Realistically:

I just don't see a 2B fit. I'd love Hudson or Polanco, but they are Type A guys. Lopez will be more expensive than we can afford...someone will overpay and he's been inconsistent. DeRosa might be the guy we go after, but I am not overly fond of his defense at 2B. With all the comments from BS, it looks like Punto will be the 2B next year.

At 3B, I am hoping for Figgins. He'd look great as our #2 hitter and has the speed Gardy likes. If we have to go with Punto at 2B I am hoping for a big ticket 3B. Figgins is 32, but he plays Twins baseball (whatever that is), is a good defender, and runs the bases exceptionally well. Beltre is the other guy I'd take a flier on. Great defense and I think he still could surprise on offense.

SP: We need a #1-3 starter. If BS doesn't see that then it's the bullpen fiasco from '09 all over again. Most likely he'll try to run Perkins out there again or re-sign Pavano. That's not going to work.

Baker, Slowey, XXXX, Blackburn, Duensing....That could work depending on the XXXX.

Lackey is not an option. Randy Wolf won't sign here either. I'd like Harden or Bedard (or Sheets if he is healthy) to be THAT guy. If they don't get them, I'd say get two of the people remaining on that list. I wouldn't mind Duchscherer AND Pavano for instance. Or Washburn AND Duchscherer.

Dang, again BS is SOOOO close to getting this right. Hopefully he can do what it takes to improve the team while signing Mauer as well :)

Ya, possible on Polanco/Hudson, but keep in mind that both could be non-tendered this offseason.

He still could make some sense as a RH bat off the bench I suppose. .903 against lefties last year. But I think at this point, I'd like to see what Dustin Martin can do in that role. Unless Church is available at a discount and willing to come off the bench. He'd be ideal for me. Offers insurance for injury or Delmon not panning out, and can play CF.

I was thinking of the wromg Johnson, it was Kelly Johnson the 2B that you really wanted

Ya. I mentioned him in the "trade candidates" one. He might be my top 2b option if they can find a match. Probably would have to give up bullpen arms or an OF prospect.

Not good news for us:

Phillies Decline Option On Pedro Feliz
By Zach Links [November 8 at 5:31pm CST]
Scott Lauber of Wilmington News Journal reports that the Phillies have decided not to pick up Pedro Feliz's $5.5MM option. While it remains possible for Feliz to return to the club, Lauber writes that it is unlikely.

In 625 plate appearances this past season, Feliz turned in a slash line of .266/.308/.386, which meant an OPS of .694 - his worst since 2002. Feliz's calling card is his defensive play at third but his UZR/150 of 5.0 - while still above average - was his worst posting since the stat was first monitored in 2002.

With a number of options available on the free-agent market and the trading block, who should the Phillies get to play third base?

That's just one more suitor for the "good" 3b. And to me there's really only 3 out there; DeRosa/Beltre/Figgins. Unless I'm forgetting someone.

I think it's more and more likely that the best 3b will be priced out for us, and as such I'd rather spend money on SP and a 2b. Let Harris/ take 3b duties until Valencia is ready and they can't deny him any longer. Unless Crede is willing to come back on a cheap deal again.

From Dierkes top 50 FA's predictions:

9. Adrian Beltre - Twins. The Twins made a large upgrade at shortstop by acquiring J.J. Hardy. Beltre would give them fantastic left-side infield defense and another possible 20 home run bat. The Twins had interest in trading for Beltre a year ago, though the Scott Boras client added them to his no-trade clause.

I'd be pretty happy with Beltre. Even if we have to suffer with Punto at second, that would give us a substantially improved infield defense -- and it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect 40 dingers out of the left side.

Royals Seeking A Catcher
By Mike Axisa [November 9 at 8:25am CST]
After declining their 2010 option for Miguel Olivo, the Royals are searching for a catcher according to Bob Dutton of The KC Star. Dutton mentions that it would be best for the team to fill their hole behind the plate prior to December 12th, allowing them to non-tender the incumbent John Buck.

“We led all of baseball (last season) in passed balls and wild pitches,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “That will be fixed in 2010. Our defense in general is our main objective to fix before next season.

“And it starts behind the plate.”

The team has indicated that they aren't ready to hand the starting job over to Brayan Pena, even though he made "significant defensive strides last season."

Dutton mentions one interesting rumor to watch, a "deal sending second baseman Alberto Callaspo to the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher A.J. Ellis." Callaspo, who hit .300/.356/.457 in 2009, would help fill the Dodgers' second base vacancy, while the 28-year-old Ellis would give KC a defensive standout behind the plate. Ellis also has a career .398 OBP in the minors, with more walks than strikeouts in nearly 1,800 plate appearances.

Even though there are plenty of catching options in free agency, Moore acknowledged that his team prefers to improve their club through trades.

“Our free-agent pursuit will not be as aggressive as in the past,” he said. “We’re going to focus on trades first. We’re going to exhaust every opportunity to make trades.

“In the previous two offseasons, we’ve been more likely to pop a free agent or two early on. I look for us to exhaust every possible trade scenario this offseason before we enter into the free-agent market.”

Tim previewed the trade market for catchers back in October. See any fits?

Umm, can the Twins make a play for Callaspo please? It probably won't happen because of Callaspo's personal issues in the past and the fact that it's in-division. But man would it make some sense.

An infield of Beltre/Hardy/Punto/Morneau would probably be the best defensively in the game. That would be absolutely killer. You might even be able to try to shop Danny Valencia for pitching -- maybe in a deal for Josh Johnson? I'm sure the Marlins don't want to see Emilio Bonifacio manning the hot corner again next year.

That's true. Though you probably don't want to count on Beltre for more than a season or two. So you'd have to have a backup 3b plan.

Have you thought about what it would take for Johnson, Pete? I've been trying to work on that myself, and I'm not sure what we'd need to package. Maybe something like Revere/Guerra/Valencia/Swarzak?

Beltre at third would be very nice.

I don't see any moves for Callaspo, due to the glut of middling middle infielders.

And I could see them freeing up some room by dealing Valencia, if they could get Josh Johnson. That would be sweet.

BTW, Billy Smith did say a veteran pitcher or 2 could be on the off-season list:

Then Smith might have tipped his hand.
"We'll see what's out there," he said. "And if there's a veteran starter or two that's a good fit for us, then we'll proceed accordingly."
A starter, or two? Yes, there are indications the Twins will not hesitate to add two veteran starting pitchers this offseason, allowing Duensing, Liriano, Swarzak, Glen Perkins and Jeff Manship to provide the depth teams always seem to need.

What worries me is that unless we're going to go above $95M or so, we probably only have about $10M left to spend (pending Mauer's extension). If we're getting a good INF (2b or 3b) then that only leaves $4-6M for SP. If that's the case, I'd rather have 1 with potential than 2 bums.

In those predictions on FA from mlbtraderumors:

41.  Mark DeRosa - Phillies.  I debated flipping the DeRosa-Beltre predictions, as both the Phillies and Twins have a need at third base.  DeRosa, a former Penn quarterback, has been linked to the Phils for years.

I'd take DeRosa over Beltre, personally. Because he can play 2b. So then when Valencia's ready, your lineup has no holes.

Span CF
DeRosa 3b/2B
Mauer C
Morneau 1B
Cuddyer RF
Kubel DH
Young LF
Hardy SS
Valencia 3B

That'd work

W/Beltre:

Span
Hardy
Mauer
Morneau
Cuddyer
Kubel
Beltre
Young
Punto
