I get that there is a HUGE divide between popularity and revenue, but its kind of amazing that the most a player can make in the WNBA is 115K.

The NBA rookie minimum is 838K. That bumps up to 1.35M for a 2nd year player.

The entire WNBA payroll for all 157 player last year was just over 11M in total. The Wolves will have 6 players making more than that this year alone.

Shit, NBA refs make 150K...

All good things must end. That appears to be the case with the Lynx dynasty. As much as Reeve lived in denial about it, the supporting cast around Moore and Fowles has gotten too old. Lindsey should have followed through on her initial decision to retire. Rather than talk her out of it, Reeve should have looked in earnest for the 3 point shooting that Syl and Maya need to created some space for their post up and driving games. It's sad to this era come to such an abrupt end. Win the championship one year and becoming a long shot to make the playoffs the next year. Seattle has clinched the first playoff spot and there are currently 5 teams ahead of the Lynx for the other 3 spots.

It was a hell of a run and a lot fun.

This is as sudden as the Wolves demise after making the west conference finals and not making the playoffs the next year.

You could definitely see it coming, and I'm kind of amazed that they were as great last year as they were.

We did not have a good offseason. We added two really solid vets, but neither is the outside shooter we so desperately needed. Robinson has hit the first three 3s of her career this year - but its taken her 17 attempts. Wright is hitting a rock solid 39% from 3 - but with the caveat that she's making one every other game.

The other thing to consider is that the rest of the league has gotten way better the past year or two. There is a ton of young talent right now.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/6/2018 12:14:56 PM)

Yup, all we can do is salute them for one hell of a run.
It appears to be over.
Certainly won't fault that org for anything it's done.
Wish others in MN would follow their lead, rather than scoff at it.

Yup.

I was hoping they'd be the Spurs and constantly replenishing the talent. But we haven't really been able to hit on anyone to truly compliment Maya and Syl.

Now comes the next big challenge for Reeves. Big Syl and Maya Moore are still young enough for some big years to come. We'll see how she does trying to build a new supporting cast around them.

Syl is getting up there in age...32. Maya is 29 (right in her prime).

As a big, Syl probably has 4+ All-Star caliber years left. Plenty of time to still consider her a building block.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/6/2018 1:55:25 PM)

Did the Lynx make a deal with Seattle that essentially has them swapping 1st round picks this year? If so, this really complicates matters.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/6/2018 2:04:13 PM)

It looks like the Lynx received the right to swap first round picks with Seattle in 2019 as part of the Natasha Howard trade. Obviously that won't happen at this point.

And Natasha Howard is looking like she might be the league MIP...

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/6/2018 2:13:28 PM)

I recall not being a fan of that trade. I thought Howard played some good ball for the Lynx and was at a good age.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/6/2018 2:24:09 PM)

With 13 losses, we've matched the past 2 seasons - combined.

We're used to being in the Top 2 in both offense and defense. We're currently 4th in defense, but 9th in offense.

Doesn't the NBA subsidize the WNBA to keep it alive?

To the tune of a robust 12 mil a yr. (something like that) Pennies to the NBA. They are not putting in tens of millions into the W. Don't know how much they toss in for the G-League.

If Adam Silver was more attentive to the WNBA, there are a number of areas they could improve upon. Of course the W shares the appearal deal w/Nike but they dont seem to want our money. Example, don't carry enough adult sized t-shirts & seems even with the sponors on the front of jerseys there ARE fans who want to buy them but they never have much on the racks. When the Team store at Target Center sells out of Tees that were popular early in the season, then never order more adult sizes. They are usually left with some small or medium sized items.
Heck I've been asking for over 10yrs for a simple Lynx shot glass. FINALLY, after 20yr they got 'em. Would have preferred the old logo but I'm glad I can add to my collection. The lack of merchandise available for WNBA fans sucks.

The WNBA on ESPN2 think it was like 5 or 7yr deal for something like 12 mil and all they show are about 12, 14 regular season gms and a good bulk of playoff games.
League is competitive as ever, more national TV exposure would be helpful. Sponsors investing in Women's sports is helpful to. The WNBA has tended to be its own worse enemy and that starts with Adam Silver, JMO.

Minnyme -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/9/2018 2:14:52 AM)

For those who don’t follow the WNBA, right now is a good time. [:D]

Aside from the teams in the #1, #11 & #12 spots, spots #2 thru #8 change nightly and they will all be beating each other up to seasons end on Sun 8/19.

So with teams having 4 or 5 gms left to play, teams still have LOTS to play for.

http://www.wnba.com/standings/#?season=2018&sort=tc&dir=1

Playoff spots punched :

#1 Seattle Storm 23-7
#2 ATL Dream 19-10
#3 la sharks 18-11
#4 Washington Mystics 18-11
After Wed night, #5 CT Sun – 17-12 punched their ticket by beating the #8 Dallas Wings.

Now as for our local team, magic number is 2. How?

Eliminated:
#12 – Indiana Fever 5- 24
#11 – NY Liberty 7-22

By beating #10 Chicago Sky 10-19, Tue, Lynx own the tiebreaker and will finish w/a better record.
So any 2 combo of #6 Lynx win and #9 Las Vegas Aces 12-17 loss Lynx are in. Our #6 Lynx 16-13 play the Aces tonight, so win punch your ticket.

#7 Phoenix Mercury 16-14 and #8 Dallas Wings 14-15.

After tonight, Lynx will have 3 of 4 at home (which this season in the WNBA really doesn’t mean much)

They’ll host Seattle on Sunday, Chicago Tue, go to CT on Fri and finish the reg. season hosting Washington a week from Sunday on ESPN2. Be nice to beat CT & Wash.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/10/2018 10:28:34 AM)

We can't quite stick a fork in them yet.

We clinched out 8th straight playoff berth last night.

Maya appears to be heating up at the right time - which is huge with Whalen and Brunson out the past 2 games.

Unfortunately Danielle Robinson looked like she suffered a pretty bad ankle sprain.

We have a chip and a chair. Sometimes that is all you need. Usually you need a lot more.

Goes without saying how cool it would be to muster up one more just for old timeys sake ... [:D]
