Nick Kyrgios' next US Open opponent has blasted the tournament chair umpire whose pep talk spurred the Aussie tennis star to victory and says he won't tolerate a repeat when the pair face off.

World number two Roger Federer joined a chorus of past and modern tennis greats who have slammed the extraordinary mid-match pep talk that fired Kyrgios into a US Open third-round blockbuster against him in New York on Saturday for a spot in the final 16.

Swedish official Mohamed Lahyani is under fire for his unprecedented intervention, after Kyrgios pulled off a drama-charged comeback win over Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert at Flushing Meadows.

'It's not the umpire's role to go down from the chair,' Federer said after his own second round win.

I kind of like Andy Roddick's view on it:

'Layhani is a good man who genuinely cares about people. I really like him as a human..... he did something he shouldn't have,' Roddick wrote on Twitter.

'This is behavior we should see more of these days. Unfortunately it was the wrong time/place for it. Selfishly I hope they go easy on him.'

This is the first time, I think, that I've ever watched a Del Potro match. Doesn't look like he has the patience required to outlast Djokovic.

Del Potro playing smarter now. Has taken control.

Djokovic wins a 20-minute game, possibly saving his chances. Let's see how this plays out!

Djokovic wins the tie-breaker in an epic 2nd set! 2-0 Djokovic. You'd think that's gonna do it. I haven't seen men's tennis this compelling since the early 90s!

No comments on the Serena debacle at the Open?
Lots of angst yesterday on talk-sports-TV.
Pretty clear-cut sides being taken.
An icon trying to defend herself, or a spoiled brat who had a meltdown?
Feel bad for the winner, who is caught directly in the fallout.
Another Tiger Woods-type mess.

JMO but spoiled brat. I was on the fence until she turned it in to a "women's movement" issue after the initial outburst. During the tirade it was about her being cheated. She then turned the script to 'hopefully I'll take this on the chin but future women won't have to because of me'. It all seemed very fake and convenient.

If she were so gracious and powerful for future women, she would have never taken that moment away from Osaka. After she got her moment, then take it to the streets. Not during and certainly not directly after and during the trophy presentation.

Thanks for the input Jeff
Was glad Frank Isola was around yesterday, that's the take he was pushing, too.
Most others thought she was right in behaving like she did.
Very poor timing on her part, and I know mentioning all the things she has going on lately will be considered heartless and sexist, but that's not what I mean by it.
She's at a point where she could be incredibly helpful and positive, and she chose instead to go the opposite direction, hurting a rising star in the process.
I guess they all melt down at some point, here's hoping that's all this was.

It's not the first time with her too. I took that in to my thinking. Her defense is/was "men get away with why can't women?". And, while there's most likely truth to that statement, it's way too easy of an excuse. Especially where we are at right now as a country. Be bigger. You are the most dominant athlete of your generation.

I'm not a BBall guy by any means and got so tired of all the Lebron love over the years. That being said, I respect the heck out of that guy and how he acts.

It was also bad, IMO, where she went on and on letting the whole audience know "i'm not a cheater, I've never cheated"...all the while basically crying for sympathy. Then her coach confessed..'we were cheating'.

After that? "Everyone does it, especially men"
