The Wolves would have limited options for upgrading the frontcourt. They will no longer create a $33 million trade exception and lose access to all trade exceptions created last season, including the $10.8 million one. They also lose the $5.5 million bi-annual exception and get the reduced $6 million taxpayer mid-level exception instead of the $15.5 million one. They are highly unlikely to get a starter with that amount.

Their best path to acquiring a new starting-level forward is through trade. Green’s $14.7 million and Donte DiVincenzo’s $12.5 million salaries can be traded for players earning up to those amounts or less. If the Wolves acquire Green, they would be unable to aggregate his salary for a more expensive player. This means their options could be limited to players like Naji Marshall, Jalen Smith, Royce O’Neale, Obi Toppin, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Grant Williams, who would’ve made sense for the Wolves to be included in the deal.

They could get a more expensive forward if they expand the trade further. That would mean the Hornets reroute Green to another team, while the Wolves include DiVincenzo. This would put them in play to acquire more expensive options like P.J. Washington, Keldon Johnson, Kyle Kuzma, Santi Aldama, and Cameron Johnson.

More expensive does not equal better.

Yesterday, I was thinking it was likely Gobert would be traded this off-season. Now, I think with the addition of Ball, I think you kinda need to keep Gobert to cover for perimeter defensive lapses.

Rudy is going to feast. We finally have a player that can throw the one pass he excels at catching - the lob.

Is the lob pass that difficult that nobody can do it effectively on this BB team?

Accurately and on time, yes?

Rudy does not leave a lot of margin for error.

I was going to say, a lob pass is one thing. A lob pass Rudy can handle is another.

Well this thread blew up.

I’m as big of a Naz fan as any. But this trade makes the Wolves better. Naz can be great but often in a limited way. More than anything the offense needed a shakeup. It could get stale at times last year. Ball provides that. We now possess the best offensive starting backcourt in the NBA. Want to double Ant? Good luck with that.

As for Randle, I like him. I always liked him, even with his faults and even when he struggled when he first got here. Patience. He was playing very well by season’s end. Last season didn’t click, at least not consistently. See above comment on offensive shakeup needed. So I have no problem moving from him. But I still wish him well.

So now waiting for move 3? They are short on bigs. Another move has to be coming, or else this is a huge vote of confidence in Beringer, which I doubt considering Finch’s reluctance to play the kids.

The Wolves are better if Ball can stay healthy. He's missed whole lot of games in his young career.

I like the idea of flipping Green, because he's a rotational player on an expiring deal, so he should still have some value.

What's the infatuation with keeping Dante? Don't get me wrong, I like him and his play. But his deal is also expiring and it's unlikely given his injury, that he will be able to contribute during the upcoming season. He's had a bargain deal, which made him valuable before. But what's the point of retaining him given Ayo and the glut of guards on the team now?

What I really liked about Skor North/Doogie Wolfson coverage of these moves:

The Wolves went big to counter Denver and it worked for 2-3 years but there isn't any moves to get bigger than SA and OKC. So the move was to get smaller, handle the ball better. and zig or zag a different way.

Rumor is the PF type they would like is in the PJ Washington mold except he is too expensive. So Royce O'Neal, Obi Topin, or a guy that Britt Robson loves....Santi Aldama (7 foot PF) from Memphis. Memphis currently has about 8 PF so they will have to move someone after drafting Boozer and trading for Stewart and Grant.

He's more of a point forward but has played a lot at guard too.

He's not going to go to Minnesota.

Rumors are they are in the mix of about 3-4 teams talking to him.

Physically, yes.

He would actually be a tremendous fit on the Wolves.

But I think Miami makes more sense for him.

He doesn't have much left.....basically a coach on the bench.

Because he's been an important member of the Wolves for 4 years, so him leaving is relevant news.

Wolves wanted him back, but he believes he can play a bigger role than what we'd have for him. He also wants to play in a big city for the 1st time before he retires.

Not sure how big of a role he would have played in Minnesota. But I suspect Mike Conley on a vet minimum contract is probably a pretty valuable asset for teams wanting competent play and a savvy presence while not getting into the second apron.
