5 seconds left, up 5 and fouled by PHX.

We're going to Game 3!

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/31/2014 4:41:43 PM)

Maya and Mone score 24 of our 28 4th quarter points.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/31/2014 4:44:14 PM)

Game was tied at 75 with 32 seconds left. Lynx score final 7 points (before Taursi scored a meaningless 2 at the buzzer).

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/31/2014 5:07:37 PM)

WOW Great comeback. I couldn't watch. It was blacked out on WNBA All Access and not working on first row sports. Damn it

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/31/2014 5:10:58 PM)

WOW judging by the box score it was all about the three all stars. We need others to step up. All other players shot a combined 3-16. Ouch.

This might be the premiere series in the history of WNBA playoffs. Glad to see it is going to the wire.

Augustus the hero, but Moore, Whalen fueled Lynx in Game 2
by Nate Parham

Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals started out rough for the Minnesota Lynx, but they recovered and came up with big plays down the stretch to beat the Phoenix Mercury and force a decisive Game 3.

All-Stars Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen made big plays throughout Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, but fellow Olympian Seimone Augustus was ultimately the hero of the Minnesota Lynx's 82-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury.

With the game tied at 75 apiece, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve called an out-of-bounds play that had Augustus follow Moore around a screen to clear space for a mid-range jumper and Augustus not only converted the shot but also drew a foul for a three point play that put the Lynx up for good.

But the Lynx wouldn't even have been in position to win had it not been for the play of Moore and Whalen prior to that moment.

Moore bounced back from a poor Game 1 performance to score 13 of her game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter, when the Lynx took their first lead of the game since its early moments. But once again, it was Lindsay Whalen whose heart helped to keep the Minnesota Lynx afloat in the face of a deep hole early in the game.

Similar to their Game 2 performance in the first round, the Lynx found themselves in a huge hole early as they got down by 22-9 after the first quarter. Rebounding helped them stay in it, especially with Mercury center Brittney Griner going without a rebound in the first half. But it was Whalen's resolve, highlighted by scoring 12 of her 17 points in the second quarter, that helped keep the team in the game - it will go unnoticed in the box score, but she was the catalyst that got the team going with her grit and never-say-die attitude. After that extremely poor first quarter shooting performance, the Lynx would shoot 47.2% the rest of the way.

As the Lynx began heating up offensively, the Mercury saw their numbers go in the opposite direction. Diana Taurasi led Phoenix a team-high 23 points but shot just 4-for-14 in the second half. And after correcting the rebounding problem in the second half, the Mercury struggled to keep the Lynx off the free throw line in the second: the home team shot 16 free throws to the visitors' 4 in the second half.

The teams will resume play on Tuesday on NBA TV in a decisive Game 3 to determine who goes the the 2014 WNBA Finals.

The Big 3 were the only Lynx to score the entire first half.

Mo'Ne Davis was at the game and got to meet her Idol, Maya.

Nice pics but who is Mo'Ne Davis?

Jim Frenette -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/31/2014 6:20:45 PM)

Mo'ne Davis played in the little league WS for Pennsylvania and pitched a shutout in their 1st game there. She wants to play in the WNBA when she gets older.

BTW, the game was on ABC today

She's one of the bigger recent stories in sports.

The first girl to earn a win and to pitch a shutout in Little League World Series history. She is the 18th girl overall to play, the sixth to get a hit, and the fourth American girl to play in the Little League World Series. She is also the first Little League baseball player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a Little League player.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/31/2014 7:24:24 PM)

Had a weird vibe about this Lynx week.
Bunch of the players were on a TC station mid-week, begging for the fans to pull out all the stops on Sunday, because it'd be for their playoff lives.
Is this pro wrasslin? Or have the Lynx simply given in, that their run is over?
I didn't like the connotation.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (8/31/2014 7:27:10 PM)

There have been a helluva lot of games this year where Lindsay swung the momentum away from a loss, over to a win.
Yes, she makes some dumb decisions, yes, she disappears some games, but for the most part, she seems as important as anyone we have.

OK now I know who Mo'Ne Davis is. I guess if she is in the WNBA in ten years I will probably think back to this moment.

I just read about Cheryl half time speech. She took last years trophy in the room and had a couple of players tug on it and kept pulling it away and then said this is ours, we won't let anyone take it away from us, then sat in down in the middle of the floor. Great motivational speech

Jim thanks for sharing that. Great job Cheryl. They are going to have to dig deep to win at Phoenix but I think they can do it. Just neutralize Griner there a bit like we did here.

Souhan: Lynx's Big Three comes through again
Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune Updated: September 1, 2014 - 7:47 AM

The Whalen-Augustus-Moore trio willed the Lynx to victory in a do-or-die game.

