The Vikings drafted 12 players in 2019 and 15 in 2020.

• 18 (9 each year) made the roster
• 4 are on the practice squad
• 2 are on IR: Willekes and Cam Smith
• 1 lost to waivers: Marcus Epps made the Eagles roster
• 2 are out of the picture: Dillon Mitchell and Brian Cole

Apperently Connelly will be part of the 53 man roster, not the practice squad.

#Vikings waive Hardy Nickerson to make room for Ryan Connelly.

Chris Tomasson

He’s a guy who can’t cover and has an injury history. Torn ACL, I think. We only have two safeties. Why didn’t we address that?

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2020 1:10:54 PM)

I'm reading that there are three more openings for practice squad players. Also, still no additions to the safeties on the 53 man roster. My theory is that they will bring back one or two of their safeties that they cut, but the reason they are doing this is to protect their rookie defensive linemen drafted in the fourth round.

Apparently Connelly is good on special teams. Most likely better than Nickerson at that.

I also read that he was injured, but has recovered. Perhaps that's why the Giants thought he could make it to their practice squad.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2020 2:42:55 PM)

Connelly ran a 4.66 sec forty at the combine.

What bothers me the most about him is he chose the Badgers over Gophers. But the Gophers were a complete mess back then

Not many recover from a torn ACL in less than a year. My guess is a red shirt year. Not sure if he's worth it.

Dan Duggan, who covers the Giants for The Athletic, called Connelly the "biggest cut surprise" when New York's 53-man roster was announced.

https://www.vikings.com/news/5-things-to-know-about-new-vikings-lb-ryan-connelly

"A 2019 fifth-round draft pick, Connelly played four games – making three starts – for the Giants last season before suffering a torn ACL. Over those first four outings, he recorded 20 tackles (league stats), a sack and two passes defensed. He also nabbed interceptions off Jameis Winston and Case Keenum in Weeks 3 and 4, respectively."

Interecepting Winston and Keenum too easy and doesn't count. [&:]

Nick Olson@NickOlsonNFL
Most of the NFL bases out of 11 personnel (3 WRs, 1 TE & 1RB), but last year under Stefanski, with Thielen banged up and limited WR depth, the Vikings only deployed it 25% of the time, by far the fewest in the NFL.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2020 3:11:15 PM)

Source said 7 other teams offered center Brett Jones, who was released Saturday, a spot on their practice squad before he decided to sign with #Vikings practice squad for $12,000 a week. He will see how it goes. Vikings can protect him up to 4 times this season from other teams.

Chris Tomasson

I saw one other report that the Vikings will probably put Hardy Nickerson Jr. on the practice squad, as well. Which leaves one other spot. The Vikings are reportedly going to wait until tomorrow when they can reassess and perhaps select a newly waived player from today.

overthecap has them at about $6m, while spotrac is at $2.2m - i wonder if spotrac includes bonuses that otc doesn't?...also, i didn't see any numbers adding the ps to the totals....

otc and spotrac always seem to be different....

The Linebacker we claimed Ryan Connelly may be healthy now, but had a torn ACL early last football season. He was a 5th round pick last year and played well in the first 4 games before the ACL injury. He has been practicing. Here's a link regarding him from Vikings.com

Wow. The amazing thing is that the Vikings were like 25th in line to get him, so he did almost clear waivers. The other thing that is amazing was that only 17 players were claimed by other teams. That is about half of the usual. This is not the usual off-season, but it did just happen to be that linebacker and safety were the two positions that the Vikings were most interested in finding backup help. So the Vikings got a fourth rounder in Troy Dye this off-season and now Conelly, a promising fifth rounder from just a year ago was picked up. Our linebacker reserves were thin, but now it has been fortified for sure.

Spoiler alert-

If you go back and look at this site a few years ago it said the almost identical thing about how big of a mistake the Giants made by releasing BRETT JONES.

Hope they’re right about Conelly.

Not identical ... a vet with starting C experience signed to be depth vs essentially a rookie that flashed very well before an injury who may or may not be more than depth. Plus we traded for Jones.

Although Connolly and Jones have nothing to do with eachother’s situation, fans react to releasing /adding players pretty similarly from team to team.

Thanks Tom. I thought we traded for Jones. This Connelly, as a rookie 5th round pick, earned a starting job by week 2 last year. That's impressive. I was mildly psyched for Jones I admit. I'm a little more psyched for Connelly. Tomorrow more dust will settle and we will hopefully get a better picture of what we got. Go Vikings. [:D]

Taking QB out of the calculation, the Vikings are the fourth youngest team in the NFL. Also, check out how significant undrafted free agents are.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/7/2020 7:40:40 AM)

As I've been saying for years, the draft means almost nothing after the fourth round. Previous to the 2020 draft, the Vikings had selected 31 guys in the previous five drafts ('15-'19) in the final three rounds. Only six of those guys will be on the 2020 roster and only one of them will start (Bisi Johnson). The best guy we drafted was Stephon Diggs, who is now gone. And the longer it goes, even less guys show up on the roster. From drafts 2015-17, there is only one guy remaining from the final three rounds of the draft (Odenigbo). 1-for-18.

So the next time we hear that the Vikings are trading down in the draft, lets not pretend that gold was discovered once they make the pick.

I'll take quality over quantity any day of the week, especially on draft day.

Last few rds are pretty much nothing more than depth and ST's players. Most of these plethora of late rd picks Spielman accumulates are at the expense of rd 3 trade backs.

Spielman must believe in long shots. Cuz he takes a lot of them.

If the guy whiffs in the first round (Treadwell, Waynes, etc..), what makes you think he's going to find gold in the 5th through 7th? That's my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

As I see it, no guys we drafted in 2016 are still on the roster. 0-for-8. Maybe I'm missing something. The guy makes Miguel Sano look like Ted Williams. Either he's got the toughest job on the planet, or he's really incompetent.
