As gigantic and talented as Minnesota hockey is, we do have a bit of a hamstring because our talent is stretched between so many good schools here. In Wisconsin, for example, all of the good hockey players play for the Badgers. In North Dakota, they all go to the U. of North Dakota. Most other states have that one top-line powerhouse program that always attracts the cream of the crop. Maybe two for some states.

And I guess it was pretty much like that here for many decades.

I'm going to say now, to pre-empt the obvious criticism that will come my way - I'm not saying that it's bad that Minnesota kids have so many good options for colleges that have great programs. I'm just saying that the result is that our talent pool gets spread out between the U of M, Duluth, Bemidji, Mankato, St. Cloud ... I'm probably forgetting some schools... and it makes it harder to hold dominance in the sport the way we'd love to, year after year.

Yep, I'm whining a bit. I may be a bit too caught up in my wish for a feel-good win in honor of Motzko's son because I've seen other programs, other teams, other coaches, other players get that kind of moment. Heck, we saw referees hand over an NFCCG to New Orleans because of Katrina. I'm whining because I thought this might have been our turn.

I read some where that of the teams left in the FF there were 33 players from Minnesota! That is a lot of talent from our state on 4 teams.
The Gophers pretty much did what I expected last night. They got beat badly by a bigger, stronger, more mature hockey team. Until we start getting some older 4 year players on our team we will struggle with teams like Mankato. That team is loaded with good 22-25 year old players and they have no problem beating up on 19-20 year old college players.
Looking back at the last few national championship teams, I would say the trend is teams with older players are taking the title and teams like the Gophers and Michigan are losing out with their younger rosters.

Now the real question on my mind is.....
Who will win the Ben Meyers sweep stakes and land him as a free agent? I sure hope Guerin has a nice offer out to him already.

To your point Frank.

Our problems with Woog and later years Lucia is that they recruited high end scorers or guys that were lightning quick. It wasn't until they got guys like Pohl and Poultony to do some of the more dirty work. Those guys had offense but they didn't shy away from getting dirty. We got as far as we did because we unearthed a guy like Myers. Same mold. The flashy "stars" like Okpozo tend to leave early. Vanek was a rare exception.

I like what Bob is doing with his recruiting of guys that are willing to play a couple of years in the USHL or some other league instead jumping right from high school. That is what Meyers did and he even followed Bob to Minnesota instead of sticking with St Cloud. Very few of the true freshman are able to play against the older guys, with Knies being our one exception. That dude plays a lot older than his 19 years for sure. I think the Gophers are on their way back up with some top end talent still wanting to come here, but more of the gritty guys to go with them.

Gophers got a sweep over D1 first timers Lindenwood this weekend, but it wasn't as easy as one would have expected with their #2 ranking.
Saturday night they were dominant, but a little too cute for my taste. On Sunday night they played over confidant and it almost burned them in a 6-4 win.
This weekend they will find things a lot tougher against the Mavs in a home and home series.
Lots of high end talent on this years team, but they are very young and will take a physical beating by the much older Mavs. Will be a good measuring stick early to see where they stand against the best.

I'm sorry to say the Mavs will dominate the Gophers this early in the season.

Gophers win Friday night 4-1 with Snuggerud notching a hat trick. And sorry to say, but the Mavs dominated the first 10 minutes of the game and after that it was pretty much all Gophers. Held the Mavs to something like 17 shots and 6 of them were in the first 10 minutes. Tomorrow should be another fun one in Mankato.

Mavs win it tonight 3-2. A good game for this early in the year, and a split is about right for these teams. If they meet again later in the year it will be more of the same I'm sure.

Gophers vs UND was one heck of a game last night in a full house for a change. Gophers managed to pull out an OT win 3-2 with Knies getting the winner on the first shift of OT. Should be a fun rematch tonight too. It was nice being able to watch large portions of the Huskies vs Mavs on a different channel between periods with their game starting a half hour later than ours. St Cloud took the win in that game.

Tonight the games are Huskies vs Mavs starting at 6 PM and Gophers vs Hawks at 7 PM. Looks like another night of channel jumping.

UND got the OT win last night 5-4 in a real crazy game with lots or twists and turns to go along with some real bad officiating going both ways. All in all a real fun weekend of hockey though.....almost like the old days.

Gophers fall flat at Ohio State last night and lose 6-4 after an emotional weekend last week against UND. Now they need to find some energy today to get at least a split out of the weekend. I wasn't able to watch last night, but from all accounts I have seen they looked flat and Close was not good in goal at all. Hoping for a rebound today.

I just checked todays score and it's 4-1 Gophers with a little over 4 minutes left in the game. That sounds more like it....
We need to get at least the split on the road.

4-2 final giving the Gophers the split.

Gophers pretty much dominated the Irish from the get go last night in a 4-1 win. Close just missed the shutout by a minute while the Gophers put over 50 shots on goal. A complete game against a team that usually plays them tight. Looking for a sweep tonight.

Gophers get the sweep and this time Close got his shutout in the 3-0 win Saturday night. A tighter game than Friday, but the Gophers still pretty much controlled the play throughout with two goals in the 2nd and the 3rd an ENG at the end. A good weekend of solid hockey as the young guys on the team get used to playing bigger and stronger college players and keep getting better. This could be a real good team by the end of the season as long as they keep working hard and playing the way they did this weekend.
