Nope, I was wrong. There are more Ponderosas.

St. Cloud has one of the last Bonanzas according to the Bonanza website. I coulda swore that place was closed last time I drove by.

There was a Royal Fork Buffet at Columbia Mall in Grand Forks that used to be always packed when I was a kid. Then I went back there maybe 15 years ago and it was depressing as hell. It was finally put out of its misery....not sure when.

Happy Chef in Rogers was always our place to eat as we approached the Twin Cities when I was a kid, and also a place we would have our last breakfast before we headed back home. I remember pushing that button on the statue and he'd say something you couldn't really understand. As I was looking some of this stuff up yesterday, I noticed there is only one Happy Chef left - the original one in Mankato. Apparently they have a giant chef statue too, but the speaker had been broken for decades. They recently fixed the speaker, so now kids can push the button and listen to the statue say crazy stuff. I've never been to Mankato in my life. That's kind of a weird fact. It has to be the only town over 10,000 people in the state that I've never been to at least one time.

that is extremely weird

We had a happy Chef for years
was the after-bar place to gather

Poor Big Chef had dozens of arrows stuck into him in all places by the end.
Always felt bad for him, after checking every night "yup, theres another one..."

Sorry for the delay....the vast distance difference is like sending a signal from the earth to Mars.

Think the people tonight in Rochester can understand that?

I doubt it.

Happy Chefs were open all-night?

I remember noticing a lot of weird places in Marshall, now that you mention it. I think Happy Chef might still be open as FOOD or something in Marshall.

Mikes café, a "downtown" Marshall staple for a hundred years, moved out into the happy Chef building once that franchise left
its the only place left in town where you can get the old fashioned "beef commercial" type meals
Everyone goes there at least once a year for memories sake
And they have a huge farmer clientele that goes there every morning.
Happy Chef always did well with the college crowd, its right next to campus

Actually had to go into the kitchen at Mikes last year, and show the young cook how to make a tuna melt.
there may or may not have been liquor involved

On the other hand, you have a Perkins in Marshall. So what else do you really need?

You should dress up as Hop Sing for Halloween, unless Matt is going to.

I love hot beef sandwiches at dives like that. It wasn't until about 5 years ago the name "commercial" came to my attention. I was like, "what's that???" There's some sort of line between St Cloud and Willmar. It's hot beef sandwich in St. Cloud, and to the north, northwest and east. To the west of St. Cloud, it's commercial. There's this dive restaurant in "Sunray," just north of Willmar, it's in a gas station and it closes at 2:00 every day....they have the best commercial beef I've found. I make sure to go there at least once per cabin season.

Too many choices. Can never make up my mind. I'm usually mildly disappointed, but not upset. I think their omelettes are getting smaller.
