Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/23/2020 12:38:18 PM)

It looks like to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that Jeff Gladney is the only player remaining to be signed.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/23/2020 12:45:44 PM)

It seems that I'll have to wait until Monday for practice reports.

All players were scheduled to undergo coronavirus tests Thursday, take Friday and Saturday off and then have additional tests Sunday. Those with two negative tests will move forward on Monday.

Let's hope he gets in soon. The young guys are going to need every day they can get, just to get acclimated to the surroundings and expectations.

I always look forward to your reports, Bruce. I'm so glad you are feeling up to it!

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/23/2020 1:37:22 PM)

Agent Leigh Steinberg announced that fifth-round cornerback Harrison Hand has agreed to a four-year deal with the team. Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports that seventh-round safety Brian Cole has also agreed to his first NFL contract.

First-round cornerback Jeff Gladney and seventh-round defensive end Kenny Willekes are the remaining unsigned picks in Minnesota.

Tom Pelissero@TomPelissero
Negotiations are fluid, but NFL owners continue to push for an agreement to lower the salary cap in 2020 and 2021 — proposals the NFLPA and GMs believe could lead to a rash of veteran cuts and restructures before this season, sources say.

The NFLPA wants to spread the financial hit through 2030, rather than taking it now. And even a $10 million reduction in the 2020 salary cap would be “too much” at this stage, one GM said. Rosters are largely set. Many teams would be scrambling to free up money somewhere.

[:-]

We made some tough choices in the offseason. Def gonna impact Cook and Harris. Might impact Reiff, Elf and others. Does it make the Vikings reconsider their out on Cousins - I believe a few days before the start of the next season we can get out of Cousin's contract with a 10M cap hit.

Even having a stagnant cap for the next 10 years is going to dramatically impact a lot of teams.

I always look forward to your reports, Bruce. I'm so glad you are feeling up to it!

Thank you. I'm repeating myself here, but when I was a teenager in the summer time I would wait for the newspaper to be delivered in the afternoon. I would eagerly check to see if there was anything in the sports section about the Vikings and more times than not there was not and it frustrated me. Sometimes there was a small article- a nothing burger with no meat in it. Now I'm so grateful for the internet and for the little nuggets that I can find now and then. For one thing we are not relying just on the newspaper and another thing is the information goes out immediately instead of waiting for the next days newspaper.

I know how you are because we are the same. It's slow this time of year, but we think about the Minnesota Vikings about 40 times a day. I'm grateful for this forum because we can bounce off of each others our thoughts and ideas. We are not the general manager or even a coach, but we can speak to each other as if everything was up to us. When I watch the game I feel that way. I get excited and cheer for the team as if they can hear me and can be spurred on by the vocal support. I try to remind myself when the Vikings lose that it's not my fault, but I take each win or loss personally as if I was a player on the team- as if I was responsible.

Am I right that we are the same? Fan is short for fanatic. I am a Vikings fanatic. My wife mocks me saying that I allow the Vikings to determine my mood. If they win I am happy and if they lose I am downtrodden. She has a point, but that's the way it is. If the Vikings ever win the Super Bowl we all will cherish that moment. It will be like the forbidden fruit that we could never eat, but when we do it will be so delicious. It feels that way to me sometimes. That fruit is too high on the tree for me to reach. But maybe this year will be different- even if there will be an asterisk applied to it. I will still take it.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/23/2020 7:22:05 PM)

I was surprised by some of the points made here. I don't know if he will be right on all of them. For example, I still think Dalvin will have a monster year.

Bleacher Report says Zimmer extended...

https://bleacherreport.com/minnesota-vikings

"The Minnesota Vikings and head coach Mike Zimmer are reportedly finalizing a multiyear contract extension."

"reportedly finalizing"

Not done yet!

I really don't understand that move at all. Zygi should tell him to make a meaningful playoff run and we can talk after the year.

I disagree. He has a great season and we haven't extended him he will go to the highest bidder. Good coach and better than what's available.

You think he'd leave the team he just built that finally had a meaningful playoff run? To go where? A 4-12 rebuilder? Not a chance. Management was holding all the leverage and they gave it away.

I believe in the virtue of good will. They perhaps could have beat up Zim on his price to continue, and I suppose he could have said that he will retire, but good will sometimes is more valuable than money. You want Zimmer to invest 110% and being that he is the head coach that will rub off on the team. A happy head coach sets the tone for the whole team. Besides, he is worth all that he could get. He's one of the best coaches we've ever had.

I find myself sweating each player's signing, especially now the cornerbacks, but I know that there's not much to it. They are locked in for a certain level of compensation and they want to play football. It's there first contract and they are looking forward to the money. It's a technicality that the team has to get through, though. I'm sure it will all happen in a timely way.

