Injury is my largest concern with Watson.

Not always playing from behind lessens the chance for injury, so if Minnesota can provide a better 1st half defense, less of a chance for injury for Watson.

And having 2 really awesome WRs with Thielen and Jefferson, along with Cook in the backfield, should help the chances that Watson can build a lead by halftime, so again, he isn't playing from behind.

The Vikes have 2 good OL with O'Neil and Cleveland, they would have draft some more, or be smart with getting medium priced OL. The key might actually be having the right OL coach.

Interesting article VRich, and also interesting that 49 fans don't seem to want Cousins.

One fan made a statement that Minnesota finally has stability at the QB spot, why would they want to give that up. It's great that Cousins has stayed healthy, but we want more than just a healthy QB, we want one with upside, that can be clutch, and having some mobility and pocket presence probably also wouldn't hurt.

Since fans posts influence NFL team management decisions we can kiss the Cousins to SF trade goodbye.

David, I am doing none of those things, but I may influence others to do those very things. Or I encourage someone like you, or someone on this message board to influence another person, and that other person ends up influencing someone to do one of the things you suggested.

So you're a butterfly, spawning other butterflies, vs. just flapping your wings.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/2/2021 9:05:22 AM)

The Vikes have what I think are 2 solid OL, is that already comparable to Houston's?

OC can also make a huge difference, am saddened the Vikes are starting over there.

Looking at Texans highlights, we see plays just where Watson was successful, is it possible that compared to Minnesota, they had more slow developing plays, which led to Watson getting sacked more ? Was it the Texan's defense giving up more 1st half points ?

Or was it the Texan's offense not generating enough 1st half points after they traded Hopkins, they became easier to defend ? How did their 1st half points compare this last season, to the previous 2 seasons ?

Bill, we just need to get on the 49 sites and tell them how Cousins can do just enough at QB to make them a SB contender [;)]

Saw this posted....pretty much agree. Teams were bidding up on Stafford; why not see how much for Cousins. Use a pick on Lance or Fields and sign/trade for Fitz if needed. Doesn't have to be about Watson although that is the best case scenario.

If the Vikings don’t attempt to trade Kirk Cousins, they’re absolutely crazy. SF, CAR, IND, NYJ, MIA, HOU, WAS (lol)??? Clearly there was a bidding war for Matt Stafford and Cousins is — at minimum — his equal.

Agreed. The Rams just mortgaged their future to get Stafford because they're in "win now" mode. If San Fran is "win now" mode, and they think Cousins is the man who can get them to the Superbowl, then they'll pay up. If I'm RS there's no way I give up Cousins for less than a 1st and a 3rd. If RS trades Cousins he HAS to get a QBOTF. The Vikings have no shot at Watson, but with San Fran's 1st round pick they might have a shot at Lance or Fields, quarterbacks with Watson-like skill sets.

Yep got to start somewhere. Sounds like a Hershel Walker Trade.

Except they gave up Hopkins for a lot less.

Sure. But WRs have nowhere near the value of QBs.

But they gave up Hopkins for a lot less than the Vikes gave up for Diggs who at the time of the trades was not generally considered Hopkins equal. That doesn't necessarily translate to how a Watson deal would play out, arguably the WR market had not been set at the time of the Hopkins trade, whereas now the QB market does appear to have been set.

If they picked up San Fran's 1st round pick, they would very much be players for Watson if Rick were willing to pay the price. It's much easier to give up 2 first round picks if you have an extra one.

Are you worried the Vikings will get fleeced in a Cousins trade because they were in the Walker trade?

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/2/2021 10:54:41 AM)

It's a slim chance that Cousins gets traded and an even slimmer chance we ever land Watson. That doesn't mean either of them are impossible though. I remember being jeered at for suggesting Percy Harvin would be traded and then just like that one day he was traded. The same was said about Diggs. I for one choose to keep an open mind and see what plays out.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/2/2021 11:04:24 AM)

My worry about trading for Watson is less what we'd give up and more about Zim and Deshaun being an oil and water combination.

Does an "attack, attack and attack some more" QB mesh with a "get a lead and sit on it" HC?

I get why Watson wants Bieniemy. He wants to play in an offense like KC - and looking at last year's numbers, it seems perfect for him. 33 TDs, 7 INTs. Led the league in yards, yards/attempt and yards/completion.

In an oil and water scenario Zim would be sent packing. Coaches don't have a history of winning out against elite, franchise quarterbacks.

And Bieniemy does have a 5 year history with Spielman and the Wilfs...

Almost a zero chance we trade Cousins. Unsourced rumors have us in a frenzy.

Also, no matter what you think of Cousins, could you imagine this regime getting QB right?

On the other hand, it tracks that we would trade for a lesser QB, rather than identify, draft and develop one. That's not what we do.

Exactly. This is like our QBnon, a less realistic conspiracy theory than QAnon.

Its worse than unsourced rumors ... which may or may not have a minuscule particle of lucked-into-it truth.

This is made up sh*t / click bait, designed for fans of non-SB teams with nothing better to do.

---------------

Before Cousins (Bradford was not a premeditated strategy for improvement), the last time this regime felt the urge to 'go for it' and address our QB situation ... (and why wouldn't they after a 2013 Ponder / Cassel / Freeman season) ... in 2014 they went full-throttle overdrive and anointed back-up Cassel the starter, drafted a LB at #9 and traded back in to the last pick of round 1 for Teddy. (unsourced rumors had Manziel as our target).

This regime has all their eggs in the Cousins basket, as depraved as that sounds.

They are probably strategizing for one more DL and OL (in the 3rd rd of the draft) to 'ensure' we get back in the playoff hunt. Which is as far as their franchise vision extends.

Although a Cousins trade would defy (how old is the earth?) 4.5 billion years of evolutionary theory.

LOL, thought the same. And the resident tin-foil hats/conspiracy theorists have been front and center in it. Say two of 40 usual posters or 5% which probably mirrors the hard core national base. Plus we have a poster who is big on the UFOs and aliens that we have in captivity.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/2/2021 11:40:43 AM)

The vast majority of time when a big trade occurs, there are claims among the national networks that they were the first to report it (after the fact). Rarely does anything happen in accordance with what some website or blogger claimed days in advance.

Not the point...the amount of picks....I was surprised how steep it was for Stafford while getting a decent but expensive young QB back.

Watson did get Houston to the playoffs two years ago w/o much of roster but if you aren't going to loosen the reigns for him....what does it matter?
