People who vote for Trump this time around are either racists, xenophobes, sexists, homophobes, science deniers, etc, or they're willing to support a clear demagogue who embodies all of those things in order to get what they want. It may be law and order, abortion rights, financial considerations, etc, but the key is you have to say that whatever your thing is, it's more important than competence and the list of Trump attributes above. I get that some people may go that way, but it tells us a lot.....

Abortion is a very important issue to many people. they will overlook other flaws in a candidate.

There is something truly wrong with most of the human race that they allow helpless children to get slaughtered.

Many others our flat out sick of the career politician and simply want change.

If care for helpless children is their issue, then Trump is most decidedly NOT their guy. Torturing children at our southern border and now insisting that children go back to school during a pandemic - - - he's definitely not on board with taking care of babies or children.

I'm certainly not endorsing Trump. He's an idiot beyond anyone's wildest expectations.

The biggest problem is that each party puts winning above actually presenting us with a worthy candidate.

Absolute agreement. These two parties care nothing for our country and it's people. There is no hope for our future until these parties are taken down.

Even if you are disappointed with the current fruits of the two party system, political nihilism is not the answer. Engage, assess, analyze, and vote.

No. There is no hope for those parties. They are broken far beyond repair. We need new parties that actually care about our country and our people to rise to prominence. It's thinking that we have to choose from these two parties and vote for the lesser of two evils that is perpetuating them and their power.

You couldn't be more wrong. A defeatist attitude is that we're screwed unless we get new parties. The opposite of a defeatist attitude says that regardless of what you think of the parties, there are still good people within them. You have to have to find them. Hence, engage, assess, analyze, and vote. Be engaged. Use your vote. Make your parties better by doing your homework and getting involved. If a once in a generation Martin Luther type leading a new party emerged the Dem and Rep would unite to oust them. If they couldn't do it through their dirty politics they'd have him assassinated.

So no, there is not much hope anything will change.

All they care about is winning and perpetuating their power. The people need to see this and rise up against them with a third party that cares about doing the right thing.

Absolutely not defeatist. I'm talking about taking decisive action for change. Trying to fix these parties from within is like using a band-aid to treat a severed artery.

I'm saying it CAN BE DONE, but done from outside the parties not from within. Going to the polls and voting for either of these parties is an endorsement of them that I'm abhorrent to give. Honestly, my way of dealing with this is to actively not vote in protest of these institutions. So I'm probably not the best person to overthrow them. However, if opposition does arise I will jump on that bandwagon. Kind of like when I voted for Jesse the Body Ventura for Governator. He's proof it can be done.

Absolutely.

Biden is another old, white guy. He's not someone to be excited about.

But, Harris is.

Then it will the same shit bag with a new name. Change comes from holding individuals and parties accountable. If they aren't forced to reassess what they have become, it will continue regardless of what they call themselves.

If you want to generate a third party .... engage, assess, analyze, and vote. That is what you don't seem to get in this discussion. There is nothing defeatist in that mantra. bohumm didn't say engage, assess, analyze, and vote for selected party. He just said engage, assess, analyze, and vote.

It's very simple and it's the core component of change.

1. Plankton make up 95 per cent of ocean life
2. They form the base of aquatic food webs
3. They generate half of the atmosphere’s oxygen
4. They help absorb carbon emissions
5. But our increasing emissions are harming them

Shhhhhhhhh. Don't throw reality at the boy. He's got his hands full with COVID-19. Only one disaster at a time.

We have completely lost our way as a country. When you start putting your financial desires over the health and well-being of your kids and society, you have really failed miserably as a nation.

But, you have the other side pandering for votes without any regard for people's safety. Sitting on your hands watching a mob do 55B dollars in damage to a city and its people should automatically disqualify you from public office.

Public safety? Did a rash of people die from the public outcry I'm not aware of?

The public displays following the George Floyd saga were a result of two centuries worth of neglect. I would hardly put those issues on an even plain. $55-billion dollars in damages is a small price to pay for 200 years of neglect and social injustice. In the end, the country is better for it. Flags have been eliminated. Statues have been torn down. Reform has started. As I see it, well worth the money spent.

Not sure how any of it relates to plankton growth in the ocean. That was a weird response to the issue of global warming.

29 have died. And the majority of the USA is sick of the rioting.

I'm sure you don't hear about it in SoCal.

And like JBusse said, the alienation of the police has turned people away from the Far Left.

I would disagree. That may be what they are saying in your circles, but not what they are saying in mine.

Nothing has come in this country without sacrifice and political strife. The riots and civil unrest were a necessary evil.

The results coming in the fallout from the George Floyd case have changed our landscape forever. Statues have fallen. Flags have been changed. NBA players are no longer frowned upon for taking a knee during the anthem. Professional teams are wearing slogans on their jerseys. The Washington football team changed its name. Police departments are finally losing funding and revisiting protocols. Just to name a few.

It may have been uncomfortable for some and exposed the police forces nationwide for institutional issues, but it was needed. In what has been a disastrous 3.5 years, it was the one beacon of hope. Black people and white people walked arm-in-arm in uniting against 200+ years of oppression. I was inspired. It was the only positive thing about 2020.

Some of the protests were inspiring.

Burning up minority businesses, starting police stations on fire(if they burn alive, so be it), 29 lives taken, etc... These events overshadow the good.

I'd be inspired as a Viking Fan if all I watched was the highlight reel of 2019. No showing Elfy getting pancaked, Rhodes get burnt, Cousins fumbling.

Get back to me in 20 years on this. In 2040, short of the owners, nobody will remember one business that got burned. The good will far outweigh the bad. Not even close.

I'm sorry it saddened you. I'm sorry it was a disappointment to you. I'm sorry it stirred up emotions in you. But if you can't see the point of it all, you need to check your values. The buildings and businesses can be rebuilt. For George Floyd and many others, however, life ended as a result of ongoing corruption and lack of institutional control that has existed for over 200 years.

It was time! Enough with the fancy talk and promises by politicians. Take to the streets and let your actions be heard. It if makes people uncomfortable for a few weeks, so be it. The alternative was life as usual, which for many, was no longer an option.

2020 was a bad year for pacifists.

Send this post to the families of the 29 dead during the protests. You just gloss over that fact like it didn't happen.

Maybe you need to check your values.

What values are you talking about? Asking for a smoother, less 'messy' approach to social change?

Are you actually going to gloss over the social injustice of the last few hundred years to rail against the social unrest of the last two months?

Because 29 people have died / businesses and property have been damaged? Sure, those are incalculable losses to everybody closely involved. But weighing the last two months against the innumerable lives and families that have been destroyed throughout our history / are currently being destroyed as we speak ... is a very insulated and short-sighted calculation.

That's not about values, that's about being numb to the requirements of significant change.

100% Even if the incredibly unlikely event that term limits are installed it won't make one bit of difference unless the citizens get more involved and demand and enact change. The true rulers of USA, the mega-wealthy and their corporate conglomeration, have thousands of clones lined up to take the place of their current plants. They've given us the illusion of choice and have us fighting each other.