I'm happy that today is the day. Some people on Twitter have been counting down the number of days until the first game. I count down the number of days until training camp. I look forward to the eyewitness reports. It's no longer time for just speculation. We are going to get the substantial reports on how the players look, how they are doing and how they are progressing. I love it. It's my favorite time of the year.

DF he's already had 2 meaningful playoff runs and if not for a shanked 29 yard FG against Seattle he would have 3. If you don't consider finishing 3rd, 5th, and who knows what could have been meaningful I don't know what to say.
I'm fully with Bruce. This year might not be our year. We need time for the 15 draft picks to gel with the rest of the team. So if we don't have a meaningful playoff run this year I will still be glad that we have Zim because a title is coming soon.

You understand that 'finishing 3rd' and 'finishing 5th' are made up things by you right? I get your point in that you believe in Zim and think he's on track - and you may very well be correct - but making up things to bolster your argument probably works against you.

If only 2 teams finish ahead of us in the playoffs excuse me for saying we finished third. If only 4 teams finished ahead of us in the playoffs excuse me for saying we finished 5th. Nothing made up.

If we were fifth last year, it was a tie with three other teams. The draft picks are awarded in reverse order of success from the previous season, which includes the tie breakers of their win/loss records during the regular season. The Vikings were originally awarded the 25th pick in the draft which is the 8th worst pick in the round. So I think we can say tied for fifth, or eighth in the NFL, or tied for third in the NFC conference.

Do we know how many players were on the roster before we signed are draft picks?

I haven't seen anything regarding UDFA's being signed yet.

Let's say we were at 45-50 players. We still should have room for the UDFA's.

I guess we'd have the PS players as part of the 80. So

50
12 ps
15 draft picks
----
78

but the 50 carryover might be high. We did lose several players.

Last I heard we had 87 players including all of the UDFA's and other free agents, so 7 players have to be trimmed. I would have thought that it would have been disclosed yesterday. I suppose the team could actually pick up other players that are released by other teams and that might be what's holding up the announcement. We'll have to see how it shakes out.

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/24/2020 8:07:52 AM)

He isn’t saying we tied for 3rd or 5th. He’s saying we got 3rd and 5th like we got the bronze medal or some other thing that doesn’t exist. I’m not talking about a missed FG or any other circumstances of any game. I’m simply saying that there’s no 3rd place or 5th place in NFL football - which there isn’t. Did all the teams that missed the playoffs get 13th place? No. Because that is illogical in the same way it is to say your team got the highest possible rank of all the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the playoffs as your team. This is really simple and basic stuff here.

If your point is that the vikes have had some playoff success I’ll listen to that point. Just don’t paint the picture as better than it was.

all of our players aren't allowed to be in camp yet, so there are less than 80...i'm guessing that all of the udfa's were invited to rookie camp yesterday so we could test and get a look at them....

also, our drafted rookies and anyone else that was eligible probably showed up...if there's a player that tests positive or fails their physical for any reason we would not have committed to final 80 invites yet....

That makes sense. That would explain and thank you. They are not practicing, so any evaluation will have to be based on "how they look". I guess it's possible that one may fail their physical, but that is unlikely. Having Covid would be more possible and I guess they could be on IR for a couple of weeks in that case.

I'm just thinking this morning that there may be an UDFA that they coveted, but was sniped by another team. In the event that that player is released, the Vikings may make an effort to acquire him. That is probably unlikely too, though.

all of our players aren't allowed to be in camp yet, so there are less than 80...i'm guessing that all of the udfa's were invited to rookie camp yesterday so we could test and get a look at them....

also, our drafted rookies and anyone else that was eligible probably showed up...if there's a player that tests positive or fails their physical for any reason we would not have committed to final 80 invites yet....

That is probably unlikely too, though.

on the vikings.com web site, the roster still lists the full 87 - so, no decisions made yet....

When do they have to be at 80?

Or is that suppose to be the max to begin with?

It's only 3rd place if the the losers of the conference championship games play each other. It's only 5th place if the losers of the divisional round play each other. They don't. So there's no 3rd place or 5th place.

i'm going to give this one to kgdabom...i think he can legitimately say we were tied for 3rd/5th....

at the time, i felt like that game against Seattle at tcf bank stadium had the potential of being one of the greatest vikings' games ever - if we had won...playing against the seahawks, outdoors in frigid temperatures, a tough game-winning drive at the end of the game....i stood up and walked over to the tv as the field goal team set up on the field - i called my wife over to watch that last play, and well...whatever...can't blame Zimmer for that...he should have three playoff victories...the players seem to love him...he gave his right eye for the team....he's dating a bikini model....

Yup, the reversing of the draft order is a legitimate/sensible way to rank your teams performance for the previous year, vs the other teams in the league.
33 - draft position = your teams "place" for the previous season.
