The #Vikings drafted six players in the sixth and seventh round this year. None of them made the 53-man roster.

Blake Brandel, Josh Metellus, Nate Stanley, Brian Cole II, and Kyle Hinton were cut. Kenny Willekes is on IR.

Only one of 12 UDFAs made the team: WR Dan Chisena.

That's why teams trade up instead of down. memo to Spielman

Those players could go PS and eventually be big contributors. [:D]

True. Most of the 6 or7 round picks are not expected to make a good team ... the go to the practice squad to be developed.

Glad we hoarded those picks instead of targeting someone like Bartch (sp)
. 🙄 😕

If Ezra really showed progress at LG, then it makes sense to cut Collins. If not and our only options at LG are Dozier or a rookie that has struggled [:-]

All I took from reports from Camp was that both Cleveland and Reiff were pretty abysmal when moved to guard.

I wish there had been preseason games. We heard Cleveland struggled at Guard and Samia supposedly did not look that good and Collins was battling for a starting spot and Collins gets cut and Samia is still there (Ezra was never getting cut as a 2nd Rounder).

???

And players are developed from the later rounds because it really helps managing the salary cap. Those players can help with the depth of the roster and in particular are often the players counted on for special teams. Once in a while those players can develop into something special- especially offensive linemen. I mean, two of our later picks were tackles converted to guards for the NFL. (Brandel and Hinton) Most offensive linemen have to be developed because the college game is so different from the Pro game.

If we manage to keep Collins on the PS and one of our starting guards gets hurt and they promote Collins to play instead of Cleveland or Samia then we have to know that they truly were struggling. I believe that may very well be the case.

This might be the biggest area where COVID had an impact. Less time for the late rounders. And coaching wanting players with experience in the system. Absolutely Spielman drives me crazy sometimes with his late round picks. Last year's draft - it's still early but if Oli and Watts become the players they are on the trajectory for, it would be hard to argue against the process.

Of the picks for this year - I still really like Hinton's athletic profile. Willekes will have a red shirt year. We'll see.

here is the only RotoWorld report I found on Bartch

BEN BARTCH
T, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Jaguars signed fourth-round OT Ben Bartch to a four-year contract.
Bartch (6'5"/309), a converted D-III tight end who has since bulked up from 210 points in his senior year of high school, made 27 starts at left tackle in his final two seasons with the St. John Johnnies before turning heads with a successful Senior Bowl week. While his technique is impressively sound for someone relatively new at the position, there are concerns he won't be able to compensate for his weaknesses — trouble at contact, feeble one-on-one drive, core strength issues — at the next level. The NFL will present competition the likes of which Bartch has never seen but his promising building blocks could entrench him as a starter on the right side if he can develop.

Clowney signs for 1 yr 12M

Better run defender - Yannick the better pass rusher.

Definitely worth a debate; Yannick vs Clowney + 2nd round pick.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2020 7:45:28 AM)

Adrian Peterson is signing a one-year deal with the #Lions, sources tell me and
@RapSheet

(Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

I wonder if he will get on the field that much.

Assuming he would want to come here.

If reports were accurate, he turned down some 17-18M per year deals.

Kind of Sprewell like.

ADRIAN PETERSON
RB, DETROIT LIONS

Lions signed RB Adrian Peterson to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
Peterson knows OC Darrell Bevel from their days in Minnesota. He joins a crowded backfield in Detroit, but Peterson gives the Lions a veteran presence that can help on early downs. Peterson signing is bad news for the Week 1 status of D'Andre Swift (leg) and Bo Scarbrough (undisclosed).

To me this means 2 things. Swift's injury may be more significant than the Lions are acting like it is and they don't have as much faith in Kerryon as I thought they did.

Clowney actually signing for $15 million. Not the 12 originally reported.

JADEVEON CLOWNEY
DL, TENNESSEE TITANS

Titans signed DL Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year, $15 million contract.
Clowney got more than the $12 million that was first reported. This looks highly incentivized, but it's a good deal for Clowney after going unsigned through training camp. Clowney had only three sacks in an injury-filled 2019, but he gives Tennessee a quality edge rusher. With seven days before the start of the season, Clowney isn't a lock to be active in Week 1.

Definitely open for debate, but Clowney would have had to want to come here and would have cost the extra $3 Million. Clowney the better run defender, but Ngakoue is the better pass rusher.

Most people IMO would consider the Titans a more likely title contender than us. Also Tennessee is not Minnesota Winter.

Looks like the #Vikings are up to about $6MM in salary cap space after the cutdown to 53.

Sounds about right. Ngakoue used almost all we had, but we got $5 million from the Reiff pay cut.

The comparatively low contracts these players are signing for recently demonstrate that holding out during a COVID19 economy probably wasn't a great idea.

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard somewhere that any player holding out this season has a lot less rights to getting paid. I'm not sure on the specifics, but somehow they made it very difficult for players to hold out this season.

Anybody got anything on that?

Just a guess. If you needed this season to get to FA status(like Cook), you need to have so many games to count as a season.

No guarantee that there will be a full season. It might be done by Week 8 if a huge outbreak.

Also, if I was one of these guys in line for a big payday, I would take as much guaranteed money as I can get right now. Salary cap going down next year.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2020 9:51:46 AM)

So what safeties should the Vikings bring in as depth?

Realistic (not Earl Thomas) options include:
HaHa Clinton-Dix
Damarious Randall
Sean Davis
Jonathan Cyprien
Adrian Colbert
George Iloka

I hope they go after Sean Davis — elite athlete, played FS and SS for the Steelers.

(Krauser on Twitter)

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2020 9:54:51 AM)

There was a restructure in the CBA more or less eliminating any hold outs by not giving players an accrued season if they didn't show on time for training camp.

However, if the player plays 6 games he's credited with an accrued season. So Cook could play the first 6 games and then go home.

If the season is cancelled due to the covid all players will be credited with an accrued season after 1 game.

It may be hard to get a quality vet to come sit behind two of the best safeties in football. This is maybe why you don't swap out Epps for Sendejo, unless they just didn't like him that much.
