As much as I love Curry, I'm not sure just adding him to the roster makes us a multiple time champion.

That's not my point David. My point is that the Wolves had and squandered many opportunities to make this team a serious contender.

Word is that Tina Charles was not even going to play this year if the Sun didn't trade her.

I've been banging that drum for more than a decade.

My point was that while the Wolves were making mistakes, they didn't have the clear-cut choices that were afforded to the Lynx.

Its not hard to draft LeBron at #1, but taking a flyer on Paul George at #4 is not a given.

Augustus and Moore were very obvious picks no question about that. Trading Tina Charles for Lindsay Whalen turned out to be a great choice despite Charles winning an MVP. Claiming Brunson in the dispersal draft was a great choice. I am not sure if it was an obvious choice. Going with the old lady Taj was a great choice. Luck and insight worked together to make for two championships and counting.

I was surprised to see Conn trade Tina Charles. They traded Linsay to Lynx to get that draft pick for her

1 year left and she was going to bolt.

Nah, she’s not leaving. She’s from NY, went to Christ the King H..S.

CT had a bunch of issues last season. They are basically rebuilding :

quote:

“I'm disappointed, but, truthfully, you just have got to have people that are committed to winning and want to be here,” Donovan said. “That just didn't describe Tina any more. She did not want to be in Connecticut, she made that clear and so moving forward, we will have players here that want to be here.”

Yes to the bold. Having the #1 pick in 2010 was due to a trade w/NY in 2009 for thier 1st round pick. NY slipped up and missed the playoffs (took a chance) and the ping-pong balls fall right (luck) Renee Montgomery wasn't the pg we needed so the swap of Montomery & #1-Charles for Whalen & #2 M. Wright did work out great for us.

NY slipped up again with the dispersal draft in 2010. They picked 1st and took SF Nicole Powell [sm=banghead.gif] leaving us to select Brunson [sm=beer.gif] (luck & knowing value)

Taj, came to MN because of Reeve reaching out to her and Taj having played for Reeve while in Detroit. (Insight, good connection). Taj never would have come here to play for Don Zierden(sp) or Jen Gilliom.

All the other high picks on the team have come via trades : #4-Harris- '11, #3 Peters- '12, #1 McCarville- '05 and now #2 Tan White- '05

Minnyme -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/20/2014 11:43:36 PM)

Amber Harris & Rachel Jarry are not expected back, due to injuries.

Sugar Rodger was traded to NY in exchange to swap 3rd rnd picks next year. She wants more PT & she didn’t show enough of anything to earn it so no problem with her moving on.

The Lynx have signed FA Tan White who has also left CT.

Lynx probably did about as good as they could have with the picks they had. I wonder what the chances of even one of them making an impact on the team are?

With how the first 11 picks went, the rest of this draft was a crap shoot to me. So considering were we picked and our needs this wasn’t that bad of a draft at all.

Liston has a chance to replace Jarry and she’s a better shooter. I’ve been ho hum on her but she was in a tough position her senior yr because of all the injuries at Duke. Defense will be her biggest challenge but that was the same for RJ.

http://www.heraldsun.com/sports/x27233738/Gray-Liston-selected-in-first-round-of-WNBA-Draft

quote:

But Monday night, when her big moment came in the draft, Liston was in the dark. At home in Chicago surrounded by family, her television blacked out just after Gray was picked.

With Bussie, she will come in to compete with Dantas and Rolle for a post sport. The other 2 have some pro experience on Bussie but never know. This will be where the real competition is going to be. I’d like to hope 2 of the 3 could prove worth keeping.

http://wvmetronews.com/2014/04/15/lynx-choose-bussie-at-no-15-making-her-programs-highest-wnba-pick/

quote:

The 6-foot-4 Bussie, one year removed from ACL surgery, averaged 12.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game as a fifth-year senior. She exited ranking sixth on West Virginia’s career rebounding list with 853 and 11th in scoring at 1,497 points

I'm kind of pulling for her. I like that she likes defense.
quote:

Bussie will join a crowded group of post players vying for playing time and roster spots.

"Whatever the role is, I will play it to the best of my ability,'' she said. "They are big on defense; I am big on defense. That is one of my strengths.''

As for Foggie and Taylor, mostly camp fodder now, don’t seem to stand much of a chance with the T. White signing.

The Lynx also have signed MN native Theairra Taylor who was the Iowa Hawkeyes only senior to a training camp contract. Glad to see her get into a camp. She’s a great story for those who don’t know:

How significant do you think the signing of Tan White is?

Short answer: I hope minimal .... in route to another title [;)]

Long answer: We do need some back-up, back-up help if you know what I mean. Rogers thinks she should get more PT [sm=doh2.gif] so it’s fine she's been moved. Tan, she's a vet; is on the small side (5-8 tops); she's kind of the quick, pesky type. She's a vet who I view as more stable and insurance vs. a rookie (or Sugar Rogers).

