The dead cap wasn't going to change. The salary will be agreed to or he will be cut.

Our strategy has been, as Childress or more importantly Immortan Joe would say, "Mediocre"! Draft one player in the first 4 rds, make some wild stabs in the later rounds, pick up a middling vet or two, and allow Cousins start another prayer group.

Beavers Elflein Isidora O'Neill Gossett Bradbury Samia Udoh Cleveland Brandel Hinton 'has' (not the plural 'have' because that is one big amorphous blob of OL talent) produced one good starter (so far) in O'Neill and below average overall OL play. Our last game was freakin' abysmal how could we not be panicking and selling out for OL help?

Sure, hopefully Bradbury makes a big leap this year and is average or better, and Cleveland / one of the late round stabs will end up being more than just depth – but only a true homer thinks that's a given.

After the volcanic free agency eruption of Reiff and Remmers in 2017, we have augmented our draft strategy with Josh Andrews, Tom Compton, Bryan Witzmann, Josh Kline, Brett Jones, Dakota Dozier.

I wonder if Hall had passed his physical, if we still would have signed Ngakoue ... probably. Our 'dire' cap situation seems only to be dire in relation to helping the OL, not the rest of the team and especially not the defense.

Great post,. I LOLed at the bolded.

"Beavers Elflein Isidora O'Neill Gossett Bradbury Samia Udoh Cleveland Brandel Hinton".

Going back further and you have the likes of Clemmings and Yankey as well.

We have one excellent player from that list, a few who have already busted out and a bunch of question marks, We need to get 4 good-to-great starters from that list. There are three starters on the list, but only one has yet qualified under the "good-to-great' part.

Thanks. I will grant you that the Spielman has drafted more and better OL in the last few years ... but the standard is low and our current situation is based on a lot of jacked-up hopefulness.

WR. One can question whether they should have traded Diggs, but drafting Jefferson, signing an improving Sharpe, expecting more from Smith Jr, and emphasizing rushing combine to help alleviate losing Diggs.

IDL. After they signed Pierce, I was ok with the rotating mass of humanity that would start next to Pierce. His opting out put us in a bind. They traded for a fatty, but he failed his physical. The IDT is more about Pierce opting out than not having a plan, for this offseason at least.

IOL. I wonder if they seriously miscalculated thinking one or more players would step up in year two, which Zimmer referenced. As cheap Red McCombs said "Sometimes you gotta coach 'em up!". I'd say half the 'blame' is poor planning, a quarter potentially being less than stellar coaching, and a quarter being the virus which shortened coaching and practices.

Of the three positions, IOL is the one I would point fingers at being the most mismanaged. But we are also talking about LG, C, and RG. If Bradbury shows improvement, that's still both G spots whereas with WR and DT (with Pierce) we are talking one spot.

And just how many receptions has Jefferson contributed?

LOL okay so the season hasn't started ... I'm not being completely fair. But what is our expectation ... Bisi like numbers from last year or slightly above? Even if we remove the Covid / shortened camp from the equation, drafting a rookie WR at 22 (i.e., not a top ten pick blue chipper) to contribute heavily that season is neither a good post-Diggs strategy nor the ideal situation for Jefferson.

Irv looking better in camp? I agree and that could really help.

An 'improving' Sharpe? I have not heard that but I stand corrected if you have.

I have heard that Bisi is ready to contribute more, IMO he will have to make a giant step to alleviate some of the attention on Thielen.

I guess we have tried to pull resources as best we can to fill the Diggs void, short of signing a starting caliber veteran which we simply didn't have the cap flexibility to do (Ndakoue be dammed). Still, if it were me I would be going over cut-down veterans with a radioactive scouring brush, trying to add some last-minute zing to the situation.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/4/2020 8:24:39 PM)

It seems to me that when they draft offensive linemen they were good selections, (we were all happy) but still they didn't turn out. On one hand it feels like they must not be good at developing them. On the other hand, they have a unique kind of blocking scheme that has such specific demands. O'Neill seems to be able to thrive with it, though. Bradbury and Cleveland were both high selections with the traits recognized as perfect for our scheme. Hopefully given time they will blossom. Elflein is a real disappointment. I wonder if there is something internally going on with him. He got injured and he never was the same. Maybe it relates to that. The team has made changes with the offensive line coaching staff. Once the coach died and the scheme has been adjusted a bit. I don't really know enough about offensive line play to understand what the heck is happening, but I have heard that sometimes it takes time to work well as a unit. There have been changes in personnel and the players this season have been moved from one place to another ostensibly to where they are a better fit. That implies that they played before where they weren't such a great fit. It feels like that is happening to Cleveland this year. Oli Udoh looks like a gem that needs polishing. I'm disappointed that they are not finding a way for him to start. Maybe he still will.

I'm greedy. I don't just want a good team. I want the Vikings to be Super, so I hope they figure things out. If they don't start out well, I will take into account that they haven't had a normal preseason schedule and still hope that they get better as the season progresses. I always want to be hopeful, but certainly I will be looking for indications that there is a basis for my hopes and like all of us I am capable of feeling disappointment.

Congrats for being on a podcast. When you said Riley "Rife" it told me that you don't
really follow the Vikings very closely. Not knowing how to pronounce the name of a
player you are critiquing or discussing is pretty sad. When the other guy mentioned that
we'll be running the ball 2 out of 4 plays every series, I realized that he is not aware of
other options that the NFL allows such as punting. I won't comment on your choice of the
Lions to win the North [&:] I hope you do well in your podcast endeavors and I would kindly
recommend that you both learn a little bit more about what you're talking about. It makes
it more interesting to listen to. If, however, this is the best that you both want to do, then
it is an embarrassment to Viking fans everywhere

[:D]
What the hell I'm going to listen to it until I fall asleep. I don't hate the first couple minutes. I'll listen until I fall asleep.
I finished it. Not a bad job at all. Brad being Brad picking the Lions to win the division, but as good as most of these podcasts I've heard.

I am sure that Brad appreciates that. What I saw was two guys having fun and not taking themselves too seriously, making an occasional solid point about the upcoming season. Rumor has it he appears in about five of the episodes for a show that won a Sports Emmy for season four.

Surprised they didn't try another depth CB (like Harrison Hand) at safety, but might not have been possible with the short preseason.

Bradbury was a very high pick. For him to be the worst starting C in the league last season is not a very promising sign. Not saying he can't/won't improve.

I'm not throwing in the towel on Udoh or Clev and with the shortened camp it's somewhat understandable. But Dozier and Elf aren't good players. Both are at the bottom rung in pass pro so not beating either of these two out doesn't bode well.

Then we have Spielman's past track record drafting olineman to consider. I'd list the 8 years of futility but I don't want anyone throwing up in their mouth this morning.

I hope these players will be good. But the jury is still out and in no way shape or form can you say with any certainty their all going to be good. That's the purple goggles talking.
