ORIGINAL: ronhextall Does the Gopher job pay more than the WNBA job? WNBA Max salary: 115,500 Whalen's Gopher contract: Year 1: 400,000 Year 2: 457,500 Year 3: 496,500 Year 4: 521,325 Year 5: 547,391 I get that there is a HUGE divide between popularity and revenue, but its kind of amazing that the most a player can make in the WNBA is 115K. The NBA rookie minimum is 838K. That bumps up to 1.35M for a 2nd year player. The entire WNBA payroll for all 157 player last year was just over 11M in total. The Wolves will have 6 players making more than that this year alone. Shit, NBA refs make 150K... It's a business. The players make what the market can allow. Doesn't the NBA subsidize the WNBA to keep it alive? To the tune of a robust 12 mil a yr. (something like that) Pennies to the NBA. They are not putting in tens of millions into the W. Don't know how much they toss in for the G-League. If Adam Silver was more attentive to the WNBA, there are a number of areas they could improve upon. Of course the W shares the appearal deal w/Nike but they dont seem to want our money. Example, don't carry enough adult sized t-shirts & seems even with the sponors on the front of jerseys there ARE fans who want to buy them but they never have much on the racks. When the Team store at Target Center sells out of Tees that were popular early in the season, then never order more adult sizes. They are usually left with some small or medium sized items. Heck I've been asking for over 10yrs for a simple Lynx shot glass. FINALLY, after 20yr they got 'em. Would have preferred the old logo but I'm glad I can add to my collection. The lack of merchandise available for WNBA fans sucks. The WNBA on ESPN2 think it was like 5 or 7yr deal for something like 12 mil and all they show are about 12, 14 regular season gms and a good bulk of playoff games. League is competitive as ever, more national TV exposure would be helpful. Sponsors investing in Women's sports is helpful to. The WNBA has tended to be its own worse enemy and that starts with Adam Silver, JMO.
