Rapoport: NFL Salary Cap could drop by $40 million for the 2021 season...thedailynorseman

Rapoport is reporting that the salary cap for the NFL for the 2021 season could decrease by as much as $40 million per team. In highfalutin financial terms, that’s a hell of a lot. A $40 million per team drop would be a combined loss of $1.28 billion. . .with a “b”. . .across the NFL. That would mean a whole lot of high-priced names would be getting cut loose and there wouldn’t be a whole lot of money for them to sign big deals elsewhere.

Right now, the salary cap stands at $198,200,000 per team. If the cap does drop by $40 million per team, that would put things at $158,200,000. Based on that figure, according to the folks from Over the Cap, there are 21 teams that are already over the 2021 salary cap based on the money they’ve already committed, including every team in the NFC North.

As of now, according to OTC, the Vikings have a cap figure of $182,026,119 for the 2021 season. Obviously there’s money that could probably be moved around and what have you, but the Vikings would have to create about $24 million worth of space just to maintain the status quo. That’s no mean feat, even for a wizard like Rob Brzezinski.

Ouch. This probably answers the question on whether Harris and Cook get long-term deals. Not looking good.

You will almost certainly see mass renegotiations. All teams will be in the same boat, and there just won't be $ available to players who get cut, their best bet will be to renegotiate.

It wouldn't surprise me if there is an adjustment to current contracts based on the reduced revenues through a negotiation with the NFLPA.

Good thing they(NFL and NFLPA) just agreed on a 10 year deal. Or Strike would be inevitable.

Probably have to start getting in bed with China like the NBA to recoup losses.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/5/2020 7:19:38 AM)

Not that I think Zim should be fired. i just thought this really summerised Zim's tenure thus far.

Mike Zimmer has coached the Vikings for six seasons and is going on his seventh. In that span, he molded the defense to his liking and eventually was able to get the offense to be almost as equal a strength. The team has had plenty of success in his tenure but only reached the NFC Championship once, and got blown out in that contest.

While Zimmer will be seen as one of the more successful coaches in Vikings’ history, perhaps it’s just time for a change. Some things haven’t gotten any better in Zimmer’s run with the team and it’s worth wondering if they ever will.

As stated above, the team struggles on the road, they can’t win in primetime, and they usually lose against teams who have winning records. They also often seem underprepared for big games, and rarely win on when the spotlight is on them. That just might be what Zimmer teams do, and nothing will change that.

Sensible reply in the comments:

Rob P • a day ago
No doubt Zimmer has become a very good head coach since coming to Minnesota. He has made his fair share of mistakes along the way but I believe that is mostly part of the learning process. I suspect the Wilfs are holding out on Zim in part due to his past mistakes and the DeFilippo firing. The Wilfs criticized Zims' vetting of DeFilippo for the job suggesting he should have been more thorough. There also seems to be a perception that Zim failed to clearly communicate his grievances with DFlip before firing him during the 2018 season. That left the team in a lurch and were basically forced to promote Stefanski to OC at that time. That in turn forced the Vikes to make a decision in 2019 to either retain Stefanski as OC or go outside of the organization. They brought in coaches Kubiak and Dennison to assist/babysit Stefanski in 2019.

It is unclear how much credit Stefanski should receive for the offensive successes in 2019. The fact is he is gone now and Kubiak and company are now in complete control of the offense. That brings me to the next reason why Zim hasn't been extended yet. The Wilfs are in an excellent position to pivot away from Zim if Kubiak wants to be HC next year. Kubiak's old buddy, Wade Phillips, would be waiting in the wings to take over the DC role and bring in his own defensive staff.

I think it would be a big mistake to let Zim go. He is simply one of the best defensive minds in the League and his positives far outweigh any of his negatives.

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/5/2020 9:32:53 AM)

Big year for Zimmer, we will find out if they are just spinning their wheels, regressing, or moving forward.

I tend to think he has had his shot, really don't want a rebuild with Speilman at the controls again.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/5/2020 10:21:54 AM)

Can't believe articles don't check facts like:

Why did Kubiak retire twice?
Kubiak's health?

No way will Kubiak be a head coach again.

I don't know if Randy could save MNF, but he would be really good in the booth. He has the charisma, is likeable, and knows the game really well. But really, after Tessitore, Witten, and Booger, anyone would seem better to me.

The Athletic laid off a lot of writers today. I've often thought about subscribing, but haven't yet. Can any subscriber comment on their Viking (or MN sports in general) coverage, e.g., is it worthwhile in terms of quality/unique content vs. free alternatives?

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/5/2020 2:46:49 PM)

It is a big year for the vikes/zimmer. I do love the current set-up with Zimmer & Kubiak as the leaders of the Offense and Defense. If Dennison and Kubiak can figure out the right line combination, I think we win the division. I trust them to do so because of their past successes. Plus we have more talent there than we've had in a long time. Young and unproven for sure but with Cleveland, Collings, Udoh and Samia - I think we can figure it out. I also think we've got a lot of CB options.

With the salary cap next year - I think we gotta cut Reiff and rollover hit 11M in savings (which would put us 50 M below the cap with only Cook & Harris to resign). I'd use some of that to get ONeil under contract. He & his agent might be willing to sign sooner with all the uncertainty.

Draft S and TE early next year and we've got enough young talent to develop and stay competitive imo.

I subscribe. I got a huge discount last year and let the subscription roll over at full price because it's a high-quality site in general. It helps that the Vikings writers are pretty good (Arif is one) and the Clippers writer is really good, and those are the teams I follow closely. Several national writers are also top-notch. They spent a lot of money to hire good writers, often luring them away from local dailies as well as high-end national sites. This did hurt a lot of local papers, which I'm not crazy about. But overall I've gotten very good value, especially from the NBA/Clippers content.

I really don't. There was, I believe, a Los Angeles NBA guy that seemed to write about both; he was among the laid off. He was so-so. Don't know about the Lakers guy, but most of their NBA coverage is good to great.

Inking O'Neal early is a real good idea. need to get back to doing that so we don't get in the harris type situation.

I really think our CB play will be improved from last season. I mean how couldn't it? Rhodes and Waynes didn't exactly set the bar very high. more like a speed bump.

Agreed - we should have signed Harris before last year. We could have gotten him for 4 yr/20 M I bet. I'm not excited about extending him at this point anymore.

I think our CB will improve too. It's a lot like the oline - talented room with Hill, Hughes, Gladney, and Dentzler.

Draft S and TE early next year and we've got enough young talent to develop and stay competitive imo.

Again, Harris' agent made it clear that Harris was not going to resign and instead test free agency.
