5-time WNBA All-Star Angel McCoughtry and Lynx reach agreement

Five-time WNBA All-Star Angel McCoughtry reached an agreement with the Minnesota Lynx on Friday, a league source confirmed to The Athletic. GrlsTlkSportsTV reported the news first.

McCoughtry is an unrestricted free-agent and will be leaving the Aces to join the Lynx. The two-time Olympic gold-medalist was out the entire 2021 season for the Aces after suffering a right knee injury during a preseason game against the Sparks. She was diagnosed with a torn ACL and meniscus.

McCoughtry injured her left knee and was sidelined for the remainder of the season along with the entire 2019 season. She averaged 14.4 points per game and 5.1 rebounds in her first season with the Aces in 2020.

Lynx star Napheesa Collier announced her pregnancy in November and is expecting a baby girl in May. She will miss the beginning of the WNBA season. McCoughtry can fill the spot at forward for Minnesota in her absence.

Really hope we're able to resign Davis to one of the 2 Hardship spots.

The Minnesota Lynx announced Tuesday afternoon the signing of free agent point guard Odyssey Sims to a training camp contract.

The team waived waived six players in order to make space for Sims and get the roster down to the necessary 11 players before Thursday’s deadline. Among those included in the cuts were incumbent starting point Layshia Clarendon, 2020 WNBA Rookie of the Year Crystal Dangerfield and 2021 first-round pick Rennia Davis, as well as 2022 draft picks Kayla Jones and Hannah Sjerven, and veteran guard Yvonne Turner.

Minnesota Lynx Sign Forward Rennia Davis to Hardship Contract

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/12/2022 10:50:55 PM)

The Minnesota Lynx this afternoon announced they have agreed to a “mutual separation” with guard Odyssey Sims, and have released guard Yvonne Turner as well as forwards Rennia Davis and Nina Milić from hardship contracts.

The moves come less than an hour after the team announced they had agreed to a buyout with forward Angel McCoughtry.

Sims was signed a little over a week ago, on May 3, in an attempt to remedy unsteady point guard play throughout Lynx camp that resulted in the waiving of one-time All-Star Layshia Clarendon and 2020 Rookie of the Year Crystal Dangerfield.

After playing in the team’s first two games of the season — holding averages of 9.5 points on 30.4/25.0/44.4 shooting, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists to 2.5 turnovers, 0.5 steals and a block in 27.0 minutes per game — the former Baylor standout did not play on Tuesday night against the Fever and was not given a status designation.

Cheryl Reeve said postgame “Odyssey is handling a personal matter” and declined to answer any further questions about the topic.

Additionally, Minnesota released Turner, Davis and Milić from their hardship contracts. No information is presently available about whether any of them will be re-signed to standard contracts with the team. Given the absences of Kayla McBride (overseas commitments), Damiris Dantas (Lisfranc injury) and now Natalie Achonwa (hamstring strain), Minnesota should still be eligible to sign at least one player to hardship exception contracts after this morning’s signing of guard Evina Westbrook.

The Lynx now have two roster spots after agreeing to a buyout with McCoughtry and waiving Sims. Expect more moves to follow. When they come through, we’ll have the news for you here at Canis Hoopus.

WNBA superstar Brittney Griner has been sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for drug possession and smuggling. Griner had been found guilty of the charges in court and finally received her sentencing on Thursday.

Griner was arrested in Feb. for carrying cannabis oil vape cartridges onto an airplane while she was playing for her long-time overseas team UMMC Ekaterinburg. Griner said she made an honest mistake by carrying the vape cartridges while traveling. Russian prosecutors had asked for 9.5 years before the ruling. The time she’s served in custody since her arrest will count towards her sentence.

The United States and Russian have engaged in conversations about a potential agreement around her release, but no agreement has been reached yet. Earlier this summer, it was reported that the White House offered to release Russian international arms dealer Viktor Bout in exchange for Griner and fellow American detainee Paul Whelan.

Griner has played for UMMC Ekaterinburg since 2014 during the WNBA offseason. President Biden issued the following statement after the sentencing:

quote:

President Biden: "Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney. It's unacceptable, and I call on Russia to release her immediately."

Griner was carrying two cartridges that each contained one gram of cannabis oil. Americans can legally purchase the same cannabis oil cartridges she was carrying in 19 states for recreational purposes.

Ignorance is usually only a defense in the US and maybe a few other places, but I'm shocked to see the length of the sentence for such a small amount.
I'm sure the Russians are making a point but unfortunate for sure.

I'm also surprised how many still seem to be going over there to play.

Hard to turn down 10x the money to play overseas.

