Bumping this thread. Priefer will likely win us one game this year but lose us three. All the while he will be lauded for the good things but excused of the poor things. DUMP THIS CHUMP! He (and special teams) is clearly the weak link on this team.

What are you basing this on, other than your bias?

Well why not just read the last page? It's all there.

DAVID F. HAS COOTIES!!!!!

GopherFan34 -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/1/2015 8:28:50 PM)

there's nothing there that supports your position other than a clear bias. Blaming kicking woes on the coach is easy. Obviously Zimmer doesn't agree with you.

Ricky J -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/1/2015 9:48:17 PM)

My take is I don't think anyone here really has a clue whether he's any good or not.

No offense.

Well then perhaps you can read the thread from the beginning then. It's only seven pages. While you're reading I challenge you to come up with a few things that you like about Priefer's performance. Tell me why you support him. Otherwise I might suspect that you have an inherent bias.

bgdavis -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/1/2015 10:29:24 PM)

I'm not sure if Priefer is good or bad, but I do recall seeing some woefully bad Vikings special teams units over the years before he joined the team.

On the other hand, aside from the Bears, special teams units in the NFCN have all tended to look better since Devin Hester left the division.

you are wasting time with this David.. i agree that Priefer is not a good coach..

punting has sucked, Walsh has regressed, our coverage units give up big plays more often...

but DAMN skippy, he hates gays.. so That makes him a SAINT!! ... UNtouchable!! in the eyes of the usual suspects...

David Levine -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/2/2015 12:13:53 AM)

Walsh has regressed.

But Priefer was his coach during his outstanding rookie year and very good 2nd year. And that was coming off a horrible senior season.

So if we blame him for Walsh sucking, do we also credit him for getting him turned around initially?

Or is Walsh just a total headcase?

David F. -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/2/2015 12:59:35 AM)

I'm still waiting for someone to post something about Priefer that they actually like about him. Heck I even made a post about what I like about him! Is it that hard to say something positive about a guy that seemingly so many of you want to keep? Or is it just easier to try and discredit me? For the eleventeenth time - this isn't about Kluwe. I think it would be nice if everyone just focused on Priefer's positives. (Bonus points if you caught that reference)

Arguing with Dave over Priefer makes one a homophobe?

Blocked punt TDs

Return averages are in the positive(comparing what we average to what we give up)

Trick play worked last year

I rate him a positive because I remember Hester and Bush feasting on us regularly and we seem to cover better now.

69in09 -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/2/2015 10:09:38 AM)

Really don't know the point of trying to hold Priefer accountable positively or negatively for the Punting or Kicking.

At the pro level, specialists work on their own and are their coaches. Blaming him for Walsh's slump is ludicrous.

The ST coach should be judged on coverage and protection coordination alone. Every thing I have seen has us above average.

Thumbs up to Priefer.

Vikings coverage units grades from PFF

2011

K -13.2
P -6.7

2012

K 2.5
P 4.0

2013

K -15.4
P 0.6

2014

K 6.0
P 3.4

Todd M -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/2/2015 10:29:37 AM)

In 2010 it was:

K 2.0
P 6.2

Then he drove it off the cliff his first year. Got it back to avg...then it went to shit again.

Todd M -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/2/2015 10:30:51 AM)

Thumbs down to Priefer!

Not a big fan of PFF.

What did they grade our return units?

Todd M -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/2/2015 10:42:12 AM)

They got good grades and helped drive up our overall ranking.

My bad...I said PFF but it's football outsiders...

For retaining him? If in fact it was his say, perhaps. In this one regard. Everything else Zimmer is awesome.

Herein lies the dirty little secret of Zimmer. He LOVES Priefer. I listened to an interview of Zimmer on Sirius NFL not long after he was hired. They specifically asked him about keeping Priefer in light of everything that was going on. Zimmer laughed it off and then started to make a comment about how insignificant of an offense Priefer had committed and then cut himself off. He chuckled and dismissed the whole thing.

Zimmer is an awesome coach and since he wasn't here during the 'nuke island' ordeal I give him a reluctant free pass. I have little doubt that he and Priefer are peas in the same pod when it comes to gay rights but... he hasn't done anything or said anything negative or stupid so - free pass.

He's an idiot for saying Sherels is a good punt returner?

bgdavis -> RE: Mike Priefer must GO (9/2/2015 11:23:19 AM)

I'm surprised that our kick coverage graded out so poorly in 2013. That was Walsh's first year with the team, and he tends to boom kicks so deep that there is often no return. The numbers seem to confirm that:
http://www.footballdb.com/stats/stats.html?lg=NFL&yr=2013&mode=O&conf=&limit=50&sort=kotb
They did give up 1 KO return for a TD, but otherwise, the numbers from the KOs in 2013 don't look bad. Not sure how they merit a -15.4 ranking that season.

The terrible kick coverage numbers in 2011 were no doubt impacted by the fact that Longwell struggled to get the ball into the endzone reliably (only 19 touchbacks on 77 kickoffs which was one of the worst ratios in the league that year), and he graded out as the 3rd worst kicker in the league in terms of kickoff distance:
http://www.footballdb.com/stats/stats.html?mode=O&yr=2011&lg=NFL&sort=koavg
Another factor that year was Hester tearing a new one through the Vikings special teams that year, including a 98-yd TD KO return. His return ability was unique, and he represents an outlier when measuring special teams. Facing Hester twice during those seasons when he played for the Bears while many other teams didn't face him at all definitely skewed the Vikings ST coverage numbers negatively compared to other teams.

Overall, I'd say the PFF ranking numbers are questionable at best. Simple measurements like average return yardage per kick off, or average opponent starting field position (which would factor in touchbacks) tend to be good indicators for the overall ST coverage ability, but they don't seem to match up with the PFF numbers very well.

SOP for a homophobe.. either say nothing that might "out" you.. like Priefer obviously did.. or make excuses and dismiss behavior that you are "alright with".

Zim may be a homophobe, then again, he may just not give a shit as long as it doesn't effect his team doing it's job..

But special teams is definitely not a "strong" suit when you get return TD's about as often as tornados in Minnesota.
