Terry Stoneberg -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 8:00:29 AM)

I haven't seen the analysis by other more discerning eyes, but I have to say I expected our run game would struggle last night. After 2 games like the Pack and the Lions, any DC worth his salt would devise a scheme against the Vikes that basically would stop the run at all costs and force Cousins and our receiving core to beat them. And that's essentially what the Bears did. They have a good to great front 7 and didn't even trust that, putting 8 in the box on almost all running plays and some of the passing plays. In addition the Bears banked on penetration stopping Cook before he could get started, leaving the short range pass uncovered and The trade off was receivers running free in the secondary and more time than typical for Cousins to get the ball to them. I would like to have seen some reverses to attack that penetration but I understand why you would respect the Bears recovery speed and not risk it.

Not to criticize our coaching staff, after all we won the game, but if Bellichick were our coach, I would bet we would have passed the ball 20 straight times against a defense like that. Our WRs could have helped us more than they did. The Theilen muff/interception should never have happened. I suspect he'll be on the juggs machine retraining himself to catch with his hands away from his body after he sees the film. I thought the Rudolf fumble was a very iffy call, in spite of the announcers and the judgement from NY. But we survived those turnovers with some good ones of our own.

Speaking of the announcers (maybe you had better ones locally), here in VA, they sounded like Bears fans working really hard to try to seem impartial. And was this had to be the D, E, or Fteam. For a nationally televised game I expected a more "known" crew.

Terry Stoneberg -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 8:06:27 AM)

Oh, and one more thing. Cudos to the OLine coaching staff. There is no question that we've been upgraded there. I know it is the nature of this board to slam the GM for not committing more 1st round picks to the OLine, and to see progress as always just getting better personnel, but you can't have top flight talent at every position, some places you just have to coach them up. To me it's obvious that is happening to the OLine in Minnesota.

bstinger -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 8:11:11 AM)

Playoff picture:

We are 4-5 with 7 games left. 5 of the 7 look pretty winnable. Games against the Saints and Buccaneers not so much, but that can change with injuries and such.

Let's say we win all those games we should win, that makes us 9-7.

The most likely way to get in is to to catch either Arizona or LA Rams. They are both 6-3. Seattle is also 6-3 but they beat us so they have a tie breaker and they have the easiest remaining schedule of the 3. Not going to try and project tie breakers right now, but to outright beat them, one of them has to go 2-5 the rest of the way.

The Rams have
Bucs
49ers
Cardinals
Pats
Jets
Seattle
Cardinals

The Cardinals have
Seahawks
Pats
Rams
Giants
Eagles
49ers
Rams

Seattle has
Cardinals
Eagles
Giants
Jets
Washington
Rams
49ers

Both the Cardinals and Rams have some tough games but they also have some cupcakes. They face each other twice, we need one team to sweep the other and that team to lose at least one cupcake game.

Our odds aren't good at this point but it's nice to be in the conversation.

Cleveland's presence in the lineup has helped, no doubt. Guys that had to cover for Samia' struggles can do their own jobs now. Cleveland isn't all pro, but an upgrade from worst in the NFL is noticeable.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 8:20:42 AM)

Kirk Cousins leads the NFL in yards per completion by a lot. So much so that he also leads the NFL in

-- yards per attempt despite ranking 20th in completion percentage.

-- net yards per attempt despite also ranking 22nd in sack rate.

Still stares down receivers way too much

Thielen's 2nd TD, he was all he looked at.

Had a good night overall. Still makes one uneasy waiting for the bad to happen, since he's self-destructed so many times.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 8:39:28 AM)

Is the roll INTO pressure, on purpose?
Because I need that explained to me
His field of vision and smoothest escape, as a RH QB, is to the right.
He refused to use it last night, and it appeared open to me.
Was puzzling.

Best hope in this scenario is to cheer HEAVILY against the Rams. I could see Seahawks going 12-4 and the Cardinals(coming off the miracle) at 11-5.

Seems like a helluva leader
Love the loud assignment calls before each play
OLines need that type, he seems to be a guy who could settle in for a decade

The objective in the offseason was to improve from Elf and Kline. The answer was to go with Elf and Kline's backup.

Drew Brees And Tom Brady are following the Favrey path..

Play until you get beat the fuq up, over and over and over..

Then do commercials for Copper Fit....

He had a real head scratcher last night.

Right as the announcers sere commenting on what a huge, clean pocket he had, he ducked and rolled to his left and almost slammed into his O-lineman and a defender. I think he threw it away right after that.

Completely changes the way your other facets HAVE to play.
Its maddening.
We start making strides in these other areas, and then ST just falls into shreds.

I will never understand why you would roll to your blind side..

You can’t see wtf is going on!!

It’s not called the blind side for chits and grins...

Well I've definitely been proven wrong about Cousins, Zimmer and Spielman for the time being.
I'm still skeptical. It's been a nice run, but as you point out, TB and NO will be really tough games.
Both have legit D's and way more offense than a Chicago for sure.
Giving up 99 yard drive to Wilson and falling a part vs Atl will likely come back to haunt this team.

Got to give Zimmer a lot of credit for this D lately. Good to see him utilize the fast/active LBers.
But still wonder why in hell they resigned Barr. He has always been overrated. I'd take Wilson in a heartbeat, and it's not even close.

Atrocious.

• Kicking to Patterson.
• How do you have a guy on the punt team, with plenty of time, down the ball with his heel clearly on the line?
• Saving grace was the totally unforced muff that we recovered.

Not to mention the last punt of the game. Angle kicking it out around the 10 or kicking short and high. That's what other teams do. This bunch is just happy not to get it blocked in that situation.

HERCULES!!

Eric Thompson@eric_j_thompson
Over the past 3 weeks, Hercules Mata'afa and D.J. Wonnum have 21 total pressures, getting pressure on 9.8% and 9.2% of their pass rushing snaps, respectively. They're both in the top 10 in pressure rate of edge rushers that have played at least 50 snaps over the past three weeks.

PFF MIN Vikings@PFF_Vikings
Grades are live! The highest graded #Vikings on defense from MNF are:

Anthony Harris 81.7

Hercules Mata'afa 78.2

Harrison Smith 77.1

Eric Wilson 74.5

Kris Boyd 71.7
