Darrisaw not being put on IR gleams some hope.

I for one do not think Hill can hold up for long as a starting LT.

Draft a hurt OL that is still hurt, draft a QB that can't even be ready for emergency backup roll.

Speilman and Zimmer I hope have their jobs on the line.

Who says the QB can't be ready for an emergency backup role? This move says more about Zim than it does about Mond.

People complain that we didn't take Vera-Tucker, but overlook that he missed the entire preseason with an injury too. Let's see how a healthy Darrisaw does before we write off the pick.

It's all true with the one distinction that Vera-Tucker got hurt post-draft and we took a player that may or may not be damaged goods.

Its very possible our medical staff did an outstanding job prodding and eyeballing Darrisaw's groin area (!), maybe it was just undetectable at the time without actual surgery. However, dropping down from #14 to #23 and taking a player that other OL needy teams seemed to pass on ... like they might have had better intel. Its a conspiracy theory yes but ... it does feel a little dirty, know what I mean?

It sounds like Darrisaw is close to practicing so all this hand-wringing will be moot. We all hope so.

The Mond thing ... totally agree, writing him off now is a total panic move. I thought he looked too rough in preseason to pencil in as a #2 but I'd start him over Mannion. Rough, unpolished but showed some tools and grit to maybe get us over a short period.

Close to practicing probably means about 6 weeks to actually participating if all goes well.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2021 7:41:24 AM)

On Sunday, we learned that that 12 of the 53 players on Minnesota’s active roster still have not received a full dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Star Tribune. The Star Tribune also revealed that five members of this group of 12 consists of Kirk Cousins, Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, Harrison Smith, and Dalvin Tomlinson, who are all expected to be starters for the Vikings this season

With an additional player that isn’t fully vaccinated yet on Minnesota’s practice squad, the Vikings’ current vaccination rate is at 81.2 percent at best, well below the NFL’s current leaguewide vaccination rate of 93 percent.

However, the Star Tribune is also reporting that several Minnesota players are currently “in the process of getting vaccinated.” So their vaccination rate should increase in the near future.

6 weeks for Darrisaw sounds about right.

Mike Zimmer said the Vikings are going to try to work Christian Darrisaw into individual drills at practice on Wednesday. Doesn't sound like there's much of a timetable at this point: "Just going to see how he progresses." He notes that Darrisaw has only practiced 4 times since

Courtney Cronin
@CourtneyRCronin

he's been in Minnesota and isn't "in terrific football shape."

Feels like it'll be tough for a rookie to supplant a veteran at LT considering how little Darrisaw has practiced and the fact that he missed training camp. Zimmer calls the situation/outcome w/ Darrisaw "an unknown"

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/6/2021 1:58:52 PM)

Barr unknown. Darrisaw unknown. Mond vs Mannion unknown.

As far as new starters

Herndon Woods Udoh ... unknown.

Pierce Tomlinson Richardson Peterson Breeland ...somewhat known and with decent expectations.

Hill Cleveland ... hopefully unknown.

The Vikings have secured their future on the right edge of their offensive line.

Minnesota has signed right tackle Brian O'Neill to a five-year, $92.5 million extension, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.

The new deal gives O'Neill a massive pay raise. The tackle is set to make $2.43 million in base salary in 2021, carrying a cap number of just $2.75 million in the final year of his rookie deal, and he'll see that jump to an average of $18.5 million per year when the extension takes effect.

The new annual salary rockets O'Neill up the annual average rankings to No. 2 among right tackles, just behind New Orleans' Ryan Ramczyk ($19.2 million per year). His significant increase in compensation proves in dollars what he means to Minnesota's future up front.

Top Videos

A second-round pick out of Pittsburgh in 2018, O'Neill has proven to be a tackle worth the investment. He's steadily improved with each season, posting a career-best Pro Football Focus grade of 78 in 2020, including a run-blocking grade of 83.7. That was the 10th-best mark among all tackles in the NFL last season, and in an offense that relies on Dalvin Cook in its wide-zone scheme, it's even more valuable.

If O'Neill continues on his current upward trajectory, it won't be long before most view him as a premier right tackle. Minnesota demonstrated with this extension it certainly believes he's headed in that direction.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2021 2:10:39 PM)

The NFL is now allowing individuals with documented antibodies to be considered fully vaccinated after one dose. That’s in addition to allowing individuals with a previously documented covid case to be considered fully vaccinated after one vaccine dose.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/8/2021 2:15:43 PM)

Some Vikings are in the process of being vaccinated. As of 9/5 the Vikings are at 81.2 %. 12 active roster and one PS aren’t vaccinated.

O'Neill is well above avg by any standard.

Top 5 RT? not sure. Worth what we paid him? not sure.

My opinion is too much. He's good no question, but he's the 2nd highest paid RT in the NFL now and I don't think he's even made a pro bowl.

If the salary cap explodes like they are predicting, this might prove to be a win win for Vikings/O'Neill

Per PFF

- 69.3 pass block grade (37th among ALL tackles)

All we hear is bitching and moaning because we don't invest in our offensive line, then we invest in our offensive line and all we hear is bitching and moaning.

O'Neal is literally the only decent olineman Spielman has drafted in ten years at the helm.

Let that sink in.
