Is Connelly the guy who makes the right moves around KAT and Edwards to make the Wolves a serious contender? His history at Denver is quite a mixed bag. He made some great moves and some real bonehead moves.

Is KAT really worth a super max deal that will take up 35% of the payroll?

Who will we draft? Will Connelly use the extra picks to move up? Should he? What kinds of players could fall to 14 and 19?

I’m more than willing to move on from KAT if he can find a way to do it and get adequate value in return.

I know it throws a wrench into ‘chemistry’ again. But two things with that. Finch seems better able to roll with changes and still find workable solutions. And I wonder how much of this team’s supposed close knit character is attributable to Towns vs. people just tolerating Towns.

I’ve gone back and forth on Towns so many times I’ve lost track. For the last half or of the regular season, he was a top player in the NBA. No question. Everything was clicking with him and the team.

Then came the playoffs and I got so fed up with him. He still doesn’t get it. And more dangerous, I suspect just from the things you see and hear that he’s becoming more bull headed and unwilling to accept constructive criticism.

He thinks he knows it all. But one thing he doesn’t know is how to adapt when a good team specifically game plans for him.

KAT may be the most aggravating player in Wolves history. His talent and the player he can be is constantly on display until he becomes unhinged at the wort possible moment. If people want to move on, I get it. At the same time, the Wolves better get a treasure trove in return if they decide to move him. Players like Towns tend to seem replaceable until you actually try to replace them.

Trade Russell!

Easier said than done. There has to be a market for him. I’m not sure there is. Maybe there’s a team out there who decides Russell is just what they need. If so, great. But I doubt there is.

I’m going to take a probably minority view on Russell. I’d prefer keeping him around another year. Yes he disappeared in the playoffs. And yes some of that was his own fault. But some of it was scheme. He just wasn’t a featured part of the offense. He wasn’t getting the touches, at the expense of a perplexed Towns butting his head repeatedly into the chest of double and triple teams.

Yes Russell had some just plain bad shots too. But he always has a few of those. But when he’s more a part of the offense he gets a chance to make up for them. When he’s not, they stand out.

I thought Russell made real progress this season. He went from a player I was relieved when he was injured or taken out of games, to a stabilizing presence on the court who I was glad to have out there. He accepted his role and limitations better. He realized his place on this team is not to play hero ball.

At the beginning of the year, I said Finch’s number one task will be to get something positive out of D’lo. Which seemed like an impossible task. But I think he accomplished it. He’s still probably not worth his salary, but he was not a total negative any more.

If there’s suitor for him, fine, move on. But otherwise he’s here. Let him continue the process.

Yes I get frustrated with him also. Very talented but not that bright, Ant says he's Jesus Kat really think he is Jesus. He likes to play head games with other players often losing and looking like a fool. When he gets flustered instead of creating he makes terrible decisions. He makes fancy passes and more than half of them are picked off. I think the refs don't always give him calls because he annoys the hell out of them. It's seems people in the league and media have kind of hinted he should just shut his yapper and play but I don't think he gets it.
But... he is very very talented and gifted so I root for him to continue to mature and see the bigger picture of just winning games. I think if possible the sooner ANT could take control of the team the better for Kat, knowing being king + professor + savior is not his role, playing tough basketball will earn him more respect. His childish act during this season wore on the fans and refs if feel. I hope someone can get through to him.

I admire how Jokic plays. uneventful, tough, and incredibly efficient and productive.

The question is can you win in the playoffs with Towns? I think he gave us that answer in the Memphis series. There have been a plethora of extremely talented players that simply couldn't get out of their own way. Towns is encroaching that list.

I'd explore a Towns trade and see what it could net. In hind sight we probably should have kept Butler and built a team around him.

I'm open to trade anyone but Ant for the right value, maybe same for McDaniels, but I'd trade him for the right value as well. Towns should be seeing a shrink everyday this summer to help him figure out the mental side of the game. He's physically talented but a mental/emotional midget. Get that fixed and I could do the super max. Don't fix it and you're burning $$$$ long term. D-Lo should go if a suitor could be found. Expiring contract is the best thing he brings to a trade partner, or us if we keep him.

I'd deal 2 of the 3 2nd rounders to improve our draft picks or as sweeteners in other trades.

