Our special teams are at an all-time low - and that is saying A LOT.

Atrocious.

• Kicking to Patterson.
• How do you have a guy on the punt team, with plenty of time, down the ball with his heel clearly on the line?
• Saving grace was the totally unforced muff that we recovered.

Colquit's net punting average is currently dead last in the league. In fact he's #35. FG and PAT kicking is about all we have going for us.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 11:27:02 AM)

The Ravens called the Vikings about Yannick Ngakoue and struck a deal.

Suddenly, the competition was wide open.

For the next three weeks, Mata’afa joined this party. He hadn’t played much edge rusher, staying mostly inside. He had tried linebacker for a few OTAs his rookie year but never as a hand-in-the-dirt edge rusher. The Vikings took a liking to this and activated him for their Week 8 game in Green Bay. He wasn’t fully promoted to the roster, but instead played as one of their COVID-19 exempt activations for the game. He played outside for 26 of his 32 snaps on defense. Those snaps went well, resulting in four pressures, including this heroic one:

quote:

This was such a massive sequence in this one. 37 seconds left, Mata'afa gets pressure which forces Rodgers to throw in bounds, clock keeps moving, Packers can't get set and blow like 10 seconds and the next play is the strip sack.

The Vikings promoted Mata’afa to the proper active roster on Nov. 6, just 24 days after his initial release and the clown emoji debacle. After a position switch, a social media hurricane, a firing and a re-hiring, Mata’afa was on the Vikings once again. And this time, he was in direct competition for a starting role. On Sunday’s game against the Lions, Mata’afa rotated with Holmes and Odenigbo, taking 27 defensive snaps. On those, he logged three more pressures and a split sack with Shamar Stephen.

I wonder if we have taken Boyd and Wilson off special teams because they are starting. That would hurt.

27 plays, three pressures and half a sack. He also seemed to me in the mix on several other plays when he was in. He appears to be very comfortable coming off the edge.

If Hercules and Wonnum continue their play, it makes the offseason very interesting.

As strapped as we are, if Hunter does make a big deal about wanting a new deal, you have to consider moving him.

It's interesting Ngakoue has turned into a part time player with Baltimore as LBer in the 3-4
Granted they have a ton of talent in their front 7, but maybe Zimmer concluded he's just not that good.

I think LB position will be interesting. I say dump Barr(even with dead cap hit) and pay Wilson.

Hunter is so dominant I'd be VERY reluctant to move him...
BUT
If you were able to go up and get a QB in this next draft by trading him... I'd reluctantly do it.

It just sucks we payed such a premium to find out... compounded by really needing draft capital if you want to go after a QB in the draft... which is probably just a pipe dream of mine.

If Hunter plays for his contract, then yeah. But if the rumbling about him wanting to be the highest paid defensive player in the game are true, I move him and sign Odenigbo to a reasonable deal.

Barr needs to move on. But I'm not convinced Zim will be willing to let that happen.

Arlowe84 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 11:58:24 AM)

Still think you could have Barr put on 10 lbs and play him at DE.

Always thought he was out of position as LBer in 4-3

Basically 10 lbs and he's the same size as Doleman.
Could see him having a very productive next 5 years.

Zim seems convinced that he's vital in defending TEs...

Arlowe84 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 12:08:45 PM)

One of the most disappointing misses by Zimmer

System Fit

It's important not to overthink Anthony Barr's schematic fit. His raw hand usage and thinner body type could encourage teams to play him off the ball, but they should not. As an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense or edge player in hybrid defenses, he can be a terror rushing the passer off the edge. That's where he makes the biggest difference.

Arlowe84 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 12:09:40 PM)

Pass Rushing

Getting to the quarterback is where Barr's athletic talents will be best put to use in the NFL. It all starts with a quick first step and devastating speed. When Barr has a speed advantage on the edge, he's able to flatten out and turn the corner with flexibility.

Arlowe84 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 12:10:20 PM)

Pass Coverage

Coverage value isn't the main appeal for any team that drafts Barr. Nevertheless, his ability to do it makes a difference. The fluidity of his movement on overall agility make it comfortable for him when it comes to dropping from the line of scrimmage into zone coverage. The baseline traits it takes to do it are all there. As Barr improves his coverage instincts and anticipation skills, he can become a trusted coverage guy when he drops a handful of times per game.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 12:15:17 PM)

The #Vikings' playoff chances didn't bump much on FO with a win last night---moving from 17% last week, to just 19% this week.

Still need a lot of help from the remaining teams facing the NFC West.

(Purple Post on Twitter)

Of course if our team had lost last night the odds would have dropped significantly. If we are to move up more appreciably, I think the Vikings need to win and some of those teams ahead of them need to lose. Teams like the Rams, Cardinals, Seahawks, Saints and Bucs. The good thing for the Vikings is that they play both the Saints and the Bucs. Those games may have a lot of playoff implications.

It's possible... but I haven't seen it...
Wilson is already getting to the QB with more consistency than I've seen Barr do since his rookie year.

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/17/2020 12:24:50 PM)

On PFF you can look at coverage vs receiving on a game-by-game and player-specific basis. Except for weeks 1 and 6 where Wilson didn't defend any pass plays to TEs, all the other weeks he has his highest coverage rankings vs TEs and vs some of the best TEs he has extremely high ratings. Like I've said before, the dude doesn't tackle very well but seems to excel at nearly every other aspect of LB - to the point where a missed tackle here and there will be overshadowed by turnovers, sacks, and good coverage.

This is what I heard from Matthew Coller. The trade is a big-time fail in the pro personnel scouting. You only make that trade if you plan to extend him at a high salary; figuring out after you've got him that he's not worth it is inexcusable.

Smaller sample size, but Wilson projected over 87 games would be 34 sacks, 10 FF, 68 QB hits, 39 PD, 29 INT's. Over time, I doubt he would get to those totals because they would game plan for him.
