Best thing they can do, I guess, is just hold tight and punt next year, and hope to attract 2-3 high end players with their cap room in 2 years.

Not really how LeBron planned to spend his time in LA

Lakers are in a super weird position for the next year or two.

They have 4 players alone that bring them near the luxury tax next season in LeBron, AD, Westbrook and THT.

Something called "Auston Reaves" is the only other guaranteed contract for next year. Nunn has a 5.2M Player option, Stanley Johnson has a 2.3M Team option. Mason Jones has a QO. That's the roster.

Technically Westbrook has a player option for next year, but I don't see him turning down 47M.

They have no 1st round picks. If they draw 1-10 it goes to NOLA, 11-30 it goes to Memphis. NOLA also has the option to swap picks in 2023. And then NOLA has their choice of the Lakers 2024 or 2025 pick (no protections).

Because of that 2024/2025 option, the earliest 1st rounder the Lakers can trade is 2027.

Can they dump AD who still has 3 years and 120M owed to him?

They could probably find a taker for Westbrook if they're willing to take back worse (ie: longer) deals. But without 1st round picks to attach to him, it'll be tough. And I doubt they want to muck up their future cap because in 2023/24, AD and THT are the only contracts currently on their books.

Per the last line, that's about it.

Strangely, they have gotten 'young' lately with Vogel playing Monk, Reaves, Stanley Johnson, and THT over Howard, Carmelo, and Ariza. It's not saying much.

It's more than hard to believe the Lakers have played as bad as they have this year. I can still see them go 4-1 to end the year though and make the playoffs. Bron and Davis will need to be at their best.

Elliot -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (4/8/2022 1:46:55 PM)

Personal opinion here, but I think if LeBron had not been nursing a tiny lead in the season scoring title, the Lakers would likely still have made the play-in tournament. I think he decided to sit in order to protect that tiny lead. He's the NBA's version of Wade Boggs.

Lakers need to identify some teams close to being a Championship contender but probably won't get over the top(Atlanta, Memphis, TWolves, 76ers, Mavs)

Trade LBJ and AD to a couple of these teams. Maybe get a couple young players, some expiring contracts, 2 or 3 first rounders and a lot of cap space.

That’s going to be tough. It’s so much outgoing salary. And few teams will have the room to absorb much of it.

And with LeBron only having 1 year left, he’s just a potential rental.

I don't even know how to go about gauging Davis' value.

Yup.

He's absolutely great when healthy - but that's getting less and less often.

And he's still owed 3 years and 120M.

Elliot -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (4/10/2022 7:05:33 AM)

With his 41-point performance against the Pacers, Embiid has overtaken LeBron for the league lead in scoring.

<edit> as it turns out, LeBron would have needed to play Friday night and today to reach the league minimum of 58 games. Since he's played in only 56 this year, his season point total would have to be divided by 58, which would have put him well below Embiid anyway.

Mark Anderson -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (4/10/2022 6:43:39 PM)

Philly LA trade

LBJ and Bazemore for Harden, Maxey and 1st Rounder

Dallas LA trade

AD for Dinwiddie, Powell, Bullock and two 1st Rounders

My 2nd favorite TEAM is up 3-0!!!

What a mess the Brooklyn franchise is.

They are the Lakers of the east.

Wow the Nets are about as dysfunctional as you can get.

Is Ben Simmons even interested in playing BB again?

Bill Jandro -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (5/6/2022 8:11:36 AM)

They did what I thought was an interesting exercise on the Greeny show the other day. Question was "how often has the 1st pick in the NBA draft been the best player?"

They went back 10 years not including the last couple drafts (too early to tell).

19 Zion..............Ja
18 Ayton............Doncic
17 Fultz..............Tatum
16 Simmons........Brown
15 KAT................Booker
14 Wiggins..........Embiid
13 Bennett..........Giannis
12 Davis.............Lilliard
11 Irving............Leonard
10 Wall...............George

Splitting hairs on a couple of them but for the most part the team with the 1st overall got it wrong. Sometimes really bad.

What the heck happened to the Suns!

Looking like Warriors to me for the Title, but the Celtics are looking better than I expected and could make it a competitive series.

Pauldiercks1 -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (6/1/2022 8:22:11 AM)

Yes back in the regular season, when the Celtics destroyed the Wolves, I looked over and told my wife that the Celtics are a legitimate title contender and likely my pick in the East. I was shocked at how solid they really are, a very well rounded team.

They're a perfect team for the current era of basketball. They have two incredibly dynamic wings that can both slide up or down a position, two strong POA defenders, and a bunch of solid bigs that they can rotate.

Yep. 2 best teams in the Finals.

We shouldn't see anymore 8-40 from 3 like we got from some teams that refused to change their approach (even though they were dealing with injuries and just plain poor play).

Karl Juhnke -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (6/2/2022 10:46:33 PM)

Man, in the 3rd quarter I thought the rout was on and the Celtics were left for dead. That was a stunning comeback.

Bill Jandro -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (6/9/2022 7:00:32 AM)

If the Celtics can win G4 at home they'll be in great shape to win it. But I think I'd bet the farm on the dubs evening up the series.

Looking a lot like this one will go 7 games.

Mark Anderson -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (6/10/2022 10:13:39 PM)

How many total half court possessions are there in an NBA game?

Karl Juhnke -> RE: NBA Talk 2020 (6/13/2022 10:15:12 PM)

Watching a bit of the game tonight and the physical nature of it. And of course all I think about is, if Towns was out there he’d be losing his mind.