Interesting. Willis is probably mid to low 2nd round at best. But I’m homerish enough to say sure at that price why not? There is some potential there. If he keeps honing his 3 point shooting and shows he can be proficient from NBA range, can always use that on your bench.

I was surprised how effective Manke was for UNC in the final four....he rebounded, defended well, and could shoot.

Adrian Wojnarowski@wojespn
ESPN Sources: Orlando Magic executive Matt Lloyd is finalizing a deal to become the Senior VP of Basketball Operations with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Lloyd’s the first significant hire under Tim Connelly since he left Denver to become President of Basketball Operations.

Jon Krawczynski@JonKrawczynski
The addition of Matt Lloyd (@wojespn reporting) is an important one for the Wolves. Lloyd oversaw scouting for the Magic, so will be a big voice in the draft prep that is in full swing. Sachin Gupta, as has been said for a while, remains a big part of the Wolves vision.

Orlando Magic Daily@OMagicDaily
Would be a big loss for the #Magic.

Matt Lloyd was one of the few who remained from Rob Hennigan’s staff and has been in charge of the #Magic’s draft preparations and scouting under Jeff Weltman.

Great opportunity for Matt. He has been in line for a big job for a while.

Lloyd — like Connelly — has a deep background in scouting and, according to Wojnarowski, is well-regarded for his “relationships with teams and agents in deal-making.”

There is no word on whether or not Lloyd will rank higher than current Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Sachin Gupta, who is also highly thought of for his deal-making skills — but more so from an analytical and CBA perspective. But, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic reported shortly after the news broke that Gupta “remains a big part of the Wolves’ vision.”

Krawczynski also added that Lloyd oversaw scouting (including professional, college and international departments) for the Magic, who made two selections in the top 10 last season — Minnesota’s own and Gonzaga star Jalen Suggs, and Michigan forward Franz Wagner — both of whom have proven to be excellent selections one year later.

Orlando has also drafted in recent years dynamic point guard Cole Anthony, versatile forward Chuma Okeke and center Mo Bamba. Other key draftees during Lloyd’s tenure include Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Jonathan Isaac. The biggest miss is certainly Mario Hezonja, whom the Magic selected fifth overall in 2015.

Lloyd has been with the Magic since 2012, when he was hired as an Assistant General Manager, a position he held until his promotion to VP of Basketball Operations last summer. During his tenure, he has also been responsible for overseeing and compiling the team’s statistical analysis of both pro and amateur players, which makes his fit alongside Gupta an interesting one.

Not appearing that way. Seems they just hired his replacement unless they sport multiple VP's.

Like most companies, they do.

Gupta: Executive Vice President.
Lloyd: Senior Vice President.

Tim Connelly on the NBA Draft, his Timberwolves front-office staff and more

Excerpts:

He hired former Orlando Magic executive Matt Lloyd last week to join his staff as a senior vice president and is continuing to make additions. League sources say the Wolves agreed to terms on Thursday with Dell Demps, who spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz and previously served as GM of the New Orleans Pelicans/Hornets from 2010-19, to add him to Connelly’s staff. Connelly served as an assistant GM under Demps in New Orleans for three years before he was hired to run the Nuggets.

-----------

Demps will work closely with Connelly, Lloyd, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Sachin Gupta and assistant GMs Joe Branch and Manny Rohan, the last three of whom are holdovers from the previous regime.

-----------

In hiring Lloyd, Connelly went after an executive he has known for years. Lloyd’s scouting background is of particular value for Connelly, as is a collaborative personality that Connelly believes will help Lloyd mesh quickly with a staff that was largely hired before either of them arrived.

“He’s a very well-thought-of guy. He’s got an unbelievable Rolodex in this league,” Connelly said. “He’s connected and he’s about the right things. He’s excited for the new challenge, and we’re really lucky to have him.”

-----------

The question has often been raised about where all of this leaves Gupta, the well-thought-of executive who stabilized the Wolves’ front office after Gersson Rosas was abruptly fired days before training camp. Gupta remains the team’s EVP, and Connelly said he will continue to play a big role in the team’s decision-making apparatus going forward.

