The last 10 Super Bowl winners first pick in the previous draft. Is tanking viable?

Chiefs 2019 - #56
Patriots 2018 - #23
Eagles 2017 - #14
Patriots 2016 - #60
Broncos 2015 - #23
Patriots 2014 - #29
Seahawks 2013 - #62
Ravens 2012 - #35
Giants 2011 - #19
Colts 2010 - #31

The Vikings might as well best the lowly Lion's.

This could be the most meaningless stat of all the meaningless stats you post.

Most teams don't go straight from tanking to the Super Bowl. We aren't likely to either, win or lose, but a loss gives us a chance to pick ahead of some other teams, and that could make a difference down the road, if not immediately next season. Hopefully a loss leads to a new regime, but that's a long shot given the recent extensions.

Other than both Mannings, all those teams QBs were picked later. So tanking really didn't set them up for success.

I'm really thinking Lance will be there when we pick. Will Speilman put aside his love for Cousins and set the Vikings up with QBOTF? Maybe since it would be a home state hero who would be praised by pretty much everyone.

It would be a Packer's way of drafting.

Totally agree. It doesn't even make sense.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/2/2021 12:15:11 PM)

When a poster imports tweets daily with stats (often cherry picked) and comments w/o any comments by the poster himself/herself, it is a way to try to make or belabor their point while attempting to create plausible deniability.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/2/2021 12:25:13 PM)

Draft position is no guarantee of impact players or return on value.

It starts with management, scouting, and a vetting process.

Talent in college does not translate well into the NFL, at all times.

How many teams would like to go back and draft Jefferson, Brady, Moss, etc..?

Hindsight is cheap and easy.

Foresight and luck are rare and far more valuable.

Which is ironic, given how hard, yet how bad, a team can try to get needed talent in the draft

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/2/2021 12:26:17 PM)

Captain obvious, takes a bow...

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/3/2021 2:17:52 PM)

I'm ok if they win today. Armchair scouting shows 16 prospects (if they all declare) that would be fine at #15 depending on who is available. Or trading down is ok.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/3/2021 3:20:25 PM)

Well. I only hope next season doesn’t include shut down of OtA, TC and Preseason..

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/3/2021 3:35:44 PM)

Editing since multiple mistakes and excluding 'what-if' scenarios if we had lost.

Started the day 13th. The 'win' puts us in jeopardy of picking 14th, but if SF wins we regain the 13th spot.

Chargers stay ahead of us even if they win and end at 7-9. LV stays behind us even if they lose and end at 7-9.

So 13th or 14th... root for a SF win.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/3/2021 4:22:54 PM)

It looks like the Vikings select 14th in the first round. I'm not sure that they are number 14 in each round. Maybe someone here can say.

http://www.tankathon.com/nfl

Edit: Also, if the Niners come from behind vs the Seahawks, perhaps the Vikings move up one spot. Not sure again, but right now they trail Seattle.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/3/2021 5:20:23 PM)

For context:

#13 = #26 and #45-51 depending on a couple of common charts
#14 = #26 and #50-55 " "

With a trade down might be able to get Leatherwood for the OL as well as DL in the 2nd.

Without a doubt Cousins is grossly over paid. But there were several other moves that have not helped either.

-Asking Rudy to take a pay cut. Instead Rudy walks away with a multi year ext. Nice neg tactics...This after investing a 2nd rder to replace him. The only concession is that it freed up some money now but it still has to be paid.

-Re-signing Barr to like 14ml per. Again freed up money this year but it has to be paid.

-Ext Cousins so we could free up 10ml now but all but crippling our cap the next two seasons.

-Also moved some money around on kendricks contract to free up money now but has to be paid later.

-Reiff was the only move that panned out. But could have been disasterous on the field had he left.

Basically Spielman has been kicking the can down the road the last couple off seasons in an effort to win now when clearly the team needed to be purged and rebuilt. In the end it's the Wilf Bros ultimately responsible for this salary cap mess. Spielman is pulling the strings but he is simply in job preservation mode and will continue to make more crippling moves that are going to set this franchise back for the next regime. Wilf's had an out but blew it and are now married to Spielman's desperate ways unless their willing to eat Spiel's and Zim's extensions.

The Rudolph and Barr contracts are worth more than they deserve, but the Cousins contract is just obscene. Every team has a Rudolph and Barr contract on the books. Cousins is making double what he deserves. It's inexcusable.

Your gift for exaggeration lives on. Cousins is overpaid. Overpaid by $16.5 million? No. Cousins is currently the 8th highest paid QB in the NFL. He also has the 8th highest QB rating in the NFL. He isn't even top 10 in guaranteed money or total contract.

For contrast, Ben Rothlesburger is the 4th highest salary and has the 22nd highest rating. Goff is #5 and # 26 respectively. Cousins is overpaid at a position that is chronically overpaid as a whole.

Great post Sweens.

I'm so glad we didn't lose to the freaking Lions to close the season. I don't care if it cost us 20 positions of draft order.

kgdabom -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/4/2021 10:06:33 AM)

I didn't pay a lot of attention to the Vikings this year. I know that Jefferson worked out spectacularly well. Can somebody sum up the good the bad and the ugly from the 2020 draft?

Brad H -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/4/2021 10:19:18 AM)

If Doug Pederson doesn't like Jalen Hurts, the Vikings should make a play for him.

I think he doesn't like the Giants.

TJSweens -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/4/2021 11:51:16 AM)

2020 Draft

First five picks, there is a lot to be happy about. Jury is very much out on Cleveland, but Jefferson is awesome, Gladney and Dantzler look like long term solutions and Wonum shows a lot potential. Too bad we keep our other picks in that range. Of the 8 picks we made in rounds 5-7 only Harrison Hand looks like he could pan out.

Any chance Spielman starts to realize the diminishing returns and looks to trade up for earlier picks? I didn't think so either.

Wow, Pederson's decision really affects you. Did Washington winning somehow mess up who your favorite team Tampa Bay plays?

What Pederson did is not in the spirit of competition. Pete Rose did less. The league and its fans should be outraged.

You actually post about "spirit of competition" when talking about an NFC East game this year?

[&:][&:][&:]

The needs of the team come first. I've provided numerous possibilities for his decisions in the last half of the last game of the season. Add to it that maybe he needed to teach Hurts a lesson that he isn't going to have carte blanche on the QB job. Maybe he wanted to stick it to the Giants. Maybe it's a big FU to the league.

Who knows? But a 4-9-1 team can bench ALL of its starters if they want to. For whatever reason(s). They earned a benching.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/4/2021 3:12:12 PM)

You borrowed from that article to make your points. Plagiarizing.

I love the lead in:

The Sunday night game had so much promise for a great ending to what has been a crazy and tumultuous season. The Washington Football Team was visiting the Philadelphia Eagles on the final night of the regular season, in a game with great drama.

OMG! [&:][&:]

If that's not some artificial hoopla, I don't know what is. Then again, you were called out the other day for embellishing.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/4/2021 3:15:08 PM)

Hold your breath fans, it's 4-10-1 vs. 6-9 for all the marbles!

WOW

bohumm -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (1/4/2021 4:20:31 PM)

Philly BS is real, but win more than six games if you want to make the playoffs. But that QB had to have been known to suck for each of the last four years of practice. You didn't need to see him in an elimination game (for Washington) to know that).

Precisely. He was the third string QB for a reason. Why was Carson Wentz in street clothes if you are claiming you wanted to win the game? It doesn't pass the smell test.
