will end.

The university will soon officially announce the move, and Lucia is expected to address the team later today, multiple reports indicated Tuesday, two days after the Gophers failed to advance to the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years.

Lucia had one year remaining on his contract, and he made $612,500 this season. It was unclear as of Tuesday afternoon whether the move was a firing or a resignation. If fired, Lucia would be in line to receive a $315,000 buyout from the U for the final year of his contract.

So now the question is, who do you guys want as his replacement?

I'd like to see Potulny come back, but if Motzko or Hastings have any interest I suspect either of them would get the job over him.
I don't think Guentzel will get his shot as the head man since he has been on Don's staff for so many years and this program needs a change.

If SCSU can come up with any sort of offer midway between his current salary and the one the U could offer, he should and will stay in St Cloud. The Gophers job is a nightmare situation.

What a bittersweet moment. Yes it's time to move on but I always loved "the Don". Finally took us back over the hump and I thought that was just the way it would be moving forward. Always in the mix to win it all. Can't know for sure 'why' but something shifted and when it did, it was downhill from there.

I've heard people talk about how he brought in Non-MN's and that was the downfall. I say to heck with that. We won again because of those guys.

What an awful decision by the U to join the B10. Just a sad situation all around.

This was long over due. "The Don" was never the same coach after he cut off his mullet.

IMO that is one of the biggest reasons the program stinks.

I read an article when it was first announced that they 'could' fight it but had no chance to win.

Hockey was so important to MN. Important enough, IMO, that if it meant staying in the WCHA, we should have threatened to leave the Big 10 for the Big 12. If the Big 10 didn't like that idea, they would have to go on with their little hockey league without the Gophers.

Actually, that's a card that still could be played. Either the Big 10 allows the Gophers back into the WCHA or into the NCHC....or we take all our sports to the Big 12, where there is no hockey conference to hold us down.

It would be pretty sweet if the Gophers and maybe the Badgers ditched the Big 10 over this. Join the WCHA. Force a merger with the NCHC and the WCHA for a super-conference. Or just join the NCHC, I guess. I'll miss Bemidji and Mankato not being in the same conference as the Gophers. But I know where the WCHA stands now. The Gophers belong with Denver, CC, SCSU, Duluth and UND.

The Big Ten would tell us not to let the door hit us in the ass on the way out. And the Gophers would lose out on all the revenue generated by the Big Ten network.

Your stance is great if you're content with the hockey program never returning to elite status.

If your theory is correct, then you want to return the hockey program to elite status at the expense of all the other sports. I also don't believe being in the Big Ten and elite status are mutually exclusive options. Gopher hockey was declining before they were forced to move to the Big Ten.

Not according to Lou Nanne who knows a thing or two about hockey, the U of M, Gopher sports ...

He makes the point that this will be a much coveted job that a lot of really top coaches may seriously look at.
