Mixon Details:

Full details on the #Bengals deal for RB Joe Mixon’s 4-year, $48M deal:
— $10M signing bonus. $1.3M base in 2020.
— $8M base in 2021.
— $8M in 2022.
— $9.4M in 2023.
— Club option for $9.6M in 2024.
— $500K each year in playtime and $200K offseason workout bonus each year.

We'd have to backload a little more and 3M in incentives would have to be upped to 8-12M. Only 19M guarantted.

Not sure how that adds up to 48 million for four years

Mixon's deal?

10M Signing bonus
8M in 2021
8M in 2022
9.4M in 2023
9.6M in 2024
2M Playtime bonus
800K workout bonus
---------------------
47.8M

Seems close enough to call 48.

The numbers you provided might add up to 47.8. The numbers he was questioning didn't.

I guess the best way to say it for me would anybody be happy if moments after our team was vanquished by the 49ers largely because our OLine got completely destroyed by the 9er DLine that our big move to improve this giant hole in the roster would be to move our worst OLineman to RG, and move his backup in to start at LG?

Pretty insane on its face...

Add in the fact that we invested heavily in a qb that requires protection to be successful.

All QBs require protection to be successful. A lot of people think Cousins needs more protection than most to be successful. He was very successful last year. Did he get better protection than most QBs?
He was a top five rated QB while passing under pressure. I think the idea that Cousins needs more protection that most QBs is a myth.

Cousins had the #13 QB Rating in the league and was 7th worst in quarterback fumbles.

Clearly IOL is the weak link of this team. Our best IOLineman in Kline was cut and replaced with a career back up.

Upgrading Dozier or Elf seemed like the more prudent move necessary to improve the team vs upgrading Odinigbo.

I was projecting what I would do for a Cook contract. Less base, more incentives. It's why I said "We'd" meaning the Vikings and implied a contract for Cook. We are also tighter against the cap and the contract would probably have to be backloaded more.

They hired Dennison and Kubiak to fix the problem....so it is still on them and they added pieces.....Elf, O'Neil, Samia, Cleveland, Bradbury, Udoh, etc.

Cut Elf and Gedeon and throw 3-4 million at a OG FA....still time if they don't have a fix now.

Again here is the 2015 Denver OLine that won the SB:
T Ryan Harris 30 8 16 Denver Broncos / 3rd / 70th pick / 2007

Minnesota's Interception thrown rate was 9th best in the league last year at 1.71

Mannion had 2 INTS in 21 attempts.

That's with the 27th worst passing oline in the league.

I'm not sure how to feel about the Reiff thing...

Are we better with him? Maybe...
The idea that you were basically willing to let the guy walk... but now he is your best option at LT? Doesn't sit great.

If before the offseason you told me the starting 2020 line would be:
LT Reiff
LG Dozier
C Bradbury
RG Elf
RT O'Neil

1) I wouldn't be impressed.
2) I'd say I think it highly unlikely we'll do nothing to add starters.

If they get manhandled by GB... which i think is likely... it's going to be another crappy day in a crappy year.

BUT I HOPE TO HECK I"M WRONG AND DOZIER/ELF IMPRESS!
That would be a nice surprise.

That's your takeaway?

Fumble recovery is unpredictable - 2018 we lost a ton, 2019 we didn't.

I was adding color to Brad's post. Cousins is above average in fumbling and below average in throwing interceptions.

If that makes you feel vindicated instead of calling it a 4 year extension, all the more power to you.

But he signed a 4 year extension. The 1.3M base salary for 2020 is the final year of his rookie contract. The Bengals just split the bonus money into all 5 years he's under contract instead of the 4 new ones so he gets an extra 2.7M this year.

Right, that is why I think this Cousins falls apart under pressure stuff is a myth. He's very good under pressure. My favorite play of his under pressure was the TD to Rudolph to win the playoff game. He had two blitzers right in his face on that one.

— Club option for $9.6M in 2024.
— $500K each year in playtime and $200K offseason workout bonus each year.

We'd have to backload a little more and 3M in incentives would have to be upped to 8-12M. Only 19M guarantted.

Not sure how that adds up to 48 million for four years

Mixon's deal?

10M Signing bonus
8M in 2021
8M in 2022
9.4M in 2023
9.6M in 2024
2M Playtime bonus
800K workout bonus
---------------------
47.8M

Seems close enough to call 48.

The numbers you provided might add up to 47.8. The numbers he was questioning didn't.

I was projecting what I would do for a Cook contract. Less base, more incentives. It's why I said "We'd" meaning the Vikings and implied a contract for Cook. We are also tighter against the cap and the contract would probably have to be backloaded more.

I was looking at his pay for 20-23 since you were showing the 5th year as an option. I should have been looking at 21-24. That's where I got the disconnect between your numbers and DLs. My apologies to DL as his numbers were the same as yours except spread over 5 years not 4.

11.3M of that money is not in years 21-24

It's a 4 year extension. The 10M signing bonus is new money and part of the 48M.

It's still a 5 year deal

If that makes you feel vindicated instead of calling it a 4 year extension, all the more power to you.

But he signed a 4 year extension. The 1.3M base salary for 2020 is the final year of his rookie contract. The Bengals just split the bonus money into all 5 years he's under contract instead of the 4 new ones so he gets an extra 2.7M this year.

He gets the full $10M SB this year, the cap hit is pro-rated over 5 years. Oh it feels so good saying that.
