Finally something worth creating the new thread for this season.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota Wild President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Kirill Kaprizov to an eight-year, $136 million contract extension ($17 million average annual value) that begins in the 2026-27 season and goes through the 2033-34 season.

I get why they did it but that's too much money for him and frankly, too many years.

He has $1 million salaries in each of the 8 years.

Game wasn't on Paramount for some reason last night so I didn't get to watch but I saw the highlights this morning. If you have a minute check out Boldy's goal

Would that be 2nd on the Twins Payroll? Wild actually spend to the cap while the Twins don't even hit the median.....$165 million.

Nothing shady about it. Teams are free to structure deals to accommodate their cash flows. The teams also face stiff penalties for cutting that player or having that player retire early. The accumulated remaining cap hit will be applied to the year following the player’s departure.

It's only a steep price for the first year or two, in terms of percentage of cap. The cap gets re-calculated every year based on profits, and the NHL seems to be on the upswing. If the trend continues, this 'record' contract will look like a very reasonable deal before long.

Of course there is always risk in any long term deal. A lot can happen. But all things considered it's worth the risk to get the most talented player in franchise history locked up

Rand did a breakdown of the contract and said the same thing about % of the cap. By 2027 Kaprizov’s contract will be less than 15% of the salary cap.

The Parise and Suter deals paid very good players like they were elite players. They also came a time when the salary cap was flat for a long period. Then the NHL changed the rules to change those later low cost years into a poison pill and made it retroactive.

Kaprizov pays an elite player elite money during a time of significant cap growth. You can argue he is being paid like McDavid, but I think McDavid will get an even bigger deal. When this group of contracts is done, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few deals bigger than Kaprizov’s.

Man, I'm trying to wrap my head around the Gus extension. He's played really great at times but also has had some blah moments. 5 year extension means it's good that we don't have to worry about the position if he continues to be solid but now what do we do with JW?

I would have preferred to keep him as he backup with some sort of rotation. Lets see how they both play and make the Gus extension a decision going in to next year. I'm afraid we just lost a lot of leverage over JW's future. If they try and move him (lets say at the deadline) they just lost value. Teams know he's not playing anytime soon for us.

On a positive note, the Wild claimed Daemon Hunt on waivers and cut Jack Johnson. My feelings are not so much...great we got Hunt back as they ...thank God, we got rid of Johnson.

I don't think Gus is worth the contract, but I don't see it having any affect on what we do with Wallstedt. JW is just 22 at a position where most guys don't come into their own until their mid 20's. I'm sure the plan is Jesper's role will increase and Gus' will decrease over the next few years.

Is Gus one of the top goaltenders in the league? I'm listening to Falness interview John Hynes, and Hynes just said Gus is one of the top goaltenders. Sounds sus to me.

IMO, for what it's worth, Gus is a very good, not elite, goalie.

I don't mind the contract....both will get PT and if one turns into an elite one; trade the other. In history our supposed backup has ended up being the better goalie....

Gus' prior problem is that he always showed up at TC somewhat out of shape and it would take him until mid Nov - early Dec to hit his stride. He came in much better last year and it showed.

Worst gimmick since the glowing puck.

The key to the season is Kaprizov, Boldy, Ek, Rossi, Gus and Faber staying healthy. The rest are either old, unproven or hard working ham and eggers and not hard to replace.

Gus with a shut out
1st line: Kaprizov 3 assists, Boldy 1 goal and 2 assists, Rossi 1 goal 1 assist

Hartman with 2 goals

Ek with a goal

Our centers also took 56% of the face offs.

Sturm out and JEE had a terrible night at the dots. Bodes well. What doesn't? Liam O on the 4th and not a single shot on net. He may have to be moved because you can't send him back down. His confidence has to be shot. I'm not giving up since it's just 1 game but it's something to watch.