ESPN Women's Hoops@ESPN_WomenHoop
WNBA draft lottery results:

No. 1 pick: Indiana Fever
No. 2 pick: Minnesota Lynx
No. 3 pick: Atlanta Dream
No. 4 pick: Washington Mystics

Canis Hoopus@canishoopus
Jumping to No. 2 is a huge win for the Lynx, who held a 75.15% chance of landing No. 4 and a 14.45% chance of landing No. 2.

Whether the Lynx use the pick to select Stanford star G Haley Jones, a different player, or package it in a trade, it'll be a 2023 season-changing asset.

Wow has interest in the Lynx declined. Not even a mention of Diamond Miller being drafted 2nd overall last year or Alissa Pili an offensive machine drafted at pick 8 this year.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/17/2024 8:27:50 PM)

Here's how Miller and fellow Lynx rookie Dorka Jahasz made the WNBA all rookie team.

Minnesota Lynx Dorka Juhász and Diamond Miller Named to 2023 WNBA All-Rookie Team
October 2, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – The WNBA announced today that Minnesota Lynx center Dorka Juhász and forward Diamond Miller have been named to the All-Rookie Team.

Juhász and Miller become the 10th and 11th Lynx rookies to garner this honor. They become the first rookies to be named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team since Crystal Dangerfield in 2020 and the second pair of Lynx rookies since Nicky Anosike and Candice Wiggins in 2008.

At the end of the regular season, Miller led all rookies in free throw shooting with 79.2% and second in overall field goal percentage with 40.3%. She finished ranked second in scoring (12.1 ppg), fifth in rebounding (3.5 rpg) and second in assists (2.5 apg). Amongst rookies, Juhász led in assists (2.6 apg), finished fourth in scoring (6.0 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.5 rpg).

On Sept. 1 against Atlanta Juhász ended the game with 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting, a career-high 16 rebounds, six assists and one block. Her 16 rebounds set a new Lynx rookie rebound record and she became only the third WNBA rookie to have 10+ points/15+ rebounds/5+ assists and only the second to do so without any turnovers. This game was then followed on Sept. 3 against Phoenix when she finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, a career-high eight assists and two blocks. With these two games, she became only the second WNBA rookie to amass consecutive games with 10+ points/10+ rebounds/6+ assists. Juhász ended the season with 247 rebounds which sets a new record for rebounds by a Lynx rookie.

On August 29, Miller led Minnesota over Washington, tallying a game-high 25 points on 7-of-16 from the field and 4-of-7 from deep with her four three-pointers tied her season-high and was the rookie to achieve multiple games with four made threes. She became only the second first-year Lynx player to connect on 4+ three-pointers in consecutive games, the first time since 1999. This game also marked her second 25+ point game, making her the first Lynx rookie to do so since Maya Moore had two in 2011. In Minnesota’s game against the Chicago Sky on Sept. 8, Miller finished with 24 points, and shot 10-of-11 from the field, 3-of-4 from the three and 1-of-3 from the line. She became the second rookie to notch 10+ field goals in a game and this also marked her fifth 20+ point game, the second most by a rookie this season. She ended the game with an effective field goal percentage of 104.6 and became only the third Lynx player to reach 100% or better, joining Seimone Augustus (2007) and Charde Houston (2009) in this mark. Miller ended the season as only the third Lynx rookie to amass at least 380 points, 110 rebounds, 30 steals and 10 blocks, joining Napheesa Collier (2019) and Maya Moore (2011) to achieve this feat.

Lynx defense is really, really good.

Unfortunately our offense is a mess without Phee.

End of the reg WNBA season tonight:

(2) MN Lynx v. LA Sparks.

(8) Atl Dream at (1) NY Liberty

(10) Chi Sky at (3) Conn Sun

(6) Ind Fever at (9) Wash Mystics

(5) Sea Storm at (7) Pho Mercury

:

If the Dream win, they are in [the playoffs] ... if the Dream lose, they could still snag the final spot in two other scenarios: if Washington and Chicago also lose, or if Washington wins and Chicago loses.

The only situation where Washington makes it into the postseason is if it wins, as does Chicago, but Atlanta loses.

For the Sky to earn the final berth, they need to win and need Atlanta and Washington to lose.

... The Sun's seed isn't locked in yet. They start the day in third, but a loss Thursday combined with a Las Vegas Aces victory over the Dallas Wings would move up the Aces to the No. 3 seed and drop the Sun to No. 4. -- espn

Congratulations to Cheryl Reeve and the Lynx on a great season. This may be one of Reeve's best jobs ever. She built a team low one individual star power, but great on synergy and coached them to the #2 seed. The only blemish is the inexplicable decision to trade out of drafting Angel Reese. The Lynx have beaten all of the top teams in the playoffs this year. The post season could be fun.

Totally explainable. There is a reason she dropped to 7th and why her own team passed on her once before drafting her.

She's a generational rebounder. But she's the worst offensive player in the game and her defense is almost as bad. And I doubt her ego would've let her take a supporting role on this team.