“Sachin is a huge, huge voice and a huge part of everything we’re doing,” Connelly said. “He’s been fantastic through this transition period. It’s been fun to get to know him. Sach is one of the brightest guys in our league. You won’t find a guy more creative strategically. We’re going to have a room of voices and Sachin’s will be as loud as anybody.”

Loud is a relative term, of course. Gupta is known for his quiet approach to the job, for listening more than talking and trying to build consensus in the room. Connelly said he will lean on Gupta for institutional knowledge of the team and the franchise, as well as helping him connect with a growing analytics department that Gupta has had a major role in shaping and building out into one of the more robust staffs in the league.

'Hustle' director says Adam Sandler was the one who suggested casting Anthony Edwards, and explains how the NBA star became the movie's scene-stealer

Adam Sandler might be who entices Netflix viewers to click play on "Hustle," but it's Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards who's going to leave a lasting impression.

In a movie where some of the world's greatest basketball stars basically play themselves, Sandler and "Hustle" director Jeremiah Zagar had a different plan for Edwards.

"Hustle" delves into the nitty-gritty of the modern NBA world as Sandler plays Stanley, a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers who discovers a phenom named Bo Cruz (Juancho Hernangómez) during an overseas trip. When the 76ers aren't interested in Cruz, Stanley quits the team and decides to risk it all on Cruz by using his league connections to get him drafted to a team.

However, every good sports movie needs a good heel to go up against the hero.

Halfway through the movie, Cruz crosses paths with Kermit Wilts, a top-flight draft prospect who rattles Cruz, thanks to his talent on the court and his vicious trash-talking.

This presented an interesting casting challenge. The person who'd play Wilts didn't just need to be able to ball as well as the Utah Jazz power forward — he'd also have to possess similar acting chops.

"We didn't cast Kermit until the second half of filming," Zagar told Insider over the phone, explaining that the movie was shot over two summers, with the second summer focusing on all the basketball scenes.
"There were a couple of other NBA stars' names thrown around, but when Adam suggest Anthony it just seemed perfect," Zagar added.

Since being drafted by the Timberwolves in 2020, Edwards has quickly become a favorite among NBA fans for his charm and wit during his post-game interviews.

It certainly caught the attention of Sandler.

"I think Adam had been following his press conferences and felt like he has the vibe," Zagar said.

It also helped that Hernangómez was on the Timberwolves during Edwards' rookie season, so they already had chemistry.

But to hone his raw acting talents, Edwards worked with Zagar's longtime acting coach Noelle Gentile, who helped the NBA star get into his character.

However, Zagar said Edwards did not hesitate to make Kermit Wilts his own.
"Anthony would rewrite his lines with Juancho on the day of shooting to make sure they felt like him," he said.

As a result, Edwards became the movie's scene-stealer. He's captivating as the film's antagonist, who goes so far as to talk about Cruz's daughter in the stands to shake him off his game.

Zagar admitted he knew Edwards was gold, even during production.

"There's this shot in the movie that's a oner, where Bo Cruz walks in and meets Kermit for the first time," Zagar recalled. "And the way Anthony was able to deliver his line perfectly every time as that camera moved around is something that seasoned actors have trouble with. So right away you were like, 'Oh my god!'"

Zagar pointed out that, even though some will see Edwards' character as the villain in the movie, he considers him as more than that.
"If Kermit is just a villain he's uninteresting, but if he's an anti-hero, which is how I see him, if he's more like Michael Jordan than some kind of two-dimensional character, he's more exciting. That's what Anthony brought," Zagar said. "That realism and swagger."

"If we were to make a 'Hustle 2' it would be about him," the director added. "That's how I think of it."

I’d take him any day. A welcome addition. He’s a throwback in that he’s a bulky dude who doesn’t shoot 3s at all. But you don’t need your whole roster to be those guys. Need some rebounders and bangers too.

I wouldn't mind him and Vandy together in a second unit....there wouldn't be a rebound or loose ball that we wouldn't get.

I don't consider Vando a great rebounder by any means. He will out hustle most for sure.

Sounds like some Rudy Gobert rumors that would be interesting but maybe a bit old style? I think it would be great to have an actual center starting for us to do the dirty work needed down low.

I don't think you can play 2 total non-shooters together. They would clog the paint and allow other teams to play 4 on 3 on the perimeter.