Timberwolves fans have set franchise records for purchasing season tickets this week. Their team hasn’t made the playoffs in a decade, but they are excited about one incoming player who has produced one disappointing college season, and another who did not make his college team’s starting five.

Sunday afternoon, Target Center was less than full when the home team fell behind by 13 points in the first quarter. Then Lindsay Whalen, the great point guard from Hutchinson, started a comeback, and Maya Moore, the greatest female player in the world, accelerated it, and Seimone Augustus, one of the great scorers in recent history, served as the closer in an 82-77 victory over the best team in the WNBA.

Whalen leapt around the court during the game. Her coaches say they look for “The Whalen Face” in big moments. Sunday, she offered a dozen new expressions while proving she is the toughest basketball player of any age or gender in town.

Moore shook off five straight quarters of offensive struggles to finish with 32 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Augustus hit the biggest shots in the fourth quarter as Target Center grew rock-concert loud.

Not that the joint was packed. The lower bowl was fairly full, and the upper deck was cordoned off, as usual.

Jim Petersen is the foremost hoops guru in our state. He played at the University of Minnesota, then in the NBA. He is the color analyst on Timberwolves broadcasts, and an assistant coach with the Lynx.

He was as close as he gets to speechless after Sunday’s game.

“The people in this town who are missing seeing these great players are going to be like all of those basketball fans who missed the great players in the ABA,” Petersen said. “Was that league great every night? No. But it gave you a chance to see Dr. J [Julius Erving] in his prime, and the Iceman [George Gervin] and Artis Gilmore. That’s what people are missing here. People who missed those ABA games are probably still kicking themselves, and a lot of people around here will be one day, too.”

After three years of relentless excellence, three years of winning titles together and for their country and at various stops in Europe and Asia, Augustus, Whalen and Moore were given the option on Sunday afternoon to take a rare early vacation. They declined.

Playing what appears to be a superior team, the Lynx faced a 13-point deficit early. With less reliable depth than they had on their previous WNBA championship teams, the three Olympians scored all of the Lynx’s points in the first half and 72 in total.

“It’s a credit to their leadership, and Whalen in particular,” Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. “Lindsay has just been so important to us. I think she’s gone to another level. Her leadership is at an all-time high on both sides of the ball. She’s willing us to do things, and she’s holding people accountable, and she herself is playing great.”

Whalen is 32. She has spoken about the difficulties of life as a women’s star, playing in Europe and American and for Team USA. Augustus is 30, and Moore is, remarkably, just 25.

I asked Augustus if the three have talked about how much longer they have together, and she rolled her eyes, saying, “Please don’t ask that question. … People treat 30 like it’s 65.”

The question was not based on age but on the fragility of such alliances. Whalen could retire. One injury or front office decision could break up the group, or limit the chances of winning together again.

Remember, Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer were supposed to retire together while showing off their World Series rings in a ceremony at Target Field in 2025.

The question didn’t contain ageism; it contained trepidation. Sports teams plan; sports gods laugh.

Augustus, Moore and Whalen form the most accomplished and uplifting trio of basketball players we’ve seen in this town since … ever?

Sunday, they played as if they don’t want any of this to end, not this playoff run, not the loud days and nights at Target Center, not the championship bond that led to those long hugs at midcourt after they had won together again.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/2/2014 5:47:21 AM)

What the must NOT do tonight.
1. They must NOT allow themselves to fall into another 1st quarter hole as they did in game 1. Even a smaller deficit like game 2 will be pretty iffy to come back in Phoenix.

2. Maya Moore can NOT allow herself to be shut down as she was for the first 6 quarters of this series. The great ones simply don't allow that to happen and Maya can't allow it to happen again.

3. They must NOT get caught up in playing iso-ball.

What they MUST do.

1. They MUST get more physical with Griner. Reeves stated that Griner is the only player being allowed to initiate contact inside, but they have to overcome that. There has to be a body on her at all times. She has eluded defenders while rolling to the basket too many times this series. We need Peters in particular to step it up here.

2. Brunson MUST find a way to make it the big 4 again instead of the big 3. Her knee, no doubt has not regained all of its strength, but she has to find a way. For that matter Wright has to make herself more of a factor.

3. They MUST share the ball. When the ball moves the offense fires on all cylinders.

4. Somebody needs to do something to piss off Augustus before the game. As Reeves put it, when Simone gets pissed off, we win.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/2/2014 5:58:07 AM)

Glad to read some positive stuff from you guys.
I still get the feeling the Lynx don't feel they can win there.
Very odd for this group. Hoping I'm wrong.

Get it done ladies. We can't quite be considered a dynasy yet. We need this title. I admit I am greedy.
