Any interest in having a 2021 Draft Challenge?

My picks predictions are as follows:

1 reach that sucks..

2 a pick acquired by trading kendricks and thielen for a low second rounder, used to draft a “ surprise “ Lb or corner... who will suck..

3 some off the wall center to play tackle, so we can justify using a natural tackle, at guard..

4 some player no one has on their draft board above round six, who will become the next overpaid future hall of famer..

5-7 unknown QB, two CB’s and a kicker..

Done and done..

Names and schools are irrelevant..

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/12/2021 1:19:35 PM)

As far as NFL-caliber starter talent goes, we still need DE along with the guards (IMO two). 3WR is a void as well.

Guess S has been 'addressed' with the ex-Cowboy.

I'll take that as a Yes.

What? No trade downs to get half a dozen 7th round picks?

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/12/2021 2:35:23 PM)

Well until trader Rick is kicked to the curb... I suppose having 4 - 7’s and 11-12 picks total.... mostly in rounds 6-7, is a foregone conclusion...

Let's just call it 'NFL caliber roster talent' and see how it goes (its not a given by any means)...

Must Haves
LG*
RG*
DE
2QB
K**

* Or ... draft /sign an OT and keep Cleveland at G
** I know we signed a kicker but he seemed like camp competition, and then didn't resign Bailey ... do we need a kicker?

Needs
3WR
3TE

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/13/2021 7:19:53 AM)

Because of Gladney the Vikings also need another CB. I'm thinking they also need a third tight end, another safety and a backup running back. I don't know if they have enough picks for all of that. Wait. They need help on the defensive line too. Shoot. It's good that they still have money for free agency.

Best pass sets: Alijah Vera-Tucker

“His 91.7 pass-blocking grade on 297 true pass sets over the past two years is far and away tops in the draft class.” 👀👀

He's this year's Bradbury.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/13/2021 10:29:41 AM)

Of the OL that participated in it at the 2020 combine, Ezra Cleveland (4.46) was the only prospect to meet the threshold. This year, here’s the OL who have met it (pro day numbers):

• Samuel Cosmi - 4.39
• Spencer Brown - 4.40
• Rashawn Slater - 4.45
• Jimmy Morrissey - 4.47

(Jordan Reid on Twitter)

He is talking about their times in the 20 yard shuttle.

With that good of a pass blocking grade he might be ok at LT despite the short arms.

Also i think i read he is a good zone blocker.

Reiff had short arms and held up pretty well.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/13/2021 10:45:43 AM)

I see some folks on Twitter asking the question, "what if all these players are gone what should the Vikings do?)" And the players are all of the top offensive linemen plus Paye too. And I'm thinking that if all of those players are gone, then one of the three wide receivers will fall to us at #14. The one most likely would be DeVonta Smith, who is said to be the "best route runner in the draft". I think route runners do well here in Minnesota. I'm thinking of Diggs, Jefferson and Thielen, while Treadwell did not do well. He would not be the first Heisman winner here in Minnesota, but I think he would be too good to pas up. Waddle has more speed than Jefferson, so he's fast! We could use some of that too, but I believe he will be gone.

Yes, because pass setting at G is so similar to LT. Plus he can add to the total number of OL not playing their natural position. Win win!

He has looked natural at both LG and LT.

I've stopped 'looking at tape' (what some in here call looking at highlight videos posted on youtube by family members [or the player himself]). That is so flimsy.

I prefer to read incontrovertible strength and weakness blurbs by anonymous draftniks.

Alijah Vera-Tucker

Pros
Thick and burly
Rips a stiff punch
Can deep freeze rushers
Can eat a bull rush
Longer than people expect for his height (!)

Cons
Needs better pop and drop
Average at clearing debris
Not a forklift

..........

Even though I think 14 is too high, I do like that AVT is a short squatty hairy smelly germ-ridden brute ...

different from the usual Spielman IOL draftee (long-limbed and gangly man-boys requiring years of weight room development to mature into the opposite of what a IOL should look like).

i like your take...if he's going to start immediately, then we need someone physically developed - with a man's strength - lower body....

When a person is watching tape of OLineman on Youtube, you usually get a whole game(offensive snaps) so you can get the good and the bad.

Great post!

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/13/2021 4:59:07 PM)

Draft a damn guard and play him at guard until he becomes an elite durable anchor in the line, or he Dora the explora’s his khali like ass right down the road..

Or Trade 14+ other picks to get a lower #1, and, a pick in round 2?

If I ran this team, my draft would look
OL
OL
QBOTF
OL
DL
K
BPA
UDFA...
UDFA
UDFA
UDFA

Any picks in round seven below your first #7, is trade throw in chum or <= to UDFA

Why Spielman covets quantity of late round pick over quality and character of upper round players is only explained by how SHITTY he is at picking top tier talent in rounds 1-3.

I have said this about draft strategy for at least a decade

Draft good Ol early and often, every year...

Defense is nice, I can name 50 past and present Defensive Players that are Legen....Dary...off the top of my head, anytime, and over a beer...

I could do the same on offense, mostly because I have 53 years of fanatical fan knowledge to fall into...

2009 for Favrey, we had as starters:

Loadholt
Herrera
Sullivan
Hutchison
McKinney
+ Shiancoe
+ Kleinsasser

12 years since that level of OL talent for run/ pass blocking.

Fire Spielman.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/13/2021 8:55:35 PM)

It was better with Steussie, IMO,
And Stringer
But not better than Randal McDaniel.

Or Tinglehof or Birk or Lowdermilk, or Christy... but hey it sux now.. big time.

Liked birk the player, a lot.

His underlying personality, not so much..

Am I being Judgmental or expressing a personal opinion, not necessarily just my own?

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/13/2021 9:17:47 PM)

I think the best way to improve this franchise falls on Spielman’s figurative sword/ guillotine ....

Hot seat:

Mike Zimmer

One and done or else:

Rick Dennison

Dude... your line skills suck.
Why are you an NFL coach?
For offensive line?