My reservations; I thought Lex Hornbuckle in '11 was given too much PT and in '12 I thought Erin Thorn didn't get enough mins. In Tan's case I don't like the idea of her getting into Monica's mins (who has earned all her's and some) or mins that (I think) should go to Lindsey Moore to aid in her development. Now of course all mins should be earned, that's a given. So we shall see. I suspect she knows the deal that she's here to produce when called on, play defense & be a team player.

I’d kind of liked to see another young guard added but the team has the money so bringing in Tan White shouldn’t be all bad, so it's an ok move.

Side note: I see Monica Wright as maybe the most valuable player on this squad. If she were to get injured for any amount of time ... yikes. She's a valuable insurance policy; She covers 3 positions being able to come in for Whay, 'Mone or Maya, a legit starter. I expect her to only get better & more dangerous as she’s just hitting her prime. I think Lindsey Moore will come back stronger & more confident in her 2nd year showing she can handle more PG duties. And I love Dev Peters & I think in her 3rd year she’ll come back ready to step it up too.

So needless to say I’m just as excited if not more so to watch some of our reserves vs. our starters [sm=thumb.gif]

I raised some ire in this thread when I mentioned how smaller super quick PG types gave Whalen some trouble. Maybe Tan can be somebody who can come in and keep up with the super quick PGs that Whalen has trouble with.

Thanks for the complement Jim [:o] Not with the league or the team. Just a chick who’s into sports [sm=icon_mrgreen.gif]

Haa, but really, I’m a season ticketholder, gotten to know some folks around the league over the years as well. I follow the women’s college game which is fun cuz they stay for 4 yr. So me spitting my knowledge is no different then all you guys talk about players in depth, breaking down NFL or NBA teams needs.; understand the game, make observations & have an opinion. Wish the women’s game had a Hubbie Brown type doing TV so people would get a feel for the depth of the women’s game & less of the fluff stuff.

Remove the dunk and pretty much everything else about the game of basketball fits the men and women; strategies, match ups, X’s & O’s pretty similair. When people who like basketball, male & female talk about how boring the women’s game is, to me they haven’t watched enough women’s games at the highest level in recent years and/or just don’t appreciate how good these women really are. And with the Minnesota Lynx, the Twin Cities area is privy to some of the best female players, not just in the country but in the WORLD.

Sure there can be some stinky games played in the W but its not as if NBA teams don’t stink it up nightly. The Lynx are a great team to watch. If you’re a basketball fan, should check out a Lynx game. Despite some people saying they’re too slow [;)] not tall enough, have a weak bench blah, blah, blah, the Lynx are still better then all the other teams. They're that team in the WNBA that can boast of being a top 3 defensive teams and top 3 offensive team. This is a talented team with a bunch of high IQ players and a really good coaching staff. Basically I just love watching this team play [sm=french-french-paris-france-.gif]

Plus the atmosphere & energy in TC is great. The Lynx have lost only 8 home gms TOTAL over the last 3 yrs. TC has become the best home court in the W. The closer you are to the court, the more into the game fans are. Folks aren’t there just for show, they’re actually there to watch the women play. And yes game ops makes BWright be just as annoying during Lynx games as they have him at Wolves games [;)]

Ok I'm done [8|]

Lindsay is a Minnesota girl and a great Lynx star. However, she doesn't walk on Water I think that was only Jesus and for a brief time Peter. I once suggested that she may have already had her best season. That was met with consternation. I'm just making observations. She is a great player, but I remember a super quick point guard giving her fits. Just thinking about ways our Lynx could be even better. I think a super quick pg who can keep up with other super quick pgs might be one way to do that.

Gee in other words I may have been wrong but was that season undeniably her best? If it wasn't you can't even say i was wrong. I would love for Lindsay to have her undeniably best season ever this year and really prove me wrong. That would be awesome.
DL I am curious if you think Tan White might be a player who can cover when the opponent has that super quick PG. I know Lindsay can take advantage of smaller PGs on offense by posting them up and passing over them, but guarding them and getting the ball up court against them IMO is not a strength of hers.

I'm really not that concerned about it. No one stops super quick PGs on their own. That's where having excellent team defense comes in so handy.

And Whalen rarely has trouble getting the ball up court against anyone. And if she did, we have plenty of secondary ballhandlers that can help her out.

It bugs me that I don't remember just who it was that I am thinking about that gave her fits. Short lightning quick PG. Would it be Lindsey Harding? Does she fit the description of super quick?

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/25/2014 6:11:56 PM)

I really haven't seen a PG give her fits that didn't every other PG fits as well. Harding had her back on her heels a couple of years back. Then Whalen would go down to the other end and over power Harding. In the end Whalen got the better of it. Whalen had some work on her knee before last season. I haven't really seen any PG exactly blow up on her since, so she may have been slowed for a couple of years by the knee.
