The #Vikings have announced the signing of LB Hardy Nickerson.

CB Marcus Sayles has been waived.

(Purple Post on Twitter)

First thought was isn't he in his 50s?

Had no idea he had a kid that's been in the league for 3 years.

That got me scratching my head as well.

Boy does time fly.

Yup sounds like the needle opposite to Holton with Hughes in the slot are the starting 3 as of right now

So....Waynes tore his pec muscle at Bengal camp and out most of the year......Rick dodged that one.

also looks like our 3rd round comp pick could be demoted to a 4th round pick...hopefully that sticks....

He signed for 14 million AAV. Why would our 3rd round pick be demoted by an injury? That is messed up if true.

i have read it several places, but i cannot explain the process....

more: apparently the amount waynes plays factors into it...a guy over at overthecap has a compensatory pick program and he ran it after inputting waynes' injury and we netted a 4th round pick...if waynes plays 60% or more of the defensive plays for cincinnati it would improve to a 3rd again....

Correct.

Salary is only a part of the formula for compensatory picks. Snaps played figures in, as does postseason awards.

Salary and snaps are, by far, the biggest factors. So when people are guessing at the picks before the season starts, they're assuming a full season for the player. If they play significantly less, it can easily drop the pick a round.

Quick observations from Tuesday’s practice:

-Dalvin Cook was a little more involved in team drills, and looks like the RB we know.
-Right side of OL (Bradbury, Elflein and O’Neill) thrived in 1-on-1s, and looked good in team portions.
-Bailey was 4/4 on FGs, is 7/7 in camp.

I'm interested in his comments on the individual one on one battles along the line. I've heard nothing about our 4th round rookies, by the way.

I hope like hell that at least one if not two current non-starters crack the lineup. Our line was below average last season and the two worst players are still starters at the moment.

Remember Arizona released Sam whathisname before a certain date midseason and we ended up getting squat.

Day one, consisting of standing around 80% of the time, is in the books. Lots of anointed players, rookie starters, nobody looked bad. This year the bench is essentially another set of starters.

Which is what you need, what with next man up and all.

Yeah that was calculated. However, you can't release an injured player I don't think. Sounds like for sure the pick will be diminished though. Crap.

I hate the IDL with a passion.
I hope Sharpe is better than Bisi and I hope Hughes is ahead of Hill in two CB sets.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/19/2020 10:23:47 AM)

KG: I hate the IDL with a passion.

He could have given his third down personnel for the IDL. It sounds like Mata'afa is looking good for at least a third down role at 3tech. Watts is too good to be sitting on the bench. Perhaps he spells Stephen on third down.

It's early, yet. The coaches want to win.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/19/2020 10:28:49 AM)

They're going to start the vets for the most part due to the lack of camp and PS reps.

But as bruce pointed out plenty of players will see the field

In Andre Cornelius Patterson Sr. we trust.

Contract talks broke off Tuesday between the #Vikings and star RB Dalvin Cook, sources tell me and

Talks could restart later, of course. But for now, Cook has said he's focused on Week 1 as he enters last year of his rookie deal, with franchise tag looming in 2021.

Notice he says week 1. He can play week one and hold out the rest of the year, or have a mysterious injury, and become a free agent next year.

kgdabom -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/19/2020 1:59:51 PM)

The rest of the story.

DALVIN COOK
RB, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports Vikings RB Dalvin Cook "broke off" contract talks with the team and will focus on preparing for Week 1.
Cook will apparently ride out the final year of his rookie deal and resume contract talks with the Vikings after the season. To reach free agency, Cook must play at least six games this season, but he has explicitly said he's preparing for Week 1 and pushed back on reports that he planned to hold out in 2020. Alexander Mattison remains a high-upside insurance pick in the early double-digit rounds just in case Cook has a change of plans or if Cook's shoulder acts up again. For now, Cook belongs in the back half of the first round as a true bell cow back.

I thought it was confirmed that players only needed to play one game this season to accrue a years service, but this is saying it's 6 games like it always has been.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/19/2020 3:00:49 PM)

The Vikings have the franchise tag option. That would be about 13 mil. I'm hearing that the Vikings have all of the leverage. Personally I don't want the Vikings to pay that kind of money for an RB, especially with a reduced salary cap.

There must not be a practice today. I'm not seeing anything yet on Twitter. Slow day.

also, next offseason there are several nfl rb's coming entering free agency, and a slew of very good college rb's entering the draft...perhaps spielman figures he'll draft one early and keep our cap under control....

cook is as good as anyone when he's healthy and fresh, but we just can't count on all of the planets being lined up for him at the end of the season....

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/19/2020 3:11:46 PM)

Beyond the standard setup where Cook would have to wait a year to secure a long-term deal, I don't see much leverage:

- They have to pay a RB $13 million.
- They probably won't have much cap space. They can always create some, but at the expense of players they may want to keep.
- The league wide cap could decrease, compounding the problem.
- You could go into next season with the same issue, except it would be too expensive to tag Cook again.

In short, a cap strapped team offering $8-10 million but having to pay $13 million in a potentially decreased cap year then later realistically losing said player is not having "all the leverage".

The only way we'll have any real leverage is if Mattison and Boone look great.

kgdabom -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/19/2020 3:16:04 PM)

Nobody IMO is going to pay Cook more than $10 Million a year. I think the Vikings are willing to pay him $10 million a year. That's the right number. Git r Dun. [:D]
